The 2022 Emmys handed out awards to Succession, Squid Game, Abbott Elementary, The White Lotus, Ted Lasso, Lizzo's Here's To The Big Grrrls and others.
Jean Smart won for Hacks for lead actress in a comedy series for the second year in a row. It's more an observation of public reaction than of the show itself, but standards seem to have changed for when a show has won "too much." Even a second or third win can seem rote by now, so bring on the new contenders, and we'll be glad to see them. Zendaya, who won the award for outstanding lead actress in a drama series for Euphoria two years ago, won again. Even the great Jean Smart, beloved by so many over such a tremendous career and absolutely marvelous on Hacks, might not have been the first choice of many people. The Emmys are starting to have an enviable problem: Even when people disagree with the outcome of a contest, it might be less that a show is undeserving and more that there's simply something else that deserves a shot in a stacked category. Lee Jung-jae won lead actor in a drama series for Squid Game, the first Asian man to ever be so honored. Amanda Seyfried took lead actress for The Dropout and Michael Keaton won for lead actor in Dopesick. Plus, Ted Lasso actors Jason Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein won again in the lead and supporting categories. Perhaps the nicest surprise was Lizzo's Watch Out For The Big Grrrls, which broke RuPaul's Drag Race streak of four wins in the reality competition category. But there were also great speeches and encouraging wins, and we're here to look at five takeaways from the ceremony as a whole. At the same time winners fought for spare seconds, dull montages that were little more than "here are some TV shows" were allowed to linger, as were scripted bits that seemed less satisfying than the cut-off speeches, even when those sketches were performed by able comedians like host Kenan Thompson and the very funny Bowen Yang.
Even the Emmys seem to know there's too much TV. It was in the very text of the ceremony, with the president of the Television Academy telling viewers he ...

Jennifer Coolidge, who won best supporting actress honours for the show, delighted the audience by shimmying to the orchestra music that was cutting off her acceptance speech. “It means something,” Keaton said of the award for playing a caring doctor ensnared with his patients by addiction. “When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was me in the media. I’m not like a sore winner, but I’m going to go home because I can’t top this right now,” an overcome Carmichael told the audience. Lee Jung-jae of Squid Game, who played the show's moral centre, became the first Asian to win the Emmy for best drama series actor. Amanda Seyfried earned the limited-series lead actress trophy for The Dropout, in which she played ill-fated Silicon Valley whiz kid Elizabeth Holmes. ABC's Abbott Elementary, also nominated for best comedy, is a rare bright spot for network broadcasting in the age of streaming and cable dominance. Once the music stopped, Thompson provided a mic drop moment – announcing Oprah Winfrey as the first presenter. She then encouraged anyone doubting their dream “I am here to tell you this is what believing looks like”. “Big week for successions, new king in the UK, this for us. “I’m not saying we’re more legitimate in our position than he is. I carry them with me, and I carry them with” Rue, her character, Zendaya said.

Ahead, find our picks for the best of the best fashion during the 2022 Emmy Awards, including Zendaya, Christina Ricci, and Ayo Edebiri.
Call me a sucker for a good cape, but The Bear star and comedian Ayo Edebiri’s playful pastel pink look was one of the few mini dresses I appreciated this awards season. The bunches of fabric look almost like gnarled tree roots, with a single branch stretching up and onto the actress’s left shoulder. But consider it duly struck here: This Giambattista Valli look hit all the right notes, especially with a piled-high bun and matching rosy makeup. The Squid Game star’s look works so well due to its smart styling decisions: a bob with side-swept bangs and a pair of strappy kitten heels. Trends abounded—black and white remained a major theme on the red carpet—but others paved their way with vibrant metallics, sequins, and tulle. But 2022’s celebration brought attendees back to the 7,100-seat Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, and a bigger evening meant better designs.

