So, in facing Titania, she has to face the worst of what she would dream this can be — that, in a lot of ways, is what Titania represents. And weirdly, as much as it would be fun to be in green paint so I could actually feel like a superhero, there's something about getting to imagine it that's just a powerful as an actor. It's this fully created environment and it really does become theatre, like, how much can you commit to this imagination-play? But I think what this story is really about is really accepting all parts of yourself, and not denying any of it. There were certain aspects of it that definitely helped me, like letting your imagination do so much of the work for you. Tatiana Maslany: The reason I felt compelled to audition for this part was that I've never really seen a superhero story that focused so much on what it is to be human, and that to me is really interesting. It feels like theatre, it feels like make-believe in a very pure way. TM: I wore a mo-cap [motion capture] suit — this grey suit that has all these sensors on it. I think her wholeness is what makes her a superhero, and that's inspiring to me. But also, growing up — this is a weird reference, but I was really obsessed with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles when I was a kid! She-Hulk has these two very different bodies — one that no one pays attention to and one that everyone pays attention to and she navigates walking into rooms as both of them. I think that had to be part of what I brought to this character, my dorky obsession with those guys and getting to embody them myself, as an actor.

You get to do cool stuff like that.” I was like, “Oh, cool, I wanna be able to do that sometime.” She’s worked so hard to be a lawyer and she has to constantly prove herself, and then when this thing happens to her, she has to contend with a whole other perception being placed on top of her, with societal expectations for how she should be and who she should be. I remember the feeling that we all had, which was just buzzy, giggly, excited, and just so thrilled that we got to do this. GONZAGA: I really hope that someone, somewhere out there makes She-Hulk dog costumes because I’ve been googling them for myself and for Tatiana’s dog, and I have yet to find them. I was like, “Oh, that’s what 10 years of playing this character and physically embodying him and being so inside of him is like. GONZAGA: And I feel like the audience gets a Nikki experience with that because she’s referring almost to a friend. And I feel like a lot of the characters in this show have that ring of truth that’s very easy to bring. We all laid on the ground and watched it on the big screen with them, and that was really fun. Nikki always gets to be on the inside, so she gets those asides, as Nikki, but the audience also gets to experience that. I can light fires and encourage Jen to become She-Hulk, which is why, if She-Hulk ever saves the world, you can actually thank her good friend, Nikki. I feel like Nikki is pretty similar to me. That was fun to step into.

And something about that, actually — and I’m sure other actors have said this — taps into this thing that you do in a theater rehearsal, where you’re imagining that might be where the bed is, or you’re imagining the fourth wall or whatever. But then as soon as I am She-Hulk and I’m in this costume, that does kind of separate me from people — puts me on platforms so I take up a different space. She’s aware of all the mechanics of it, and engages with that. And there’s something about her awareness that maintains from her Jen form to She-Hulk, where she has this hyper awareness — it is part of her superpower — that also is now part of her connection to the audience. Did you look at that show as a tonal inspiration for what you’re doing? I feel like that set me up very well to step into something so technical and do it with an awareness that it can be actually very liberating. Jennifer obviously notices a difference in how people treat her as She-Hulk in the show. Or, alternatively, you’ve got this stick on your helmet that has like a frozen She-Hulk smiling face, and they’re talking to that. From 2013 to 2017, she embodied over a dozen clones on the sci-fi series “Orphan Black,” and won an Emmy for it in the process. Sometimes you’re walking on a platform, if you’re working with an actor who’s not also a Hulk, so that their eyeline is actually looking up at where your face would be. She talked with Variety about the technical challenges of the show, the scene she could barely get through, and why her biggest inspirations were “Legally Blonde” and “Seinfeld.” It was so funny on every page, and it was super weird.

And it’s not necessarily something that she comes to in the snap moment that it takes for her to become a Hulk. It was total play and total imagination time, in a way, and when do adults get to do that? It’s as meta as you can possibly get, and what’s more meta than discussing the fact that the Hulk in [The Incredible Hulk, 2008] was played by a totally different actor? That’s the reason I took this part. So I got to bring that to this character, She-Hulk, and explore her in a more internal way. As much as her transformation is outwardly visible, her internal stays the same, and so that’s a bit of a difference. In general, when you first left Orphan and you went on to play just one character, was it jarring at first? He’s just so great, and the only thing he ever did was make me feel like whatever I was doing was correct. Do Jen Walters and She-Hulk feel like a walk in the park compared to that previous experience? But at the same time, Orphan Black allowed me such a playground to stretch these muscles of differentiating character and make me feel that there was so much possibility in what any one person can be. I just wanted to beat [Deadpool],” Maslany jokes to The Hollywood Reporter. It’s quite fitting since She-Hulk got the fourth-wall jump on the Merc with a Mouth in the comics, too.

She brings a sense of joy, frustration and vulnerability to the musclebound character that will ensure the show remains watchable, even if it grows slack beneath her as was the case with Orphan Black. It is no doubt jarring, but it doesn't take us out of the show. While it took Bruce 15 years of conflict, negotiation, lullabies and yoga before settling into the current Smart Hulk avatar, Jen and She-Hulk learn to co-exist by the third Hulk-out. Considering Ruffalo’s character didn’t get a sub-franchise of movies like some of the other Avengers in the MCU, the episode offers a little more emotional context into the pain, trauma and loneliness he had to suffer through before Bruce and Hulk reconciled and became one. As is common with first episodes, this one too is burdened with doing a lot of expository heavy-lifting. Not so much advice, but I'd love to just send a snapshot of what life is like now so that I wouldn't be so stressed out. When I was working on that character, it was more physical stuff. I remember going to a restaurant, and the waiter was like, “That's awesome. But sometimes I go back and read at random, and it just sucks me right back into a time in my life and makes me remember things that I would never have remembered otherwise. That felt very exciting and like I was getting to go away to summer camp in a lot of ways. But that conversation is why I also gravitated toward this part, because it prompts questions about why we all feel entitled to comment on women's bodies. I wrote in a diary every day and every night. That was probably where acting came into play for me and why it was such a fun channel for me to access. I co-opted skater culture, and I would carry around a skateboard without actually being able to skate. I was a regular on a TV show that was going to be filming in Winnipeg, Manitoba, which is like another small town in Canada, but I was just starting that part of my career. So I presented very masculine and I really wanted to be seen as such. “As much as she's still contending with the fact that at her core, she's Jen, there's something about the way she's perceived that allows her to embody that side of her differently.”

With all these characters arriving in MCU, it’s only a matter of time before we get to see a standalone movie for MCU’s Incredible Hulk. He dedicates his downtime to annoying the heck out of his cats and dog. Mark Ruffalo started playing MCU’s Incredible Hulk in The Avengers in 2012. While the happenings in the Doctor Strange sequel wiped out that version of the Illuminati, it would be easy for Marvel to harness the infinite multiverse for another Illuminati.
