Namor (and others) strike at a seemingly weakened Wakanda in this dramatic trailer for the next 'Black Panther' film.
Television shows, like NewsRadio and Eight Simple Rules, have worked a shocking death of a significant cast member into the ongoing narrative, but this is uncharted territory for a blockbuster theatrical. What would be a significant upswing for any other franchise (say, Thor: The Dark World earning 13% more domestically and 43% more worldwide than the first Thor) is par for the course. Unlike Furious 7, Star Wars: The Last Jedi or The Dark Knight, Black Panther 2 explicitly acknowledges the death of its onscreen title character (and, by proxy, the actor). As for how it will perform, it’s just a question of whether it earns ‘all the money’ or must settle for ‘the vast majority of the money.’ If it merely plays like Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (-37% domestic but -28% worldwide), it’ll still gross $441 million domestic and (minus China, presumably) $950 million worldwide. That feels like the realistic worst-case-scenario, and quite a few sequels to well-liked predecessors (Star Trek Into Darkness, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, The Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Avengers: Age of Ultron, etc.) gross less domestically but more overseas for relatively over/under global totals compared to the respective first flick. I’m curious to what extent it will play in the whole ‘grimmer, darker sequel that challenges the simplistic morality of its crowdpleasing predecessor’ box since the first Black Panther flirted with that narrative.

Maybe his lieutenant Attuma - a character with a long history as a villain in the comics - is the true baddie of the sequel. Will we find out the kingdom has a backup supply of the herb? Ross to play a key role in this part of the story. Marvel has kept the plot of Wakanda Forever pretty tightly under wraps, but at this point it’s clear the movie is centered around a war between Wakanda and Atlantis (or Talokan, as it’s known in the MCU). Even so, between the source material and some surprisingly spoiler-y LEGO sets, we have a pretty good idea of which character is wearing the Panther costume. The biggest question here is whether Talokan is the aggressor in this conflict, or if Wakanda is somehow responsible for the inciting incident. Just how involved is the West in this deadly conflict between Wakanda and Talokan? [Black Panther:](/movies/black-panther) Wakanda Forever is shaping up to be one of the best in years. What if M’Baku and the Jabari give up on the whole unity thing and make a play for the throne? However T’Challa’s death is actually explained in the film, it’s safe to assume the aftermath will be chaotic for Shuri and her family. Based on the footage revealed so far, it appears Ramonda is now the ruler of Wakanda as its Queen Regent. And it’s clear the film will explore the difficult aftermath as the kingdom tries to regain its footing without its king to light the way.

Namor says in the new trailer, “Only the most broken people can be great leaders,” a message that Ramonda (Angela Bassett) must take to heart, considering she’s just lost her son. As the ruler of Atlantis and the leader of a ferocious army, Namor will present a huge challenge to a nation in mourning over the loss of their king. He’s been a villain, hero, and anti-hero in the comics, one who has both fought with and against T’Challa. There’s also the possibility the wearer of the suit changes, or that there are more than one suit and more than one Black Panther. There are a few striking departures in the new Black Panther super-suit for Wakanda Forever. While her identity remains a mystery, it is clear that this new person in a uniquely stylized Black Panther super-suit is a woman, and now, thanks to the character’s reveal, one of the pressing questions going into a film with a bunch of them will be, “who is she?”

I was at a point when I was like, I'm walking away from this business,” the Oscar-nominated filmmaker said in a recent interview.
Winston Duke breaks down his thoughts on the idea of recasting Chadwick Boseman in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
(laughs) For a comic book world that has multiple dimensions and parallel dimensions and multiple stories and possible futures and possible reimaginations in the past. As Winston Duke alluded to though, in the quotes above, that may not always be the case. He remarked on the "level of trust that [audiences] should all have for a comic book world" alluding to the idea of a different version of T'Challa hitting the screen some time down the line: So I feel, my level of trust is that the medium can support a diversity of interpretations that can actually make us all happy.” "So, I feel, as-is, the decision that’s been made to keep T’Challa, Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa is one that has a lot of nobility in it. Chadwick created this and 'Black Panther' wouldn’t be the same without Chadwick Boseman, who stood for the things that he stood for.

With Avengers: Secret Wars set to potentially blast the multiverse wide open in 2025, a new version of T'Challa may be introduced to audiences in the next few years. While separating T'Challa from Boseman is no easy task for Duke, he also hints that the nature of comic book movies and the existence of the multiverse in the MCU means there might be a way to introduce a new T'Challa while still honoring Boseman's legacy.
