Earlier today, Dr Mahathir announced the setting up of the Gerakan Tanah Air movement to ensure the rights of the Malays are taken care of. Dr Mahathir also said the movement would not collaborate with the “court cluster”, adding the current four parties in the movement are free from any corruption record. Dr Mahathir, who is also Pejuang chairman, said that the movement would field candidates, specifically in Malay-majority seats in the peninsula.
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 4 — A new Malay-Muslim-centric political coalition called Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) chaired by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was launched here today.
“We don’t want to be a new party. “GTA will convey the message that the fate of the Malays is in their hands. To successfully go against Umno, we must have a political group made up of other Malays; otherwise, it will not succeed.
He says the Gerakan Tanah Air movement is geared towards those who are concerned about the future of the country.
However, Mahathir said this did not mean that the Malays would usurp the rights of the non-Malays. He said the movement would contest 120 seats at the 15th general election, targeting areas in the peninsula which it was confident of winning. Voicing hope that the alliance would receive the support of the people, he said this did not necessarily mean joining up as a member.

Speaking about Gerakan Tanah Air taking part in the polls, Dr Mahathir said: "We will focus on the peninsula first. Dr Mahathir said the four parties in the movement are free from any corruption record. Dr Mahathir, 97, said there are also non-governmental organisations, academicians and individuals in the new "movement".
