National sprinter Mohd Azeem Fahmi, 18, became the country’s new 100m record holder after clocking a blazing 10.09s during yesterday’s Heat 8 of the 100m event at the World Junior Championships held in Cali, Colombia. Mohd Azeem’s time shattered the previous record held by Khairul Hafiz Jantan who won the 2016 Sukma Games men’s 100m event with a time of 10.18s.

The Malaysian speedster, who ran a blistering 10.09s to create a new national record on Monday (Aug 1), finished second in Heat 3 of the semi-finals to advance. Bouwahjgie Nkrumie of Jamaica was second (10.02s) while Benjamin Richardson of South Africa was third (10.12s). Running in lane 8, Azeem completed his century sprint in 10.14s as the race was won by Letsile Tebogo of Botswana who clocked 9.91s to create a new world Under-20 record.
