I didn’t think that at the time but I think with hindsight it did, it set in that self-belief. A dominant quarter-final and semi-final performance has Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy into the gold medal match. England - whose men have never reached the gold medal match - racked up a massive 14 penalty corners but could not convert in the match. First up, Kaye Scott is through to the gold medal fight after winning her women’s light middleweight boxing semi-final against Alcinda Helena Panguane on points. “I thought, ‘What is that?’. I looked down and there was a big nail in my foot and a plank of wood. But Australia began the day brilliantly with five golds in the early hours and didn’t slow down from there, adding four more overnight to finish the day on 59 golds, ahead of England’s 50. It drew a little bit of blood. “It is one of those that will etch in the history books forever. “I feel like I’m continuing the legacy of really strong Australian race walking and to go back-to-back, winning on the Gold Coast four years ago really changed my life. “I’m so sorry to these boys and everyone at home. I’ve got a little bubba Summer who is seven months old and my partner,” he said. Rohan would not have been able to do a lot of this training, he would have been focusing on getting his body right.

They preserved their six-goal lead at the end of the third quarter at 41-35, and four goals in quick succession at the start of the fourth from Grace Nweke ended any hopes of an England comeback. The world number one-ranked side made a rampant start and took a 13-7 lead, but a rally from Jamaica reduced the deficit to 14-12 at the end of the first quarter.
