Rather than coming across as something organic, this sequence, which even includes a hattip to an iconic gangster drama, only feels like pandering to the fans. While Muthu's descent (or ascent, if you choose to see it that way) in this way is a somewhat familiar arc, Gautham makes these scenes engaging by drip feeding us with the workings of the gang. The problem is that the secondary characters are not fleshed out in detail. We get a counterpoint to Muthu in the form of Sreedharan (Neeraj Madhav), a Malayali, who lands up in Bombay at the same time as the former and becomes part of Kutty's gang. But it is in giving us what happens next that the film slips. In fact, even Muthu gets a similar chance, which he is initially shown to be taking. We know that Muthu, whose mother has sent him in the hope of preventing him from commiting murder (which, she believes, is his destiny) will make use of the gun that comes into his hand in the earlier scenes, but the manner in which the filmmaker reaches this point feels fresh. His is a life of thorns, quite literally, so when he is faced with the question of survival, he is ready to do whatever it takes - including getting mixed up with the underworld - to provide a better life for his mother Lakshmi (Radikaa Sarathkumar) and sister Gomathi. And so, this youngster from Karuvakkulam goes to Bombay to work in a parotta shop that is a front for gangster Karji. Soon enough, Muthu is caught up in the rivalry between Karji and Kutty Krishnan Nair (Siddique). With Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu, Gautham Vasudev Menon attempts a gangster saga that takes us deep into the underworld, where those driven by desperation are used as pawns by their bosses in their game of one upmanship. Will he be able to find a way out of the violence and bloodshed?

Great work in terms of background score, just the fact that âMarakkuma Nenjamâ is used in multiple places, there are a variety of impressive tunes that improves the scenes well. However, the minimum expectation for a moviegoer is for the film to hold the attention span, in that way, itâs for sure a winner. Radhika Sarathkumar just has a minimal screen-time and her character is kind of empty with lack of emotional quotient. The screenplay is decent for almost the entire movie. Carries a very simple and a familiar storyline which is the rise of a common man. It is written by Jeyamohan and directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon.

On the whole, Vendhu Thanindhadhu Kaadu works out as a finely made gangster drama that could have been better if it had more detailing in the second half about the gangster world, instead of the usual snake and ladder games that we have already seen in this space. Debutant Siddhi Idnani has lip-sync problems, but she has a nice presence in the film that works in favour of it. Gautham Menon has explored a path less travelled when it comes to the lives of gangsters, without glorifying it too much in a cinematic fashion, and opting for the realistic angle where a common man is forced into the world without his fullest acceptance.

In the climax, the two meet again and itâs a profound moment. Siddhi Idnani made a confident debut and looks perfect for the role of a Mumbai girl. His transformation scene and the restraint in his performance made the film engaging. Thatâs a stretch that could have elevated the film to a different level. While the first half of VTK establishes the story, the second half was a letdown. While watching the film, thereâs a constant thought that runs in your mind whether VTK is a Gautham Menon film or a Jeyamohan film.
Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu movie review: Gautham Menon's gangster film starring Simbu is realistic and entertaining.
As much as the film follows a predictable story arc, itâs the drama and the build-up to the transformation of Simbuâs character that really keeps one invested in the story. As Muthu slowly starts getting acquainted with his co-workers and gets accustomed to the world he currently lives in, he learns of the direct ties of his co-workers and boss with the local underworld. Most popular for his breezy romantic stories and the successful cop universe of films, Gautham treads a path less travelled to narrate a story about the rise of a gangster but this is a story thatâs devoid of any heroism.
Here is what the audiences have to say about Silambarasan TR's Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu, which released today in theatres.
The film was set to release in Telugu as well today but got postponed. Many movie buffs thronged theaters in masses to watch the Tamil film and is gathering a good response. The movie's music is composed by AR Rahman and it has already garnered enough appreciation

The film was approaching a good end point, and it went past the point and overstayed it's welcome a bit. Music blends well the film's mood and the songs work well enough. It's refreshing to see the shots not rushing to the next, and they linger a little bit here and there. Simbu is a seasoned actor and its not a surprise that he has delivered an almost flawless performance. The writing is smooth and grounded to the extent possible. The duo has created magic once again and pulls off a splendid performance.