Undeniably the most sublime of all was [Ralph’s acceptance speech](https://www.vulture.com/2022/09/emmys-2022-sheryl-lee-ralph-sings-acceptance-speech.html), when she launched into “Endangered Species,” using every molecule of oxygen in her lungs to celebrate her first Emmy win after years of working on the stage and screen. The rare time Zedd played something perfectly evocative of the past year in TV — Kate Bush’s [“Running Up That Hill”](https://www.vulture.com/tags/running-up-that-hill/) — it came during a moment that had absolutely nothing to do with Stranger Things. It was emotional, inspirational, the sort of spontaneous expression that makes you appreciate what it’s like to watch a talent be overtaken by their gift on live television. In other words, the Emmys felt different and the same, filled with familiar characters as well as shout-outs to shows that some people didn’t even know existed. And while a lot of the major winners were predictable, this year’s awards also reflected the wide spectrum of places to find good television. There was a sense that the voters, as well as the producers, had decided to try some things. [Elaborately dressed](https://www.vulture.com/2022/09/emmys-red-carpet-2022-photos.html) actors and creators accepted trophies, some of them well deserved (Sheryl Lee Ralph!), some of them less so (a directing award for a Ted Lasso episode instead of that episode of Barry with the motorcycle chase?). These served as reminders that, as much as television is about great storytelling and allowing audiences to feel seen, it’s also being made in an environment where every network and streaming conglomerate is more desperate than ever for money and eyeballs. [A lot of those trophies](https://www.vulture.com/2022/09/emmys-2022-winners-full-list.html) went to shows that have won before — Ted Lasso, Succession, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver (which nabbed Outstanding Variety Talk Series for the seventh consecutive year), and Saturday Night Live (named Outstanding Variety Sketch Series for the sixth year in a row). After a largely virtual ceremony in 2020 and one held half-indoors and half-outdoors because of a rise in COVID-19 cases in 2021, this was the first “normal” Emmy Awards in three years. And it was normal in a lot of ways. Yeah, [the Emmys don’t make sense sometimes](https://www.vulture.com/2022/07/emmy-award-nominations-limited-series-limitations.html).

Succession, Ted Lasso and The White Lotus picked up major awards. Here's the complete list of 74th Emmy Award winners.
Zendaya is also primed to make history again: In 2020, the actor and singer became the youngest person ever to win a Best Actress Emmy at 24. As for Stranger Things, it stands much more of a chance in the Creative Arts categories, including special effects. Last year, The Crown swept the seven major categories, including winning best drama. All that being said, seven other shows are in the running, including the HBO Max standout Hacks and Hulu's buzzy series Only Murders in the Building. With 20 nods, the series about an optimistic American coach who heads an English soccer team is the most nominated of the best comedy contenders. Some very funny series are competing for best comedy at the 74th Emmy Awards. As is Toheeb Jimoh, a nominee in the same category who plays the lovable Sam Obisanya. She could take home the award again this year. The feel-good Apple TV Plus show nabbed 20 nominations this time around, including best comedy. Squid Game already made history as the first non-English nominee to be nominated for best drama. An in memoriam segment just played, set to a live performance of the song Pieces by John Legend. HBO's lauded series grabbed three Emmys in total (four including Creative Arts Emmys), despite leading the pack with 25 nominations.
No, the award show wasn't sequined themed, though the red carpet may have convinced you otherwise.
Coming in the form of overskirts starting at the waist, split up on separate shoulder blades, or tied around the neck to turn the wearer into a sort of fashionable Wonder Woman off-duty, they all had the effect of adding strength and glamour to the looks on which they were attached. Edebiri in Giambattista Valli. They can turn a simple silhouette into an eye catching ensemble, and they come to life under the stage lights and flashing bulbs of the paparazzi. And where there are sequins, there will be tulle—the two go together like princess-themed birthday parties and those Barbie cakes where the base doubles as her skirt. Lizzo in Giambattista Valli. Cuoco in Dolce & Gabbana. They sparkle and shine and can be manipulated in ways to mimic patterns like plaid, florals, or patchwork. To be fair, each star added a bit of his own personality to the suits. Legend in Gucci. Garfield in Zegna.
