But despite all the problems that we've had, I was really happy with my performance tonight," he added.

Jermall Charlo? Dmitry Bivol? David Benavidez? Canelo Alvarez ... (ESPN)

After his decision victory over Gennadiy Golovkin on Saturday, what's next For Canelo Alvarez?

Against Bivol, he won three rounds at most and the size difference was certainly a factor. Alvarez's lone victory at 175 pounds came against a faded version of Sergey Kovalev in November 2019, a brutal 11th-round KO after Alvarez struggled at times earlier in the fight. "I need to rest my hand, my body, but I will come back stronger. "I need to rest my body," Alvarez said. His next bout could come against Bivol in a rematch for the light heavyweight title he failed to win in May. "I can't hold a glass," Alvarez said in the ring after the fight.

Canelo and GGG End One of Boxing's Fun Rivalries (The New York Times)

For all his successes and talent, Gennadiy Golovkin is destined to be remembered as Saúl Álvarez's foil.

After the fight was delayed while Álvarez served a suspension for testing positive for clenbuterol (he blamed tainted meat he ate in Mexico and said he stopped eating beef), Golovkin called his onetime sparring partner a drug cheat. “He pretends to be a good person and be different, but he’s not.” Whether he fights Bivol next, or somebody else, it seems Álvarez’s future resides in the super middleweight and light heavyweight divisions, one more reason his struggle with Golovkin is finally over. Golovkin won most of the later rounds on the judges’ scorecards, and he has to wonder what would have happened had he begun the fight aggressively. The king of his rivalry with Golovkin certainly, finally. It was perhaps an incongruous statement coming from Álvarez, ever the showman, considering he was wearing a crown as he said it. Fight weekends are always big in Las Vegas, and this time tens of thousands of Mexicans and Mexican Americans descended on The Strip to celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day, which was on Friday, in proximity to its favorite fighter. The judges scored the fight 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113 in favor of Álvarez, scoring that did not do Álvarez’s dominant win justice. Golovkin spent the first two-thirds of the fight weakly probing with his left jab and tagged Álvarez with damaging punches only when he abandoned caution late. Golovkin, 40, is such a fearsome puncher — he has won all of his professional fights against boxers not named Saúl Álvarez, and almost all of them by knockout — that he is regularly avoided. To be remembered as the fighter whose greatest value lay in providing a canvas for Álvarez, known as Canelo, to paint on. Golovkin, then, over the course of 24 rounds, stuck as closely to Álvarez as anybody has.

It was strategic, in the second half I felt not bad, it was a good fight. Meanwhile, Golovkin will likely drop back down and defend his world titles at middleweight, although some fans believe it may be time for him to retire at the age of 40. He is believed to have told the fighter “For the fans, you were and will remain the national champion and the best in the world. He has not explained to whom he was speaking, and was not asked about it in his post-fight press conference. While the judges' scorecards painted a picture of a fight that was just one round away from being another draw, the bout itself was in fact much more one-sided. But fans were shocked to see him smiling on his phone chatting to someone in the midst of the post-fight chaos.

Motivated by closing his Golovkin rivalry, Canelo Alvarez made amends with his longtime foe: “We gave the fans three good fights.”

I feel fresh, still have good power, and the first opponent that comes (at me), I will be looking to return to the ring.” He’s strong and that’s why we are here, and I am glad to have shared the ring with him,” Alvarez said. “I have gone through some difficult things in my life and the only thing you can do (in defeat) is to try and continue to move forward,” Alvarez said. “He’s a real warrior.” “It is very important for me and my legacy.” Surgery is required and up to six-to-12 months of recovery, he revealed, confiding, “I can’t even pull grass.” "We had three fights that will go down in the history of boxing." “Probably a tactical mistake,” Golovkin concluded of the inactivity that plagued him. His reactions were slower than in the fierce 2017 and 2018 battles with Alvarez and he looked winded. We felt content to lay down our rivalry.” And I was able to hit him, too." He twice whiffed on left-handed blows and was relegated to repeated jabs without sufficient follow-ups.

Golovkin, 40, is a magnificent warrior and one of the finest fighters of his generation. Leonard won a decision and the crowd booed during the closing stages. Golovkin was so timid with his offense over the first two thirds of the fight that Canelo racked up the rounds in second gear. Canelo walked away a 12-round unanimous decision winner, the undisputed super middleweight champ and he’ll forever hold a 2-0-1 lead in the trilogy – officially.

Canelo closes trilogy with commanding victory (Chinadaily USA)

LAS VEGAS-After 36 rounds together in the ring over the past five years, Canelo Alvarez finally put a convincing finish on his remarkable trilogy with ...

Alvarez and Golovkin first fought in 2017 and again in 2018, but those 24 rounds did nothing to determine superiority among two evenly matched fighters with nearly unmatched combinations of skill and punching power. The 32-year-old Alvarez was a 5-to-1 favorite shortly before the opening bell, and he fought like it. "I have a great plan," Golovkin said of his future. Golovkin again said he won't retire after this bout, but the longtime middleweight champion took only his second loss-and the first that was decisive. Alvarez wasn't much more accurate, landing only 26 percent of his shots, but the Mexican star landed 85 power punches to Golovkin's 46 and controlled the ring for long stretches. "I have a lot of appointments. Golovkin started far too slowly with no clear strategy to take the initiative away from Alvarez. I'm glad to be involved in that kind of fight." "For me, I'm just glad to share the ring with him. I've gone through difficult times with my defeat, but defeats can show how you can be great, how you can come back and show humility." Golovkin rallied late, but ran out of time. The Associated Press also favored Canelo, 117-111.

Good, bad, worse: Canelo Alvarez, Gennadiy Golovkin served up ... (MMA Junkie)

We take a look at the ups and downs of the trilogy between Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin.

And, of course, he remains a Fighter of the Year candidate. It might be the most lucrative fight in the history of that country in spite of Joshua’s obvious vulnerabilities. The end for the scrappy Philadelphia fighter is near. He might still be able to beat the likes of Kamil Szeremeta and Ryota Murata, his victims in his previous two fights. The official scoring had to be jarring for disappointed fans because they saw what they saw, a fight dominated by Alvarez that should’ve been scored as such. They know the scoring didn’t reflect what happened in the ring. And I saw nothing in Alvarez’s third fight with Golovkin that leads me to believe he could overcome Bivol in a rematch, although I’ll take his word on the injury. I gave Golovkin one of the 12 rounds. The 40-year-old Triple-G looked his age for two thirds of the bout and 39 in the last third. He claimed that the late start was his strategy, perhaps because he no longer has the stamina to fight hard for 12 rounds. Those fights would be more winnable for Alvarez and better received by the fans. Then he will pursue a rematch Dmitry Bivol, assuming the Russian defeats Gilberto Ramirez in November.

When it comes to numbers in boxing, none of the protagonists end up being the loser of the evening. I'm going to take my time.
