But there's going to be a ceremony at Windsor, at the St. So this is a lot of iconography or old British iconography, and this is - they're trying to convey this, not just to the people of the United Kingdom but also the people around the world who are watching. And his casket has actually been kept in a royal vault waiting for this moment, where they will be laid to rest side by side this evening. And literally, thousands of people have been gathering here since last night, camping out, some of them coming at 5 in the morning, to be here when the queen's gun carriage will actually arrive and make that 2-1/2-mile last voyage to Windsor Castle. What happens at the end of this procession? MARTIN: I mean, the roadway itself is lined with members of the royal guard. Frank, this is part of the ceremony, this procession. At the front of the procession is the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. And the coffin's flanked by the king's bodyguards of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen and Arms, the Yeomen of the Guard and the Royal Company of Archers, all of whom were part of the queen's own guards. And I think also in terms of spectacle, this is the top.

It has seen many funerals and burials. The symbolism continued to the end as the Queen’s Company Camp Colour of the Grenadier Guards was laid on the coffin by her son and heir. St George’s Chapel is well used to laughter and tears. In silence the Dean of Windsor placed the crown on the chapel altar, completing a circle from the coronation of 1953 when it was taken from the high altar at Westminster Cathedral and put upon her head. It has been the venue for royal weddings, Prince Harry and Meghan were married there, and it was a place of comfort for the monarch when parts of her beloved castle were burnt down in the 1992 blaze. The Queen’s final resting place was the royal vault of St George’s Chapel within the battlements of Windsor Castle, her home and sanctuary for most of her 70-year reign.

St George's and Windsor featured prominently throughout the Queen's life. Last year the Queen bid farewell to Philip at St George's in a "Covid-secure" funeral. St George's is the resting place of 10 former British monarchs, including Henry VIII and the beheaded Charles I. The chapel was where she marked many a Christmas and Easter, and where she celebrated the weddings of three of her grandchildren: Prince Harry married Meghan Markle there in 2018, as did Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank. It was met at the castle by her last two corgi dogs, Muick and Sandy. "You were fortunate to have had her for 70 years; we all were," Biden said on Sunday after signing a book of condolence. Leaders of loving service are still rarer," he told the 2,000 guests, who included US President Joe Biden and Japan's Emperor Naruhito. A vast television audience watched the funeral worldwide and online, in a sign of the enduring fascination with the woman once described as "the last global monarch". The most senior officer of the royal household, the lord chamberlain, broke his "wand of office" and placed it on the coffin, symbolising the end of her reign. It ended with trumpeters playing "The Last Post", two minutes of silence in memory of the queen and the reworded national anthem, "God Save the King". Chrissy Heerey, a serving member of the Royal Air Force who joined the marathon queue twice, was the last person through the doors early Monday and described the experience as "amazing". "I was in the infantry for 26 years, so the queen was my boss," he said, adding he wanted to "salute one last time as the hearse passed by". The last chants of "God save the queen" were heard as onlookers scattered flowers on the road, and muffled church bells rang in the distance. "The Queen was buried together with the Duke of Edinburgh," a statement said, referring to her husband of 73 years Prince Philip who died last year. In his funeral sermon, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby praised the queen's life of duty and service to the UK and the Commonwealth. To the tune of pipes and drums, the gun carriage -- used at every state funeral since Queen Victoria's in 1901 -- was then drawn by 142 junior enlisted sailors in the Royal Navy to Westminster Abbey.
