There’s never been a more important time to explain the facts, cherish evidence-based knowledge and to showcase the latest scientific, technological and engineering breakthroughs. With leaf-shaped teeth, it was a an herbivore, chomping on vegetation between 97 million and 94 million years ago. So it’s not every day that we find fossils which break the mould.

Newly Discovered Armored Dinosaur Species Found in Argentina (CNET)

The newly discovered species, Jakapil kaniukura, is thought to be related to thyreophoran species -- armored dinosaurs like the Stegosaurus and the Ankylosaurus ...

The dinosaur is also said to be an herbivore with leaf-shaped teeth similar to those of its Stegosaurus relative. The remains were discovered in the Río Negro province in northern Patagonia by a team of international paleontologists at the Félix de Azara Natural History Foundation in Argentina. Lead paleontologists wrote in the report that these remains represent the "first definitive thyreophoran species from the Argentinian Patagonia" and show "that early thyreophorans had a much broader geographic distribution than previously thought." In the scientific report published last week, the paleontologists said that these remains could represent an entire lineage of armored dinosaur species in the Southern Hemisphere previously unknown to science.

Jakapil kaniukura was likely bipedal — and probably resembled an armored pitbull trotting on its hind legs.

"The neck armor of this dinosaur is unique, and it protected that delicate area from predator attacks," explained one of the study's co-authors, Sebastián Apesteguía. "The bones that are preserved from the arms show us that they were tiny," which is unusual for dinosaurs from the group to which Jakapil kaniukura belonged — known as thyreophorans. They also survived until the Late Cretaceous in South America, which was between 100.5 million and 66 million years ago — right before the famous mass extinction of the dinosaurs. Like its thyreophora relatives the stegosaurus and the ankylosaurus, Jakapil kaniukura is believe to have been a herbivore, meaning that it ate plants instead of meat. The discovery of Jakapil kaniukura is also scientifically significant for a number of reasons. In addition, while most thyreophoran walked on four legs, Jakapil kaniukura "seems to show a bipedal stance," researchers write — meaning that it only walked on two legs, much like humans. Last year, paleontologists in the country found dinosaur bones so big, they believe they may have belonged to the largest land animal of all time.

Jakapil is much older than either Ankylosaurus or Stegosaurus and represents the only armored dinosaur in South America. Most thyreophorans are known from the Northern Hemisphere. The herbivore’s low weight and upright body probably helped Jakapil be very agile, but also vulnerable if caught. These fascinating dinosaurs belonged to the order Thyreophora, meaning “shield bearers”, and used to be some of the most extraordinary creatures to roam the Earth. Now, paleontologists have discovered a much more primitive relative of Ankylosaurus, a small armored Cretaceous dinosaur that lived about 100 million years ago in South America.

Its armored body means it belonged to the thyreophoran dinosaur group which also includes the “the bony backed, spiky tailed Stegosaurus and the tank-like Ankylosaurus.” The bipedal dinosaur was about five feet in length and walked using its rear two legs. Researchers have found the fossils of a previously unknown dinosaur—named the Jakapil kaniukura—in the La Buitrera palaeontological zone in Patagonia’s Río Negro province. The dinosaur existed during the Cretaceous period (between 145.5 and 65.5 million years ago) and would have been well-protected thanks to disc-shaped armor covering its neck, back and tail.

“The neck armor of this dinosaur is unique and it protected that delicate area from predator attacks,” said Sebastián Apesteguía, an author of the study. One of the largest and most striking groups of dinosaurs were the thyreophora, herbivores that all sported thick plates and armor to protect them from predators. But while this group were usually giants and almost exclusively quadrupedal, paleontologists have now found one that bucks the trend.

Small armoured dinosaur from Cretaceous discovered in South ... (News9 Live)

Palaeontologists have have described a new species of small, armoured dinosaur, Jakapil kaniukura, based on fossil remains found in South America.

