These are all welcome changes that cut down on the compromises you have to make when choosing between the Z Flip and Samsung's non-folding Galaxy S phones. This feature is new to both the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4, although Samsung said it would evaluate bringing it to older foldables as well. The Z Flip 4's battery size is also getting an increase to 3,700-mAh capacity compared to its predecessor's 3,300-mAh battery. The Z Flip 4's cover screen is also getting a few new additions. Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Flip 4 on Wednesday during its Unpacked event as part of its latest effort to popularize foldable phones. The Z Flip 4 has new software that takes advantage of its foldable design, improved cameras with better low-light photography and a bigger battery.

The Galaxy Flip 4 feels just a little more like a regular, very nice flagship phone that happens to fold in half — not something that made a lot of concessions for its ability to fold. The Flip 4 is available for preorder starting today and will be available on August 26th. The main screen is still 6.7 inches with a 120Hz variable refresh rate, and it’s a claimed 45 percent stronger this time around thanks to changes in the display structure and stronger ultra-thin glass. At 1.9 inches, the cover screen is still just a little guy. The thickness remains the same, though: 17.1mm at the hinge and 15.9mm where the ends of the display meet, so the gap when the phone is folded is the same size. The hinge is a little slimmer, and Samsung straightened out the previously curved edges of the phone, shaving off a couple of millimeters in width and height. It’s the latest generation of Samsung’s smaller foldable, and it comes with some small but meaningful upgrades, like a bigger battery, upgraded camera hardware, and a stronger main display.

Overall, both the Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 are more evolutionary and retain similar features and functions from their predecessors. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 is the most expensive, starting at $1,799.99, while the Z Flip 4 starts at $999.99. As we said last year, while the Z Flip 4 is more affordable than earlier versions, it's still a premium price. Last year, it added support for the S Pen stylus in the Z Fold 3. With the Z Fold 4, it upgraded the processor (also in the Flip 4), added a new onscreen taskbar for PC-like multitasking, and built-in support for new features in Google apps and Microsoft Office, like drag-and-drop. The Flip 4 now has a 3,700mAh battery versus the Flip 3's 3,300mAh. In our Flip 3 review, we said the battery life was one thing holding it back. For the Z Fold 4, you'll get the storage upgrade, up to $1,000 off with an eligible trade-in, $100 Samsung Credit, and a Standing Cover with Pen case. The lifestyle-centric Z Flip 4 now has improved cameras, larger battery, and more customizable options. Prices for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 remain the same as their predecessors. There are areas that could be improved on paper, but the Galaxy Z Flip 4 feels like a mature and evolved smartphone that is capable of competing. Overall, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 takes an established identity, listens to customer feedback, and makes a few small improvements in all the right areas. Given that the battery life on the Z Flip 3 was an area of concern, these improvements should mean the Galaxy Z Flip 4 battery lasts all day. There’s no charger in the box, but there are plenty of great Galaxy Z Flip 4 chargers that you can snap up at a low price. The first thing you’ll notice is that the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is lighter than the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The 512GB storage option is new to the Galaxy Z Flip 4 (with the Flip 3 only offering the other two options), but otherwise, this is the same feature set as last year. This provides a very natural way to take advantage of the hinge’s ability to stay open when half folded and it will likely become one of my favorite ways of using the Galaxy Z Flip 4. There’s also improved image stabilization and tracking to minimize shakiness, which should mean those low-light photos – which were the downside of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 – are vastly improved. That means the same 12MP ultra-wide camera with f/2.2 aperture and 1.12µm pixel size, while the main sensor is also a 12MP wide lens but features a pixel size of 1.8µm, which is 0.4µm larger than the Galaxy Z Flip 3. These include those present on the Galaxy Z Flip 3 as well as the ability to send quick replies to texts, make calls, and access Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings.
