There is a new manager in the Premier League as Brighton make their move.

If in the course of a match I understand that it would be correct to field an additional defender or play defensively, I will do that without hesitation.” It seems to me that if too many goals are scored from set play, there are flaws in some other aspects.” “Moreover, my style is actually the style of Shakhtar, the style of football that the team played before me.

Roberto De Zerbi has been appointed as the new Brighton coach, here are the five things you may not know about the Italian tactician.

He was forced to flee the country in February 2022, days after the Russian invasion. Once all his foreign players left the country, he also returned to Italy with his staff. De Zerbi could have replaced Sinisa Mihajlovic at Bologna after the ex-defender was sacked earlier this month. “It’s like the son of a labourer can’t dream of becoming a surgeon, a lawyer or a doctor. It’s as if they had told me as a kid in the schoolyard that the ball’s mine. De Zerbi was one of the few Italian voices against the European Super League that 12 elite European clubs launched in April 2021. It remains to be seen what will happen with their roles following De Zerbi's appointment. At Brighton, the squad is made up of players from across the globe after dipping into the transfer market. When he was appointed Shakhtar's manager in May 2021, he was asked if there would be any communication issues with players. When I speak on the pitch, the Brazilians, as a rule, understand me well. Besides Italian, I speak Spanish. De Zerbi has spent the majority of his managerial career in Italy but over the years he has worked with footballers across the globe and that has helped him become fluent in a number of languages along the way.

After Graham Potter's departure to Chelsea, Brighton have named Roberto De Zerbi as their new coach. Formerly of Sassuolo and Shakhtar Donetsk, ...

Brighton are a squad that deserves European soccer and De Zerbi has the credentials to bring it. Being able to balance possession with defense will be a challenge in replacing Potter's organized setups especially as the center backs will be involved in the build-up for De Zerbi. New to Serie A, it was a struggle for Benvenento to perform under De Zerbi, but his attacking style and eye for transfers began to be noticed leading to his move to Sassuolo in Serie A. It's a similar way to how Brighton operated under Potter so it won't be much of a departure from what the club is used to. That removal was reportedly due to disagreements with the board, an issue that would follow to his next position with Palermo in Serie A. Now, De Zerbi will look to build on the good done by Potter to push the club into European places where he can use the Champions League experience he gained with Shakhtar last season.

Roberto De Zerbi tactics: What Brighton fans can expect from ... (iNews)

The Italian faces the unenviable task of replacing Graham Potter but is regarded as one of Europe's most astute young managers. KHARKOV, UKRAINE - SEPTEMBER ...

Given De Zerbi’s desire for control, the Dutchman could be favoured to the more exciting but less possession-orientated Tariq Lamptey at right-back. Leandro Trossard has tended to play as a wing-back so far this campaign, but can naturally shift into a more advanced position, while Pascal Gross’ form dictates that he will play, perhaps as a No 10. Breaking up the Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo axis may prove tricky to begin with, however, as they have both started the season in fantastic form. De Zerbi is flexible when it comes to using different formations although at Sassuolo and with Shakhtar Donetsk last season, his preference was a 4-2-3-1 with full-backs who held their width and wingers playing on their weaker side. Assuming De Zerbi opts for the latter option, Adam Webster, Brighton’s most accomplished ball-playing defender and club captain Lewis Dunk, may become the first-choice pairing in the middle. Brazilian defender Marlon was another success story and followed De Zerbi to Shakhtar last summer. Mykhaylo Mudryk, the exciting young Ukrainian winger who has been linked with Arsenal and Brentford, also started to make an impression under the Italian prior to the league’s shutdown. In 2019-20, Sassuolo were third in Serie A for both short passes completed – passes between five and 15 yards – and medium passes – passes between 15 and 30 yards. It will be fascinating, therefore, to see if De Zerbi can match or even eclipse the achievements of his predecessor. A criticism of De Zerbi’s tactics is that his teams can be vulnerable to counter-attacks. Under his management, Sassuolo were revered as one of the most eye-catching teams in Serie A. “We made a big point when we moved from Chris [Hughton] to Graham about the style of football we wanted to play.

"It’s like the son of a labourer can’t dream of becoming a surgeon, a lawyer or a doctor. It’s as if they had told me as a kid in the schoolyard that the ball’s mine. That being said, the fundamentals of Potter's and De Zerbi's philosophical beliefs are the same. "I am so angry I spoke about this with the lads for 30 minutes yesterday," he said after the failed plan was announced in April 2021. De Zerbi initially refused to leave the under siege country and has continued to speak out against Vladimir Putin's war. Bloom and co will also have been impressed by how De Zerbi acted during his spell in charge of Shakhtar Donetsk. The 43-year-old may not be a household name in the [Premier League](https://www.mirror.co.uk/all-about/premier-league) - not yet, at least - but he's got a fine reputation in Italy and is still young enough to become a world-renowned manager. "Italian football will always have an element of defender and counter, because that's an aspect that is admired abroad and part of your culture. The emerging manager's side were relegated - finishing 17 points from safety - but he was applauded for sticking to an adventurous style of play. Potter is a hard act to follow, yet De Zerbi might just be the person for the job. They were patient - waiting for an opportunity to pounce - and would press out of possession. De Zerbi's two-year spell in charge of Foggia was a success.

STEPPING into the Premier League for the first time is a daunting task for any coach. But for Roberto De Zerbi, the Italian taking charge at Brighton,

Third tier Foggia followed before the jump to Serie A with Palermo and Benevento. Then I would go back to my room after a few hours." Owner Tony Bloom often likes to take an alternative route with his hires, and De Zerbi, who must work quickly to improve his grasp of English, has certainly had an interesting route to the Premier League. With commercial flights grounded, federations scrapped for plans to evacuate players and finally managed to arrange coaches and a train to Romania for the players. De Zerbi and his international players were rushed into a Kyiv hotel to shelter, with the former Sassuolo boss racing between his room and a bunker downstairs as the shelling came and went. He refused to leave the Ukrainian capital before all his overseas players had been taken care of and found their way across a border.

Very calm in front of goal and one of the few players Albion have left who can be relied upon to hit the target on a consistent basis. De Zerbi will hope he stays for the long term because he is a vital part of this Albion team. He has provided power and skill to the Albion midfield and cushioned the blow of Yves Bissouma's exit.
