Declan John had almost restored Bolton’s lead with a free kick, the Liverpool loanee Conor Bradley was bright and a second gate of over 20,000 in a week was positive sign. Gerrard had named a strong bench and Bailey emerged from it to cut in from the right and angle in the fourth goal. Kieran Lee embarked on a mesmeric solo run, twisting his way past Chambers, and had the presence of mind to pick out Dion Charles, who was left with a tap-in. But Wanderers were enterprising and impressive, Ian Evatt’s commitment to attacking football making for an open game. Yet there was a case that the strike of the night came from Bolton. Attacking full-backs form an integral part of Gerrard’s gameplan and if that has led to defensive problems at times in the Premier League it brought a League Cup goal. Kamara started and the fact Gerrard only made five changes was a sign victory was an imperative. Coutinho has spent more time at Barcelona and Bayern Munich than Bolton in recent years, but he provided a defence-splitting ball. It is half a lifetime ago that Gerrard first won the League Cup as part of Gerard Houllier’s double, a decade since he last won it as Kenny Dalglish’s captain. Got forward at tiimes down the left flank to support attacks and deliver crosses. Teed up Charles for opening goal in great performance from veteran midfielder. Booked in opening stages for foul on Ollie Watkins. A good performance from the skipper. Caught out of position for third goal but generally defensively solid. Made great stop from Ollie Watkins and had looked good inbetween the sticks early on, but should have done better for Douglas Luiz's equaliser.

Ings struck the post after the break after being slipped in by Watkins. Coutinho picked up some good positions in front of Bolton’s back four and brilliantly put Ings in one-on-one prior to the penalty. Douglas retained possession well on his recall to the starting XI but was caught on the ball by Afolayan prior to Charles sweeping home for 1-0. Boubacar Kamara - Lost the ball which led to Charles’ opener but, throughout, kept dishing out fouls and was far too eager to win the ball back. McGinn was put under pressure on countless occasions but dug in to help Villa over the winning line. Tyrone Mings - Enjoyed a good battle up against Kachunga and produced a strong block to deny him after Chambers was caught out having jumped underneath the ball. Calum Chambers - In for this first start of the season and got turned by Lee who teed-up Charles for the opener. Ashley Young - An attacking outlet in the first-half for Villa as he looked to bomb on. Emi Martinez - Had no chance with Charles’ opener but was alert at his front post to stop John’s cross from sneaking in. And it was Bailey who added a gloss to the scoreline with a fine individual goal on 87 minutes, taking his man on one-vs-one before bending home for 4-1. After the restart the pair combined for a glorious chance with Watkins slipping Ings in on goal before the latter’s placed effort hit the outside of the post and rolled away. Just 12 minutes later and, against the run of play, Villa got themselves level in bizarre fashion when Douglas Luiz curled home directly from a corner.

Wanderers' hopes of a Carabao Cup shock were extinguished but not before giving Aston Villa a fright.
That was harsh on Wanderers who had given their all and were grateful to two late saves from Dixon to prevent Villa from adding to a flattering scoreline. It was a luckless way to go behind and the Whites were suddenly left with all to do as Digne quickly added another as he burst into the box to steer a shot inside the near post as Dixon lost his bearings. Villa were able to add more quality from the bench and one of their substitutes, Leon Bailey, delivered a high-class finish to make it 4-1. The striker’s first goal of the season had the place rocking and it was arguably against the run of play that Villa equalised with an unlikely strike eight minutes before half-time as a corner from Douglas Luiz swung straight into the far top corner. Villa countered with Lucas Digne getting forward to fire wide before Ings hit the foot of a post following another rapid counter-attack as the pace refused to relent. And the five-time winners ultimately had enough to get the job done as they built on Douglas Luiz’s freakish equaliser direct from a corner to book their passage through with three goals inside the final half hour.
