You know, if my mom was doing something to me, I did try to reflect on the fact that, you know, she was trying to protect me in some way. There is a racist history of Latinx people being portrayed as overly sexualized, and that were all savage, and we all need to be tamed, and how the media portrays us as gangbangers and the hot gardeners and all this and that, but even outside of those things, I think after writing the book, I have thought about it more. And though I feel like I was hard on other people, I think it was really important to me to be generous as well, to be as generous as I could. And in my mind, I was like, I don’t know that, that this isn’t a coming out story. But a lot of that pressure comes from the fact that I’m Latinx and there are all of the preconceived notions around Latinx people being, you know, sex objects, basically. AS: Yeah. I definitely felt there was an interplay at work in your book between the identity you were born into in the Latinx community, and then the identity you found in the queer community. And I remember I had a professor who once told me he was like, I liked that this story isn’t just a coming out story. And I imagine that when he went to gay bars in Orlando, he experienced racism and fatphobia. Meanwhile, a lot of queer people of color, and a lot of trans people were like, Wait, but what about our rights that are getting taken away? And a lot of what is comfortable to people is preserving the status quo, which is racism, homophobia, sexism, and transphobia. And so I guess I had an acute understanding that so much of who we all present ourselves to be is kind of an illusion. I don’t know that I needed to be super-worried that they’re gonna read this and feel some type of way about it.

Edgar Wright, James Gunn, and Kevin Feige Support 'Batgirl ... (IndieWire)

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah received plenty of Hollywood support after their DC film was abruptly scrapped.

Gunn also had a similar experience, as he was briefly fired from directing “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” after the internet dug up some of his decades-old tweets that contained some off-color humor. While Gunn and Wright’s messages to the directors were not shared publicly, the two men certainly know a thing or two about having superhero movies ripped out from under them. “Shoutout directors Edgar Wright and James Gunn, your kind words and experience mean a lot and help us through this difficult period.”

Gunn has seen unprecedented success over his years on comic book movies, delivering critically-acclaimed ensemble pieces within both the Marvel and DC Universes, not unlike how Fallah and El Arbi were set to have projects in both worlds. "Because of the wonderful news about the wedding (congrats!) and the disappointing news about Batgirl. Very proud of you guys for all the amazing work you do and particularly Ms. Marvel of course! The aforementioned Feige, who worked with Fallah and El Arbi on Ms. Marvel, hit up the directing duo to offer his best wishes.

Kevin Feige, James Gunn and Edgar Wright Show Their Support for ... (Collider.com)

In the wake of Batgirl being cancelled, multiple directors and producers from across Hollywood have shown their support for the film's directors.

However, with Zaslav's Batgirl write-downs and his intentions of reshaping the DCEU with a "10-year plan focusing just on DC," that he says is "very similar to the structure that Alan Horne and Bob Iger put together very effectively with Kevin Feige at Disney," it's unlikely the film will escape its shadowy confines. Purportedly, Batgirl does not align with the direction they will be taking the DCEU and HBO Max, which intends to not only distance itself from the SynderVerse, but will be converging with Discovery+ in the coming year. Amid the recent Warner Bros. Discovery calamity, including, but not limited to, the cancellation of the DC Extended Universe's Batgirl, so much remains up in the air for fans and creators.

Kevin Feige, James Gunn and Edgar Wright Reached Out to 'Batgirl ... (Variety)

Kevin Feige sent his condolences after Warner Bros. shelved "Batgirl" from ever being released.

“And as part of that, we’re going to focus on quality. “We’re not going to launch a movie until it’s ready,” Zaslav said during the company’s Q2 earnings call when asked directly about “Batgirl” getting the ax. The studio is taking a write down on “Batgirl” by not releasing it after it was decided the movie was not big enough for a theatrical release and simply too pricey for streaming. Wright has experience getting a comic book tentpole stripped away from him, as he developed “Ant-Man” at Marvel for years before exiting the project before filming due to creative differences. Arbi shared an email that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige sent him and Fallah in the aftermath of the film’s cancellation. Feige was hardly the only A-list name who reached out to the filmmakers.

Some major Hollywood talents are expressing their sympathy for the shelved 'Batgirl'.

“We’re not going to launch a movie to make a quarter, and we’re not going to put a movie out unless we believe in it.” We’ve restructured the business where we are going to focus, where there is going to be a team with a 10-year plan focusing just on DC. Director Adil El Arbi reveals that Kevin Feige, James Gunn, and Edgar Wright have sent their support after "Batgirl" was shelved.

Because of the wonderful news about the wedding (congrats!) and the disappointing news about ‘Batgirl.’ Very proud of you guys for all the amazing work you do and particularly ‘Ms. Marvel,’ of course! How both Supergirl and Batgirl factor into this new era of the DCEU, if at all, isn’t exactly clear. Earlier this week, Warner Bros. Discovery made a drastic decision: axing a nearly completed “Batgirl” movie, shocking many fans and non-fans alike with the news that a $90 million-budgeted superhero pic would never see the light of day.

And while Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (known as the duo Adil & Bilall) have a great many other projects that are incredible and show their talent, it’s still not an easy thing to deal with.
