14+ reasons enterprises should upgrade to iOS 16 (Computerworld)

When it comes to iOS, 16 it's not terribly surprising most reports focus is on consumer-friendly features. But there are lots of good reasons for enterprise ...

- iPhone 12 Given that Apple has made iPhone 14 eSIM-only in the US, another improvement that was slightly ignored on announcement now makes a lot of sense. It’s not perfect and the cost of exploiting it is such that most smaller enterprises will probably ignore it, but the move does add another layer of protection to help distinguish genuine corporate emails from spam. Apple has reached a deal with CloudFlare that lets users purchase email domains from within iCloud Settings. This is going to save a good deal of time for many businesses who have had to use a wired connection on the Mac to support some devices until now. Apple has also created two new APIs for MDM service providers, which enable IT admins to either enforce or prevent use of Rapid Security Response across their Apple device fleets. [working to reduce the need for authorization](https://www.computerworld.com/article/3663430/wwdc-apple-cloudflare-fastly-plot-the-end-of-captcha.html). [Declarative Device Management](https://www.computerworld.com/article/3663052/wwdc22-apple-brings-declarative-device-management-to-the-mac.html) makes managed devices more proactive and intelligent, which means MDM systems gather early warning signs in the event unauthorized changes are made to the device. This also makes for highly efficient device deployments alongside SSO. Apple introduced integration with Google Workspace earlier this year following previous support for Microsoft sync. [OAuth 2.0](https://oauth.net/2/), which supports additional identity provision systems from third-party services. But there are plenty of reasons for enterprise users to upgrade — including these [productivity-enhancing tweaks](https://www.computerworld.com/article/3670751/10-lesser-known-ios-16-features-to-make-work-easier.html).

How to Use 'Safety Check' and 'Lockdown Mode' in iOS 16 (WIRED)

Apple's two new security features give people in vulnerable situations ways to quarantine themselves from acute risks.

For a user who has concerns and wants to rein in the access other people may have to their location information and other data, Safety Check offers a tool called Manage Sharing & Access. This tool details the people and apps that have access to different information, like who is connected through Find My Friends or which apps can use a device's microphone. “I think it's commendable that Apple is taking measures to address security threats that are only ever likely to impact a tiny fraction of its user base.” Given this premise, the creation of purpose-built protective tools like Safety Check and Lockdown Mode is not just a logical progression but a necessary one. “People criticize Apple for not opening up iOS enough, and those folks would say this is just a token effort to silence critics. The feature comprehensively restricts any nonessential iOS features so there are as few potential points of entry to a device as possible.

It was also the case that every device that ran iOS 14 was capable of upgrading to iOS 15, where iOS 16 drops support for a couple generations of older hardware. The release of iOS 15.7 serves two purposes: to keep older iPhones that can't run iOS 16 updated with security patches (thiszx includes the iPhone 6S and iPhone 7 series along with the original iPhone SE, among others) and to let people who don't want to upgrade to iOS 16 a way to get security updates. By January 2022, the company stopped updating iOS 14 and pushed all iOS users to update to version 15.2.1. The shift from iOS 15 to iOS 16 will likely be similar, but a couple of new wrinkles could complicate things. The latter is probably the most significant of the three, with a total overhaul of the iPhone lock screen, new iMessage editing and message deletion capabilities, and passkeys that attempt to replace passwords (Our full iOS 16 review is forthcoming.)

As was the case with iPhone 13 Pro models released last year, 4K ProRes video recording on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max still requires a model with at least 256GB of storage, according to Apple's tech specs for the devices. Garmin has reacted to Apple's new rugged Apple Watch Ultra, saying in a tweet following the iPhone 14 and Apple Watch event that it measures battery life in "months" and "not hours," promoting its latest Enduro 2 watch for athletes. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus have seen "bad" pre-order results, indicating that Apple's positioning of the two new standard models may have failed, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Apple Brompton Road is the first Apple Store in the UK with a dedicated Apple Pickup area for customers to pick up their products ordered on Apple's online store. While there are several features that users can begin to use right after they update to iOS 16, there are several new features that apps will need to add support for first before users can begin to enjoy them. Apple is releasing iOS 16 to the general public today, offering users new ways to customize their Lock Screen, the ability to edit and unsend messages, and more. There are now three ways to charge the new AirPods Pro case, including with a Lightning cable, MagSafe wireless charging, and now with an Apple Watch magnetic charging puck. Smartphone manufacturers supplying the EU will be required to provide spare parts for at least five years from the date of a device's introduction and ensure longer battery life, according to new draft proposals published by the European Commission. Apple appears to have delayed its new iCloud Shared Photo Library feature for iOS 16, which is scheduled to be officially released on Monday, September 12.

