While the Predator movies may not have always resonated, the newest installment, Prey, seems to have revitalized the series.

A group of scientists finds a pyramid in the Antarctic that is used as a staging ground for Predators to hunt Aliens. Things don't go as planned and the Aliens break their Queen free in the hopes of escaping their centuries-long cycle. Predator is a classic action film that does everything right. After two disappointing crossovers with the Alien franchise, Predators attempted to bring the series back to its roots. Most of the dialogue is recycled lines from the original films, and a very specific lighting issue makes it difficult to watch. Most of the criticisms lobbied at the film speak about how it's not as good as the first. He gets in the way of a group of people hunting the Predator for its technology but ends up facing off with the extraterrestrial killer. Danny Glover plays a no-nonsense cop who starts to suspect that there's something more going on in this city when gang members are turning up murdered. Predator has struggled to reclaim its box office glory over the years as no sequel or spin-off has ever managed to recapture what made the original truly special.

When one of the French trappers pulls out a small dagger while being strangled against a tree, the Predator deploys the shield, which proves to be sharp enough to cut clean through the man's neck and the tree. One of the new Predator weapons in Prey is a disintegrator gas. As the fight continues from there, the Predator unleashes the shield in an offensive maneuver. As Trachtenberg builds towards the epic Prey ending, audiences see more and more of the Predator in action. The Predator does not use the gas as a weapon in Hulu's Prey movie, even though it would seemingly be quite effective. Audiences first saw the Predator wristblades in 1987 as the alien uses them throughout the movie to kill the teammates of Arnold Schwarzenegger's Dutch. All future movies in the Predator franchise have included the iconic weapons, although some installments and versions of the Predator only have one blade on each arm. Plenty of weapons are used by the Predator in Prey as its mission progresses.

Prey does something similar, but Predators comes with a suite of its own ideas and expands the universe in interesting ways. It's a cool idea and it's well executed. I love the recurring motifs, the way it plays with the relationship between predators and prey. Prey is also a beautifully shot movie, set in a landscape that feels a little different to what's come before. Prey is a very good movie with many great elements. Given the fact it was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, the man behind an incredible nine video game movie adaptations, that makes a lot of sense. Predator featured just the right amount of video game-style silliness. The plot is completely incoherent, the characters are two-dimensional and it completely misunderstands why Predator, as a series and a cultural artefact, matters so much to so many people.