While the large armoured dinosaurs such as the Ankylosaur and the Stegosaur evolved a quadruped mode of locomotion, that of J. kaniukura was more primitive and ancestral, preserving the bipedal mode of locomotion. The remains include portions of a skull and a jaw as well as fragments of teeth, spine, neck and rib bones. Even though J. kaniukura lived when the dinosaurs were dying out, it had a more primitive form than other armoured dinosaurs. The fossils indicate that J. kaniukura was a plant eating dinosaur with teeth similar to those of the Stegosaurus, with a powerful beak to tear away tough pieces of vegetation. The discovered specimen was that of a sub-adult, with many of the bone fragments being worn away because of erosion. The small dinosaur grew to about 1.5 metres in length, weighed between 4.5 and 7 kilograms, and was a part of a basal thyreophoran lineage that survived in South America till the Late Cretaceous. When the animal lived, the landmass on the planet was split into two supercontinents, Laurasia in the Northern Hemisphere and Gondwana in the Southern Hemisphere. Armoured plated dinosaurs seem to have survived for longer in Gondwana, and had mostly died out in Laurasia by the Late Cretaceous period. Palaeontologists have have described a new species of small, armoured dinosaur, Jakapil kaniukura, based on fossil remains found in South America. The creature lived between 97 and 94 million years ago, and was belonged to a group of armoured dinosaurs known as thyreophora, that includes well known relatives such as Ankylosaurs and Stegosaurs. Most of the fossil specimens of thyreophora have been found in the northern hemisphere, so the discovery indicates that the armoured dinosaurs had a much wider range than previously believed. - The creature was a plant eater like the stegosaurus.

Newly discovered dog-size dino had protective armor, scientists say (The Washington Post)

The plant-eating creature lived nearly 100 million years ago and weighed about as much as a Boston Terrier.

The desert region is uninhabitable for many species, so it tends to have fossils of few animals, Apesteguía said in the statement. The path to reconstructing the dinosaur’s body began in 2012, when Apesteguía toured La Buitrera Paleontological Area — where other dinosaurs have been discovered — and found two small bones that he could not identify. The jakapil’s name comes from the crest on the lower part of the dinosaur’s jaw, the function of which is unknown.

The incredible story of how a new dinosaur species was discovered ... (EL PAÍS in English)

The bones of a four-legged herbivore that inhabited the tropics 175 million years ago were found in a remote area long controlled by FARC guerillas.

According to Raad, the fossilized vegetation found near the vertebra revealed that Perijasaurus lapaz “lived in a riparian [adjacent to a body of water] wooded area with low slopes.” Raad and Rincón both highlighted the scientific importance of the finding – it’s not every day that a new dinosaur species is discovered, especially in Colombia. The region’s high heat and constant rain are difficult conditions for fossil preservation. In 2018, 75 years after the fossil was discovered, paleontologist Jeffrey Wilson obtained a Fulbright grant to study the fossil with Aldo Rincón and the other scientists. Back in 1943, the Tropical Oil Company geologists created a hand-drawn map showing the location and depth at which they found the fossil. He took the sediment-encrusted fossil to the United States and handed it over to the University of California, Berkeley. Twelve years later, a preliminary research study was published with the title “A sauropod dinosaur from Colombia” (Journal of Paleontology, 1955). The study did not identify the species, only that the fossil belonged to a sauropod – a long-necked herbivore – and gave no indication of the fossil’s scientific significance. A geologist with the Tropical Oil Company found a heavy and strange-looking bone that did not seem to belong to any native fauna. This species does not seem to be related to dinosaurs that inhabited the tropics during the Early Jurassic Epoch,” replies Aldo Rincón, a professor at the Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla (northern Colombia) and lead author of the recent study published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology. “The main differences between this dinosaur and others can be seen in the preserved morphology of the vertebra.” The team that studied the dinosaur and authored the article with Rincón includes paleontologist Jeffrey Wilson (University of Michigan, USA); museum curator Martín Ezcurra (Argentine Museum of Natural Sciences); geologist Harold Jiménez (Universidad EAFIT, Medellín, Colombia); and geologist Daniel Raad (Universidad del Norte, Baranquilla, Colombia).