Even if one is ready to overlook such tonal inconsistencies, the end of Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu is appallingly disjointed. To be precise, itâs the âGVM-Simbuâ zone, which is incongruous with the realistic and grounded tone of the rest of the film. Unfortunately, all the great things about Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu lose their charm as the film inches toward the end. When Muthu decides to embark on his journey to Mumbai, his mom says, âThikathavangalukku saami thunai irukum (to the directionless person, God will be of support).
This is unarguably Gauthamâs best work in recent times and apart from his realistic treatment, it's the action sequences that really stand out in the film. The film allows Simbu to shed his star image and be seen as a young boy drawn into the underworld. Whatâs really refreshing about Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu is that it allows both Gautham and Silambarasan to step out of their comfort zones and the result is rewarding.
Simbu is as invisible as Gautham Menon in 'Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu' and this is a welcome departure for them. Yet, something feels incomplete.
Not exactly that but we at least get to hear the woman say, âThis is wrongâ and not fall for his charms. Which is why I am not exactly sure what to make of the last 10 minutes that teases for a second installment. But my favourite shot is when Muthu goes to a textile shop where he meets Pallavi (Siddhi Idnani, in a badly-acted and bad-written romance) for the first time. The filmmaker has also taken a few criticisms of his previous films â with regard to normalising stalking â for the better. This is Simbuâs best acting in ages for the simple reason that we, thankfully, donât see Simbu in the film. Aatrin payanam.â The choice that Muthu has made is âaatrin payanamâ. We get this terrific line from Muthuâs friend Saravanan (Appukutty): âThey are like big machines and we are just like screws on them, not knowing anything about the machine.â Come to think of it, the âmachine analogyâ gets fully-realised in the interval block when Muthu is forced to take a pistol to defend. At least that is how VTK opens, with Muthu (Silambarasan) being the ember in a dying fire who gets thrown out of it, as if to imply that he is a survivor. And the next 40-odd minutes is dedicated to the everydayness of Muthuâs life; the people he meets, the stories he listens to. Therefore, there is no urgency to rush over the story, no urgency for immediate pay-offs. And Gautham Menon anyway isnât interested in telling the story of a gangster; he seems content with the journey itself. He seems interested in capturing the life of Muthu in real time.
Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu is one of the masterpieces he has made till date, made by Gautham Menon Vasudev.
Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu is one of the masterpieces he has made till date. It is proved that he is one of the most bankable actors in the Tamil film industry. He doesnât take risks with any other genres and is a pro when it comes to making films in both these genres. Gautham Menon has explored the unseen side of mafia, the lives and danger involved in it and how people are exploited. That everything and anything even means if he has to cross paths with the underworld don and mafia. Heâs got to deal with a lot of things and to survive he has to take up anything and everything that comes his way.
VTK is as much the coming-of-age story of a helpless Muthu (Silambarasan) from Naduvakurichi as it is about an outsider entering and then making it in ...
Without the usual flourishes and choreography, it is as though these lovers are simply speaking to each other in poetry, only for it to âsoundâ like a song that is playing to the viewer. STR gets us to feel the body-ache Muthu feels when we see him limping from place to place in his village. Jeyamohanâs writing is deftly complemented by Gautham Menonâs filmmaking style, especially when the outsider gaze contributes to a feeling of isolation and discomfort in a punishing terrain early on and then in a strange new city. Their paths keep converging and in the beginning, we sense that it is Sreedharan who got the raw end of the deal. In the arid thorn bushes that Muthu calls home, a job is the safest escape route. But the fusion of these two narrative threads is so harmonious that thereâs no dissonance between the internal journey of a man destined to a life of crime and the external journey that traverses landscapes, morality, language, and time.
Conceived as a two-part film, Gautham Vasudev Menon's film has all the familiar material that you expect from a gangster film but also a few departures and ...
The formulaic twist of using the wife/girlfriend as bait is quite disappointing (how it unfolds reminded me of Kaakha Kaakha), and I wish Siddhi had more to do in the film than play the love interest. Just how far Gautham has moved away from his previous filmography is evident in where the hero and heroine (Siddhi Idnani, playing Paavai) meet â in a small clothes shop where a shy Muthu needs to buy underwear. Itâs a risk because the audience may complain that they didnât understand a line here or there, but it makes the film sound a lot more authentic. Muthuâs back is covered with thorns as he jumps through the flames and over the fence to save his life â itâs a metaphor for whatâs to come. When his mother (Radikaa looks miscast) makes him remove his shirt to make a point about their suffering to his uncle, you can see the loss of dignity in his face â and he conveys it without needing to break into tears. Heâs shown to be fearless in his village, but itâs more the fight of a cornered animal than the flamboyance of a hero.

