James Cameron Admits Avatar: The Way of Water Is Facing a Ton of ... (MovieWeb)

James Cameron, director of Avatar, admits the sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water needs to do well at the box office for the franchise to continue.

It's one thing to make a lot of money, it's another thing to actually make a profit," Cameron admits. James Cameron realizes audiences have changed in the 13 years since the initial film's release, and he hopes people will continue to give the world of pandora a chance. It's hard to say how the upcoming sequel will perform, but audiences, and Cameron, will find out when Avatar: The Way of Water dives into theaters on Dec. Of course, the studio will be looking to make somewhere in the $700 million to $1 billion range at a minimum to recuperate production costs and the marketing spent on the movie. He would continue, calling The Way of Water "a big bet." James Cameron Doesn't Know if Avatar 2 Will Be Successful (Superherohype.com)

Aside from a brief period when it was surpassed by Avengers: Endgame, Avatar has been the highest-grossing movie of all time since 2009.

[Avengers: Endgame](https://superherohype.com/tag/avengers-endgame), [Avatar](https://superherohype.com/tag/avatar) has been the highest-grossing movie of all time since 2009. Cameron also noted that even if The Way of Water came out sooner, its success still wouldn’t have been guaranteed. Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame briefly stole the box office crown from Avatar in 2019. Cameron also admitted that the long gap between trips the films could hurt the sequel’s box office. But just how close will [Avatar: The Way of Water](https://superherohype.com/tag/avatar-the-way-of-water) come to matching the $2.85 billion gross of its predecessor?

The villain, who was killed by two arrows to the chest during the attack on the Tree of Souls, will come back as a Recombinant – a Na’vi Avatar embedded with the memories of human soldiers. While Cameron is optimistic about the film drawing interest, he was concerned that the gap might a bit large in the age of instant gratification. James Cameron States The Obvious: 'Avatar 2' Might Have Taken ... (DMARGE)

James Cameron has admitted that he's worried the Avatar sequel may not be successful because it's been a long time since the first film was released.

However, Cameron amended he’s still not entirely sure that means the Avatar sequel will be massively successful. Indeed, we will find out whether Avatar: The Way of Water smashes box office records in just three months. I made a sequel called Terminator 2, seven years after the first movie. “My personal experience goes like this: I made a sequel called Aliens, seven years after the first movie. But we managed to be able to do that in parallel with the filmmaking process. In the 13 years since, much has only gone worse for the climate and the health of the planet. We’re doing all of our sustainability efforts – I don’t want to say as a side hustle, but in parallel. Taking a lesson from that, we basically architected four sequels so that if Avatar 2 is successful, we can follow it up with a regular cadence – two years, maybe three years at the most between “3” and “4.” It will be in the public consciousness more and more regularly, but only if people embrace Avatar 2. Avatar isn’t going anywhere, it just didn’t follow up with a continuous barrage to keep it in the public eye and the public consciousness, which is what you have to do. It’s a big bet. There was a period of time where you were basically risking your life to go to the movies. I think it’s going to be a very long tail on this thing before we’re back to where we were before. We didn’t play the Marvel game. We’re seeing a resurgence back in cinemas. Cameron’s Avatar industrial complex has been whirling in high gear for some time; production on the upcoming sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, began back in 2017. But a lot has changed since the original’s release, when Netflix was still renting DVDs by mail and Cameron was working for 20th Century Fox.

Avatar 2 Perfectly Flips James Cameron's Best Underwater Movie (Screen Rant)

Avatar: The Way of Water will show the aquatic side of Pandora, while also inverting the premise of James Cameron's sci-fi movie The Abyss.

With an environment of the ocean brought to life by the most state-of-the-art effects around, the Avatar 2 is a literal journey to another world, but one that has the same type of environment of The Abyss with visual effects that are just as seminal. The scope the production of Avatar 2, back-to-back with The Abyss was not one of Cameron's more colossal blockbusters, but its significance to film history cannot be overstated. Following a group of scientists on an underwater in which they discover alien life, The Abyss was one of the most bitterly difficult film productions to date. After years of planning and development on [Avatar 2's advanced underwater filming technology](https://screenrant.com/avatar-2-movie-cgi-underwater-technology-unfinished-good/) before even entering principal photography, Avatar 2 is centering the underwater side of Pandora as its main environmental focus.

[Avatar director, James Cameron](https://screenrant.com/avatar-2-success-james-cameron-question/), claims that audiences will not be able to predict [Avatar: The Way of the Water](https://screenrant.com/tag/avatar-2/)'s story. With both Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang announced as returning to the Avatar franchise, and Lang reprising his role as Quaritch, the film has already surprised audiences before they have even stepped into the theater. Cameron recognizes that every time the audience enters a theater to watch a new film, they expect something different from anything they have seen before. Cameron states that the sequel "is not predictable," and he doubts that anybody can figure out where the narrative will go. Set over a decade after the events of Avatar, the upcoming sequel will center on returning characters ex-Marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his Na'vi partner Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) as they fight for their family's survival.

Even James Cameron Himself Is Worried That No One Cares About ... (BroBible)

James Cameron says he was "concerned" about whether or not people still cared about Avatar prior to the release of the first sequel teaser.

It should also be mentioned that the trailer only has 25 million views on YouTube, which pales in comparison to some MCU trailers or even the trailer for The Batman. That worry, though, ultimately subsided when the first teaser trailer for the film was released and racked up nearly 150 million views in a day. Over the years, I’ve certainly seen the “Avatar actually blows” coalition grow stronger and stronger, especially as the release of the sequel (finally!) nears.
