Why the UEFA Youth League is so beneficial for LFC's U19s (Liverpool FC)

Barry Lewtas is hoping his U19s can embrace the challenge of playing in the UEFA Youth League once again and showcase their undoubted ability, ...

We are excited to be in it, we also get to go to all six first-team group games home and away and that is a real plus for the boys as well. We went 1-0 up and I was then disappointed with the little spell early in the second half when we conceded two, but I thought character-wise we played our way back into the game and deservedly got back into it. Two good teams, two clear styles in the way we wanted to play the game and intensity high from both teams. The players are as well, we did well in the competition last season reaching the quarter-finals, and we want to do well in it again. Away games are tough, you have to get used to playing on different surfaces you are not used to and some teams use artificial surfaces. We are really pleased with the opportunity this has given us and we have some great games to look forward to against Napoli, Ajax and Rangers.

Matt Doherty is also classed as an overseas player, even though he's spent his entire career in England - bar a 17-game loan spell at Hibernian in 2012. He added: "It's a mistake we made that at this level of football we cannot repeat again. Fortunately for the Italian, that is no longer a concern. UEFA rules force Champions League teams to have at least eight locally trained players in their 25-man squad. Yet UEFA have changed their stance due to Swansea playing in the English Football League (EFL). As such, Davies is now classed as an "association-trained" player.

It should be noted that this ONLY applies to Davies, and not to Matt Doherty, who came up through various academies in Ireland, or Eric Dier, who is English but spent his formative years at Sporting Lisbon’s academy. That’s especially annoying this season as Tottenham have been right up against the line with their foreign player allotment, and were in danger of not being allowed to register a full squad of 25 players.
