MP SPEAKS | Poverty, corruption still major issues after 65 years of ... (Malaysiakini)

When Pakatan Harapan took over power in 2018 we came in with hope, hope that reform will finally happen with the Harapan manifesto setting the tone for the ...

After more than two years of Covid-19, the poor have seen their income squeezed even further by lower/weaker purchasing power, and stagnant wages and to top it all, prices are not coming down despite subsidies. Even more worrying were the four withdrawals from the EPF that resulted in RM145 billion being taken out by members. This amounts to 445,622 people – almost half a million lives in poverty and barely surviving. Bills need to be paid with fair wages. Efforts to bring back self-respect and dignity for the poor and marginalised. Reform of the executive including the police, MACC and Election Commission to bring about a more stringent check and balance system with separate, independent oversight roles. End the normalising of the mismanagement of rakyat’s money as these funds can be put to better use to build a more balanced and resilient social safety net scheme. Despite the government’s effort to save the day, with the passing of the Anti-Hopping Act, we are witnessing a weak and regressive government. Efforts to build resilience and security for the poor. As more money is required to purchase the same basket of goods and services, there is a need to boost the income of the lower wage earners – a minimum wage of RM1,500 needs to be implemented urgently and effectively. The government needs a leadership that has the guts to gather and engage the rakyat to bring about structural changes as well as understand the need for a paradigm shift in consciousness to be more inclusive, transparent, accountable and just. Poverty and absolute poverty continued to haunt us and we now refer to B60s as more fall under the poverty line.

Charting our way forward to 2057 Merdeka centennial celebration (New Straits Times Online)

After today (Aug 31st), we will have 35 years to go before arriving at that historic year.

These included a closer working relationship between the government and people in education, economy and ecology. Between now and 2057, I believe we have much to do. Political continuities in the form of coalition politics and the visioning process have been the main influences in politics for the country.

What 'Merdeka' truly means for every Malaysian (New Straits Times Online)

"MERDEKA" has different values and meanings for every Malay-sian. For the previous generation, which went through the colonial era, "Merdeka" meant freedom ...

Next is reading and writing, two powerful mantras in the knowledge-seeking process. This is necessary in giving greater autonomy to students to lead their own groups and be actively involved in the decision-making process at the university level. One of the ways is to encourage critical dialogues with the students and take real-world case studies as examples. This task rests on the shoulders of educators, that is, teachers, lecturers and parents. Pendeta Za'ba spoke about the importance of making our nation and people smart. It has existed since the 1950s, uttered by a patriot and nationalist figure, Dr Burhanuddin Al-Helmy.

For Merdeka, a gift of compassion — Sharifah Menyalara Hussein (Malay Mail)

A happy Merdeka and Malaysia Day to all of my fellow Malaysians. Every time we went to the hospital for her treatment, she would think of her nurses, and always bring them gifts of cakes and food. A friend of his once explained the Tunku’s equine bond by saying that horses, just like people, respond to kindness, a trait that Tunku had in abundance. For Tunku Abdul Rahman and his daughter, Tunku Khadijah, love for the common man was a thread that bound their lives together. And although she is no longer with us, my love for her will remain forever in my heart. Even her security guard came crying to us, on the day after she passed, wondering where she was — she had left, and didn’t return. That is the only meaning I know, and that will be my guide and inspiration as a leader.” She once wrote: “Every evening, I derive satisfaction from feeding and stroking the horses. She was always there; in every photo, on every holiday, and most of all, in my memories. Her birthday wish was to donate to Tasputra Perkim, a charity set up by her father, the Tunku, for special needs children. My mother once wrote: “Although I did not follow my father’s footsteps as far as politics was concerned, some part of him lives on in me. Once safely inside, her father pats her head affectionately and tells her what a good girl she is.

This form of solidarity would empower us to stand tall to oppose any form of foreign colonialism and imperialism. This, tied in with Hari Merdeka being a celebration of our country’s diversity, had led me to always believe that we as a country would move forward into the future together as a developed and first-world country. From watching videos of the first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, declaring independence to the rakyat gathered at Dataran Merdeka in 1957 to visiting historic landmarks on weekends, it would not be a stretch to say that the idea of Merdeka really inspired me. Growing up, Merdeka always seemed to be a celebration of our country obtaining freedom from the clutches of the colonial powers.
