Probable line-ups: Juventus vs Sassuolo - Football Italia (Football Italia)

Massimiliano Allegri's reinforced Juventus host a talented Sassuolo side in a tough Serie A season opener this evening.

Jeremy Toljan is also in doubt due to physical concerns. Allegri has limited options for Juventus’ season opener, with seven players out due to either suspension or injury. Things are much simpler for Alessio Dionisi, who only has to do without Maxime Lopez and Hamed Junior Traore; the former is suspended and the latter is out with a left foot fifth metatarsal fracture.

Serie A line-ups: Juventus vs. Sassuolo - Football Italia (Football Italia)

Juventus debut Angel Di Maria with Dusan Vlahovic and have Filip Kostic on the bench, while Sassuolo drop Giacomo Raspadori during the on-going transfer.

Sassuolo had a conundrum going into this season opener, whether to play Raspadori when he is in advanced negotiations for a move to Napoli, especially as Juventus have also shown interest in the striker. New buys Gleison Bremer and Angel Di Maria are in the starting XI, with Weston McKennie rushed back from a dislocated shoulder to bolster the midfield. The Bianconeri ended last season empty-handed for the first time in a decade and the pressure is on Max Allegri to deliver silverware, especially after a very active transfer window.

Juventus Player Ratings vs Sassuolo: 8/10 for Vlahovic, Di Maria;... (The Hard Tackle)

Dusan Vlahovic and Angel Di Maria stood out as Juventus began their 2022/23 Serie A campaign with a clinical win over Sassuolo.

The Argentine veteran rolled back the years and announced his arrival to the Serie A in style. The Italian replaced Alex Sandro in the 61st minute and gave a decent amount of himself. The former Fiorentina man will have a huge role in Juventus’s plans this season and could have had a hat-trick had he been more clinical. The summer signing made his Serie A bow for Juventus on the night and appears to be the right fit for the Turin side. The former Sassuolo man helped dictate the pace of the game from the middle of the pitch and was in some ways Juventus’s orchestrator from midfield. He was unsurprisingly taken off at the hour mark as Allegri rang in the changes. He teed up Dusan Vlahovic early in the game but the Serbian striker was unable to take advantage of it. The full-back enjoyed a good night out and was impressive at both ends of the field. Juventus enjoyed their first trophyless season in a decade in 2021/22 and have made a good start in their efforts to improve upon it. Bonucci overtook the legendary Dino Zoff’s appearance tally for Juventus and celebrated it with a clean sheet. The Serbian stepped up to dispatch the spot-kick and give the Bianconeri a two-goal cushion at the break. Vlahovic got into the act soon enough and won a penalty for his side before half-time.

Juventus 3 - Sassuolo 0: Initial reaction and random observations (Black & White & Read All Over)

Well, that season opener was sure as hell a lot better than what we saw from Juve last year.

- Danilo celebrated a clearance that went out for a corner in the second half like Giorgio Chiellini used to do all the time. But with the mid-August heat and it being the first game of the season and match fitness maybe not at peak levels just yet, Allegri got the chance to throw some kids on — and that was cool. - Kostic came on with 30 minutes to go and he fired in five crosses in that small period of time. And, of course, there was the fact that Sassuolo was in control of a good chunk of the first half. Anybody who’s familiar with him knows that he’s got that grinta in him, and he’s going to be a nice addition once he becomes a regular contributor. Dude is so good in the air, and can just body attackers off the ball with what seems like not much effort at all because he’s so strong. - It took Juventus four games to get more than one point last season. So while this is one game and certainly only going to tell a fraction of the 2022-23 season, it’s a good start in the overall scope of it. - Dusan Vlahovic had all of eight first-half touches, yet scored one goal, drew the penalty that led to said goal and could have had a couple of other ones. - Perin finished with seven saves, most of which were routine in the second half. Imagine if he was even just a little bit more involved in things. Out went the 4-4-1-1-ish type of formation Allegri was using.
