I'm gonna die rather than give up," a jubilant Gomis said in a post-fight interview as the fans roared their approval. With the red, white and blue of the French flag projected on the octagon floor between bouts, the six-fight main card got off to a slow start for the energetic home fans as English fighter Nathaniel Wood defeated Frenchman Charles Jourdain by unanimous decision. Two minutes into the third Gane stunned Tuivasa with a kick to the head, and though the teak-tough Aussie initially refused to go down, Gane piled on the pressure.

UFC Paris: Gane vs Tuivasa - Winners and Losers (Bloody Elbow)

He did an excellent job in tying up the hands of his opponent and using a body lock to force Buckley to defend strikes and chokes on the mat. However, he faded in the third stanza and spent a fair amount of time backing up. He went one for three in that department opposite Benoit Saint-Denis, but he did not seem thrilled when he got hit and he was a bit uncomfortable in throwing his own strikes. I would have liked to see Figlak and his team adjust his attacks after the first round, but that did not happen. This was not a bad first UFC fight from the young lightweight Joaquin Buckley: Joaquin Buckley was a game fighter, but the size differential in his fight opposite the taller Nassourdine Imavov really hurt him. That style and his height advantage allowed Quinonez to set up the kill shot, catching Taha with some power of his own, landing an enormous right as Taha got his head out over his feet and opened himself up as a juicy target. She got the opportunity to erase that loss from her mind on Saturday when she accepted a short-notice matchup on the UFC Paris card. Kopylov was 0-2 in the UFC heading into his UFC Paris matchup against Alessio Di Chirico. His goal when he steps in the octagon is to hit and not be hit. He and Gane earned “Fight of the Night” honors in Paris, giving Tuivasa four straight bonus winning performances. Even if it’s not, Tuivasa is a certain type of heavyweight the UFC needs, someone who, to quote Tuivasa himself, is, “down to get down.”

UFC Paris: Tai Tuivasa shrugging off monster kick to the chin from ... (GiveMeSport)

Tai Tuivasa somehow stayed on his feet after monster kick lands perfectly on his chin at UFC Paris from Ciryl Gane…

In the third round, Gane landed a kick to his opponent’s chin which was absolutely ridiculous. Ngannou was quick to congratulate Gane for his victory whilst acknowledging Tai Tuivasa’s efforts, saying: “Great job guys! It’s safe to say UFC Paris fully delivered, in particular the main event. The bout was a display of great sportsmanship, with the Australian joking and laughing with his opponent throughout despite the brutal nature of some of the shots landed. Tai Tuivasa walked on to a Moulin Rouge theme in a nod to the location, with the Parisian crowd loving it. Tai Tuivasa attempted less strikes in total than Gane landed at just 89, critically though, he landed just 29 of those to register a 32.6% success rate which just isn’t going to cut it in the UFC.

Robert Whittaker recognizes Israel Adesanya is the champ, but he believes he is the most dangerous middleweight alive.

I conquered most of them before that second fight, and in that second fight, I conquered the rest of them, and I think you could see that in this fight today.” “I hear there’s rumors of an Australia card, and I would love to fight in my backyard,” Whittaker said. If Pereira is unable to dethrone Adesanya, that means Whittaker is likely still some ways off of a middleweight title shot, and that’s OK with the former champion. UFC Paris: Ciryl Gane vs. Tai Tuivasa - Fights to make (Bloody Elbow)

All the best, most interesting, and unquestionably coolest fights the UFC needs to make following their latest event in Paris, France.

A bit of a low simmering, tit-for-tat bout for Haqparast, but given some of his recent struggles, going out and getting a win had to be the top priority. Saint-Denis nearly had the finish in the first round, but left nothing to chance on the restart with a brutal TKO early in the second. The Dagestani’s suffocating top game should make for a heck of a test. He’s not likely about to get a 3rd Adesanya fight right now, and he’s teased the idea of going to LHW. Tuivasa seems like the step back Tuivasa needs and a chance for Volkov to keep building momentum. My first thought was Borralho, just because I think the combination of grappling chops and size would make for a fascinating test for both men. With his combination of size, power, and durability, it seems like it’ll only be a matter of time before we see the Aussie fighting for gold. But what does that mean in a world where he’s already fought and lost to the champion? However, if he’s willing to stay busy, then there is another man sitting right in the same place, with lots of good wins under his belt and very little chance of competing for UFC gold right now. If he’s not willing to take any other booking, then that might leave the Frenchman waiting for quite a while on the sidelines—all while the UFC tries to coax Ngannou back with promises of other, more notable, PPV challengers. So, what’s there for Gane to do while Ngannou and the UFC try to come to terms? Robert Whittaker showed that he’s still a clear cut above the rest of the pack at 185.

