After an uneven pre-season, the Blues have started their campaign strongly. 1hr 10 mins from kickoff: Some rumours whipping about online that Conor Gallagher could be in line for his first Chelsea start. It's Tuchel's only change from the Spurs game, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek retaining his place. Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner have both left and none of their goals in the campaign so far have come from the starting front three of Raheem Sterling, Kai Havertz and Mason Mount. 1hr from kickoff: There we have it. The England forward would love to open his Chelsea account today. However, they lack a bit of cutting edge at the moment. But Chelsea still need to show more. The England international concedes a foul on the edge of the Chelsea box and is shown a yellow card. The hosts have a second and it's Rodrigo, who glances a header into the far corner from a free-kick. The Blues have been caught offside a couple of times in the second period so far but are having more joy on the ball too. The home side almost get in as they catch Koulibaly and Silva high up the pitch but Chelsea defend well enough to limit Leeds to a corner. Leeds have proved a good opponent for the Blues since returning to the top flight in 2020, winning three of their previous four encounters, the last coming at Elland Road back in May with Chelsea running out comfortable 3-0 winners.

I don't see the connection that we lost to the style of Leeds. "We were able to be the better team. "We scored an own goal and conceded from a set piece," Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel said. [as his ban for last week's confrontation](/football/chelsea-engchelsea/story/4725167/chelsea-boss-thomas-tuchel-banned-tottenham-antonio-conte-fined-for-touchline-row) with Tottenham boss Antonio Conte was suspended. "It was the best performance since I have been here," Marsch said. forward took the ball from the Chelsea goalkeeper's feet and dribbled into an empty net.

Five Things We Learned From Leeds United vs Chelsea (Sports Illustrated)

Thomas Tuchel's men suffered a 3-0 defeat on the road to Jesse Marsch's Leeds and here are some of the key takeaways heading into game week four.

It can be difficult to fully decipher what exactly the 26-year-old's role is for the Blues, as he floats around from position to position, yet it could be argued that he maybe deserves a bit more. The Senegalese captain is an exceptional tackler, but the time and place of when he goes in for one need to be considered much more if he wants to survive players such as Bernardo Silva, Allan Saint-Maximin and Mo Salah. Three shots on target, a few more if you count the offside chances, and supporters were gifted little to nothing up front, with Kai Havertz absolutely nowhere to be seen for the 19 passes he made in 90 minutes. Conor Gallagher in particular looked out of his depth amongst shaky teammates, often dispossessed and left stranded, but as transfer rumours continue to speculate, he perhaps won't be getting many more minutes in blue. Tuchel's wing-backs are amongst the best in the business and it appears their output is not that easy to replicate when one of them is absent. New man Marc Cucurella has shown signs of being an impressive understudy for Ben Chilwell, but he just doesn't bring what the England international is able to seamlessly offer, both defensively and going forward.

Report: Leeds United 3-0 Chelsea (Leeds United)

All the action from Elland Road. Premier League. Leeds United 3 (Aaronson 33', Rodrigo 37', Harrison 39'). Chelsea 0. Leeds: ...

Straight into the action, Klich and Gelhardt combined and look to get in on goal. James had used his pace to break free before crossing into the box and finding Rodrigo, who teed the ball up for Harrison to fire home at close range! Meslier was forced into action with 25 minutes to go, pulling off two much-needed and excellent saves in the space of 30 seconds. Adam Forshaw came on for the hard-working Roca in a straight swap at the heart of the midfield, with 30 minutes remaining. Opportunities were coming on the break for Leeds, with Dan James using his blistering pace to break down the wing. Chances were continuing to be exchanged and Rodrigo was looking to build on his good start tot the season, flashing a shot just wide.

The former Man City man gets in again and possession is worked to Loftus-Cheek via Havertz. At least Jesse Marsch tends to be the shy and retiring type... But Koch stepped up in the nick of time and he was offside. 26th minute: Sterling harassing Koch again and the Leeds defender can only shovel a clearance to Cucurella, whose cross is cleared. The delivery from Harrison is typically superb, the run well-timed to the near post and Rodrigo heads home emphatically. 22nd minute: Good header down from Havertz and Mount has the Leeds defence backpedalling. 56th minute: Harrison surges towards the back post to try and meet James' searching cross from the right but Chelsea re able to clear behind. The Leeds winger picked his pocket and rolled in a finish from the goalline. Halftime: Chelsea pressed continuously during the closing moments of the half but Leeds saw things out to maintain their two-goal advantage at the break. 47th minute: As part of that reshuffle, Gallagher is on the right of midfield. Perhaps this is finally the performance to move Leeds on from the much-loved Marcelo Bielsa era. It would not be the most traditional route to full international honours but by selecting his former club-mate Kalvin Phillips a couple of years ago, Southgate showed he is happy to realise the value of casting his net a little wider.
