Freedom for Malaysian creatives to express their artistry and showcase their works in new captivating ways – without an intermediary suppressing their revenue streams. Xanadu also presents a unique platform for brands, such as those previously done with Tiger, and an upcoming collaboration with Sony Pictures to build a series of exciting movie-themed activities on Xanadu. Sounds quite far-fetched, but this is exactly what participants of the MERDEKAVERSE, as the celebration is called, can experience very soon in a “phygital” (a special term denoting the combination of the physical and digital realms) experience that simply has to be experienced to be appreciated. At its core, Xanadu is an alternate social platform where people can be instantly immersed in culture and entertainment. Every experience in the MERDEKAVERSE is unique to each participant. This is what your new freedom is about. As opposed to other virtual events, the MERDEKAVERSE presents a highly engaging, all-encompassing and riveting extravaganza that will break down barriers between Malaysians and the metaverse. The four-week-long MERDEKAVERSE virtual festival celebrating national pride and all things Malaysiana will feature music, games and virtual interactions unlike anything experienced before, marking what could be a historic moment in itself for our beloved country. This is history in the making as Merdeka officially enters the metaverse, bringing participants the MERDEKAVERSE, unlike anything experienced before.

After more than two years of Covid-19, the poor have seen their income squeezed even further by lower/weaker purchasing power, and stagnant wages and to top it all, prices are not coming down despite subsidies. Even more worrying were the four withdrawals from the EPF that resulted in RM145 billion being taken out by members. This amounts to 445,622 people – almost half a million lives in poverty and barely surviving. Bills need to be paid with fair wages. Efforts to bring back self-respect and dignity for the poor and marginalised. Reform of the executive including the police, MACC and Election Commission to bring about a more stringent check and balance system with separate, independent oversight roles. End the normalising of the mismanagement of rakyat’s money as these funds can be put to better use to build a more balanced and resilient social safety net scheme. Despite the government’s effort to save the day, with the passing of the Anti-Hopping Act, we are witnessing a weak and regressive government. Efforts to build resilience and security for the poor. As more money is required to purchase the same basket of goods and services, there is a need to boost the income of the lower wage earners – a minimum wage of RM1,500 needs to be implemented urgently and effectively. The government needs a leadership that has the guts to gather and engage the rakyat to bring about structural changes as well as understand the need for a paradigm shift in consciousness to be more inclusive, transparent, accountable and just. Poverty and absolute poverty continued to haunt us and we now refer to B60s as more fall under the poverty line.

Next is reading and writing, two powerful mantras in the knowledge-seeking process. This is necessary in giving greater autonomy to students to lead their own groups and be actively involved in the decision-making process at the university level. One of the ways is to encourage critical dialogues with the students and take real-world case studies as examples. This task rests on the shoulders of educators, that is, teachers, lecturers and parents. Pendeta Za'ba spoke about the importance of making our nation and people smart. It has existed since the 1950s, uttered by a patriot and nationalist figure, Dr Burhanuddin Al-Helmy.

This form of solidarity would empower us to stand tall to oppose any form of foreign colonialism and imperialism. When there is common humanity, there will be consensus on the fundamental principles of governing the nation.