And yet, we are expected to fill up a lot of such meaning and detail in our head, with the film not quite showing great desire in wading into them. And much like in that series where the wand is said to choose the owner, here too, someone says that the gun picks its master. The high point that the first half of VTK moves towards too, is somewhat similar. How has it affected him, and how has he affected it? I also enjoyed that Madhushreeâs âMallipooâ is sung not from the perspective of the dozens of dancing men, but the lonely woman we donât see in the video call. The allegory, of course, is of peopleâlike Muthuâwhose lives hurt and hurt without respite. And when Paavai eventually wears wedding clothes, thatâs when you know sheâs in real trouble in the GVM universe. Sophistication is a luxury for the impoverished Muthu (Simbu maintains a rather distinct, lopsided walk throughout the film). Someone else says that the gun controls the man and not the other way round. This scorched setting of Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu Part 1: The Kindling, while the title flashes, serves as a prelude for what is to follow during the remainder of the film as Muthu negotiates with the life-equivalent of fires and thorns. [played by a thoroughly invested Simbu](https://www.cinemaexpress.com/tamil/interviews/2022/sep/14/silambarasan-tr-gvm-brings-out-the-real-actor-in-me-34668.html)âis unusual too in the GVM world. The man with the muscles, with whom Muthu gets off on the wrong foot, turns out to be a simpleton who yearns to reunite with his wife and child. The songs, which are about half a dozen, are great. And for people who are at the bottom of the chain, the perks are not going to be too much. Before Muthu steps into the underbelly of the underworld, you get little touches in which heâs given short tours of the trade. Muthuâs apprehensiveness rises to the surface in bits and pieces. Itâs a scene that directly speaks about his hardship because the accident occurs while heâs in the middle of his work.
Silmabarasan-Gautham Menon film, with predominantly positive word-of-mouth reviews, has opened well at the box office.

And yet, we are expected to fill up a lot of such meaning and detail in our head, with the film not quite showing great desire in wading into them. Muthu and friends are supposed to be the nuts and bolts of a bigger machine, and perhaps part 2 will expand further into showing us the workings of the said machine? And this, I found to be, VTKâs biggest weakness: this reluctance to sink deep into the mind and motivation of those who populate this world. By the time the film ended rather strangelyâdesigned to appease Simbuâs fans perhapsâit felt like a different film entirely, one far removed from the scorching promise of its opening portions. I could go on and on, but as it turns out, we donât get many answers in the second half, which gets further distracted about the larger idea of two warring gang-leaders we donât learn too much about anyway. And much like in that series where the wand is said to choose the owner, here too, someone says that the gun picks its master. The allegory, of course, is of peopleâlike Muthuâwhose lives hurt and hurt without respite. For lack of this, Paavai is left alternating between looking coy when Muthu flirts and looking frightened when Muthu fights. Thatâs why my most favourite portion of this film is a snapshot we get of their lonely lives when a drunken manâs video chat segues into a song-and-dance routineâthat feels like straight out of Selvaraghavanâs playbook. The dirty walls, the open latrines, the sounds and sweat⊠Sophistication is a luxury for the impoverished Muthu (Simbu maintains a rather distinct, lopsided walk throughout the film).
