Indonesia football riot: 129 people killed after stampede at match (The Guardian)

At least 129 football supporters died amid chaos and violence after Arema lost at home to Persebaya Surabaya in East Java, police say.

“We are doing this to respect everything and while waiting for the investigation process from PSSI.” People were carrying injured spectators through the chaos. “We will thoroughly evaluate the organisation of the match and the attendance of supporters. Persebaya players immediately left it but several Arema players still on the field were also attacked. Police said 13 vehicles were damaged, including 10 police cars. Two police officers were among the dead.

Panic at an Indonesian soccer match after police fired tear gas to stop brawls left 129 dead, mostly trampled to death, police said today.

They have also announced that Arema FC could be banned from hosting games for the rest of the season. Some suffocated in the chaos and others were trampled, killing 34 almost instantly. The PSSI investigation team will soon leave for Malang,'' added Yunus.
