LONDON: King Charles III greeted crowds singing “God Save the King” outside Buckingham Palace on Friday before making his inaugural address to Britain...

The final public farewell at Westminster Abbey in London will be a public holiday in the form of a Day of National Mourning. From the Scottish capital, her coffin is due to be flown to London on Tuesday for a lying in state accessible to the public. “During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the queen was so widely held,“ Charles said in a statement on Thursday. The smiling 73-year-old -- the oldest monarch to ascend to the throne -- shook hands and accepted flowers from well-wishers after returning to London from Scotland at the start of his reign.

Scotland declared him King Charles II, but the English Parliament abolished the monarchy and declared England a republic. The second Charles was just 18 and in exile when his father was killed. In the end, the king was captured, tried for treason and beheaded. — and cut to the chase: By 1642, Parliament had booted the king from London, and England descended into civil war. He spoke as monarch for the first time Friday, echoing his mother’s pledge to serve the United Kingdom and “uphold the constitutional principles at the heart of our nation.” When the first Queen Elizabeth died in 1603, Charles’s dad succeeded her, becoming King James I. What's in a title? Why King Charles III isn't George VII (Mashable)

For a moment, as a new King acceded to the throne, confusion reigned — over his name. The royal formerly known as Prince Charles was first described simply ...

His being a Catholic freaked everyone out, and when one of Charles II's illegitimate kids (the Duke of Monmouth) launched a rebellion, James had Monmouth and 250 rebels executed, and thousands more sent to penal colonies in the West Indies. Exiled again to France, then Italy, Charles passed his days in a blur of drink and a miserable marriage to a German princess. Charles Edward Stuart or the young pretender or Bonnie Prince Charlie, as he wasn't really known in his lifetime, traveled to Scotland and set up court on behalf of his dad, the old pretender James III. What happened next: James, Duke of York (the one who took New Amsterdam from the Dutch and renamed it New York) took over from his brother as James II. He was also suspected of Catholic sympathies at a time when the country was very Protestant, bustling with Puritans and Quakers and a bunch of new sects and utopian cults. After Charles was captured and killed, many Cavaliers fled to America, often to the Carolinas, so named for their King. And to take them at their word, the new King simply decided to become Charles III in Balmoral Castle on the afternoon of Sept. Here he is, saddled with the same name as the headless King, the King of many mistresses, and the King who wasn't one. England's last encounter with a King Philip was when Philip II of Spain technically co-ruled the country with his wife, Queen "Bloody" Mary, in the 16th century. A short hop first, to 2005, and a little Christmastime flurry of stories in the UK press claiming He was able to bring any one of those names to the throne with him.

Britain's King Charles makes first address to the nation (The Star Online)

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's King Charles gave a televised address to the nation on Friday, his first since the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth.

I know she will bring to the demands of her new role the steadfast devotion to duty on which I have come to rely so much. "And to my darling Mama, as you begin your last great journey to join my dear late Papa, I want simply to say this: thank you. "I pay tribute to my Mother’s memory and I honour her life of service. "As The Queen herself did with such unswerving devotion, I too now solemnly pledge myself, throughout the remaining time God grants me, to uphold the Constitutional principles at the heart of our nation. In the course of the last seventy years we have seen our society become one of many cultures and many faiths. Her dedication and devotion as Sovereign never waivered, through times of change and progress, through times of joy and celebration, and through times of sadness and loss.