While features like Lock Screen Customization and editing/unsending iMessages will undoubtedly be the “viral” features of iOS 16, there are a ton of other changes that improve the iPhone experience this year. The update also includes a number of other improvements and changes. The new Home app is designed to make it easier to navigate, organize, view, and control all your accessories. Similarly, you can now undo and redo multiple edits in your photos. Dictation in iOS 16 allows you to easily switch between voice and touch. Passwords are one of the weakest links in digital security today and Apple is adopting the new passkey standard in its effort to move on. As first announced by Apple way back in May, there are a host of new Accessibility features in iOS 16. iOS 16 also includes some notable updates to Apple’s voice-powered Siri and Dictation features. Apple has also redesigned the notifications system in iOS 16, particularly on the Lock Screen. You can choose to install iOS 16 immediately or have it installed overnight while your iPhone is charging. You can then update to iOS 16 with just a few taps. We’re also pouring one out for the iPod touch, as the company is dropping support for the last model that debuted back in 2019. Also, this feature is not available on the iPhone XR, 11, 12 mini and 13 mini, despite these devices having the same notch. In iOS 16, you’ll now be able to undo sent messages, WhatsApp-style, although the person on the other side will be notified when you do. With iOS 16, Apple is rolling out support for passkeys, touted as a more convenient and secure replacement for passwords. Because there’s no password or one-time password (OTP) for you to enter, you can never be phished by a person or website disguised as a legitimate business. It’s been five years, but the company has finally figured out a solution, and that’s to integrate the digits right in the battery icon. It uses the sensors in your device to calculate your steps and distance, in addition to third-party workouts, to estimate calories burnt. Apple ditched the battery percentage display with the move to notched iPhones, as screen real estate was at a premium – until now, you’ve had to open the Control Centre to see the percentage. These can be tied to specific Focus modes, Apple’s way of letting you choose which apps can send notifications (and now set boundaries within apps) depending on what you’re doing. But no longer – iOS 16 adds the Fitness app to your phone, even if you don’t own an Apple Watch. Better yet, for the first time on an iPhone, you can change the font and colours to suit your mood. Among them are far-reaching updates to the visuals, message and mail sending, AI-driven image and text detection and security and privacy.

Apple iOS 16 Release: Should You Upgrade? (Forbes)

Apple iOS 16 has a lot of bugs... iPhone and iPad owners beware.

The most important is for [CVE-2022-32917](https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2022-32917), a vulnerability in the iOS Kernel, which has the potential to allow hackers to execute malicious code on your iPhone and iPad. KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13 ― By now, you'll have probably received iOS 16 if you're an iPhone user. Apple began seeding out its latest mobile operating system ...

We’re also pouring one out for the iPod touch, as the company is dropping support for the last model that debuted back in 2019. Also, this feature is not available on the iPhone XR, 11, 12 mini and 13 mini, despite these devices having the same notch. Passkeys also make web servers less of a target for attacks, as they only hold the public keys; the private key never leaves your device. Because there’s no password or one-time password (OTP) for you to enter, you can never be phished by a person or website disguised as a legitimate business. With iOS 16, Apple is rolling out support for passkeys, touted as a more convenient and secure replacement for passwords. It uses the sensors in your device to calculate your steps and distance, in addition to third-party workouts, to estimate calories burnt. -You can finally see battery percentage at a glance- Apple ditched the battery percentage display with the move to notched iPhones, as screen real estate was at a premium ― until now, you’ve had to open the Control Centre to see the percentage. But no longer ― iOS 16 adds the Fitness app to your phone, even if you don’t own an Apple Watch. These can be tied to specific Focus modes, Apple’s way of letting you choose which apps can send notifications (and now set boundaries within apps) depending on what you’re doing. Better yet, for the first time on an iPhone, you can change the font and colours to suit your mood. Previously, the only way to cut these images out was to either trace the outline with your finger or use the Pen tool in Photoshop. Among them are far-reaching updates to the visuals, message and mail sending, AI-driven image and text detection and security and privacy.

If you take multiple medications, you can choose the shape and color of what you take to make it easier to recognize. Then, you'll get a notification based on the time you take your medication, and you can log and track when you've taken them. In iOS 16, you can now track your medications directly on your iPhone (and your Apple Watch). Now, you can also choose to display a specific Lock Screen and Home Screen on your iPhone, as well as a Watch face based on the Focus you set. You can also choose which notifications come through, and set it up to hide your work email and appointments within different apps. One of the best features of iOS 16 is that you can now customize your Lock Screen. I love this because it gives you the information without the anxiety. I recommend everyone set up at least three Focus Filters, one for work, one for not-work, and one for when you really need to focus. New in iOS 16 is the ability to pair a Home Screen with your Lock Screen. Another feature Apple has added is Focus Filters, which expands on the ability to set a Focus and control notifications. The latter hides all notifications, and instead gives you a count at the bottom of the Lock Screen letting you know how many notifications you have. With that in mind, after you've installed the free update to iOS 16, here are the five things you should do immediately in order to get the most out of your device:
