“We must continue to maintain sportsmanship, humanity and a sense of brotherhood of the Indonesian nation.” Hundreds of soccer fans, mostly wearing black shirts, held a candlelight vigil on Sunday night at Gelora Bung Karno, Indonesia’s largest sport stadium in the capital, Jakarta, for the victims of the disaster. Brawls were reported outside the stadium during and after the semifinals of the East Java Governor’s Cup, which ended with Persebaya beating Arema 4-2. In April 2001, more than 40 people are crushed to death during a soccer match at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, South Africa. “Officers fired tear gas directly at spectators in the stands, forcing us to run toward the exit,” he said. Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali said the incident “has certainly injured our soccer image.” Indonesia is due to host the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup from May 20 to June 11, with 24 participating teams. People must be warned that tear gas will be used and allowed to disperse. National Police chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo said the death toll had been revised to 125 from 174, after authorities found some of the victims were counted twice. Asked what triggered the panic, he replied: “Tear gas.” In the chaos, 34 died at the stadium, including two officers, and some reports include children among the casualties. At least five police vehicles were toppled and set ablaze outside the stadium. It was among the deadliest disasters ever at a sporting event.

Elias Theodorou, Pioneer of Medical Marijuana in Sports, Dies at 34 (The New York Times)

A Canadian mixed martial artist, he brought cerebral flair to the ring and a dogged determination to his campaign for changing the sport's drug rules.

It was a lesson, and a mixed blessing. After a loss to the American fighter Derek Brunson in 2019, the U.F.C. He called himself “the Mane Event,” ran a Twitter account dedicated to his locks and signed a sponsorship deal with Pert Plus, the shampoo brand. “It’s the coolest thing,” he told The Province, a newspaper in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 2014. He won approval from the British Columbia Athletic Commission in 2020, and a year later from a similar body in Colorado. “I’ve said this before, if I ever saw the guy I fought with, even though he sucker-punched me, I’d buy him dinner,” he told The Ottawa Sun in 2019. He appeared on “The Ultimate Fighter Nations: Canada vs. His parents and his brother survive him. He was strategic and thoughtful.” Elias Theodorou, a cerebral, charismatic mixed martial arts fighter who campaigned to change his sport's drug rules and is widely believed to be the first professional athlete to receive a therapeutic exemption to use marijuana, died on Sept. He fought in both jurisdictions, and was planning to seek further exemptions when he was diagnosed with cancer in January. Theodorou, who suffered from bilateral neuropathy, which caused tingling pain in his hands and arms, didn’t want to be next.

Farewell to my dad, who is the biggest reason I love sports and ... (Bucks County Courier Times)

Back in the late 1960s and early 1970s, I used to tag along with my dad — also Tom Moore — to Bucks-Mont high school football, basketball and baseball games.

As a senior in high school at the time, I would've loved to be a part of the festivities but I respected his decision and why he did it. He was a numbers/stats guy so I became a numbers/stats guy. I attended a variety of concerts with him: from Harry Belafonte to Bob Dylan to The Band to Nanci Griffith and Bruce Springsteen. A June 1995 Dylan show at the Theatre of the Living Arts in Philadelphia might have been the most memorable of them all. He played quarterback so I was a quarterback in midget football for the Pennridge Greenjackets. Some of my fellow 76ers writers like to give me a hard time about how much I enjoy popcorn.