UFC Paris: Ciryl Gane vs. Tai Tuivasa - Unofficial awards (Bloody Elbow)

Get a unique rundown of all the trophies that should have been handed out at UFC Paris with Dayne Fox's Unofficial Awards.

Technically, it’s the only return, as Ziam was the only fighter who has re-signed to the organization for this event after a previous stint. It would be a surprise if he were able to find his way back to the organization. Someway, somehow, Gane found a way back to his feet and [brutalized Tuivasa’s body](https://twitter.com/UFC_Obsessed/status/1566187276857901056?s=20&t=4BUBdhyw5zLuhWsV1Ry2SA) to the point he doubled over several times. But the sequence in the middle of the second round, when Gane and Tuivasa came ‘thisclose’ to putting away one another, stole it all away. It isn’t like it was a murderer’s row the Italian fell to in that time, either. I’m not convinced of Stoltzfus getting a pink slip given he was willing to take the fight on short notice—I appreciate the UFC not punishing fighters for stepping up in those situations—but it’s not like luck wasn’t on his side when the UFC kept him around after opening his UFC career with three consecutive losses. Once upon a time, Roman Kopylov was considered to be one of the brighter prospects the middleweight division had seen in a while—back when he was signed to the UFC in 2019. He made good on that opportunity, but the 19 second loss to Magomedov makes his employment just as precarious as it was before his win over Dwight Grant. Instead, not only does it have him sliding down the middleweight ladder, his reputation as a someone unwilling to back down doesn’t appear as sterling as it was heading into the event. For now, the Unofficial Awards are here to focus on the quick hits less noticeable narratives that emerged, in hopes of giving a more all-around look at the event. Throw in that former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker looked as sharp as ever in disposing of Marvin Vettori and it was a hell of a consequential night. Gane operated with his usual efficiency for most of the fight, but Tuivasa found holes in Gane’s tight defense to drop the Frenchman and put him on the ropes.

5 biggest takeaways from UFC Fight Night 209: Was Marvin Vettori ... (MMA Junkie)

Thoughts and analysis of the biggest storylines coming out of UFC Fight Night 209, which took place Saturday in Paris.

But at least now he knows he’s capable, and that’s another ace up his sleeve to strike fear into his fellow heavyweights. I think he gets a bad wrap for it but can understand why his antics and approach to interviews can rub people the wrong way. Due to his precision striking style, there had been a segment of fans who labeled Gane (11-1 MMA, 7-1 UFC) as either a point fighter or just too risk-averse. That humility is important at this stage, and if Vettori fails to express that, we may have seen the best from him. He’s now 2-0 in the weight class after outworking Charles Jourdain to [a unanimous decision](https://mmajunkie.usatoday.com/2022/09/ufc-fight-night-209-results-charles-jourdain-vs-nathaniel-wood-paris), and it seems obvious this is a good fit for him. The difference, however, is that Whittaker is vocal about his relentless desire to get a third fight, whereas Holloway played as if he was indifferent about it. Because while he’s great, we need to look at his first two fights with the champ and acknowledge Adesanya is greater. Whether you think he was delusional or just outright wrong, Vettori convinced himself he won or at least had an upper hand in his two encounters with Adesanya. Vettori was a compelling test given his own moments of success when fighting Adesanya, but he didn’t have much to offer, and Whittaker shined once more. It’s a tricky position to be in for Whittaker. He should probably slow his roll on that front, but I don’t hate the confidence. Although the quality of competition wasn’t the highest, it was exactly what Magomedov needed for a memorable debut.
