Viral Stop-Motion Videos Capture a Simpler Time in India (Hyperallergic)

There's high demand in the country for the nostalgia-soaked Instagram videos of sister duo Zainab and Sakina Sabunwala.

“There are so many things that we take for granted because we are privileged and in India, it’s so common to see things like small children working on the streets,” Zainab said. The sisters’ work has been in demand by clients ranging from couples commissioning wedding invitations to Disney’s Indian digital platform (Disney+ Hotstar) and the country’s premier cricket league. They were mid-1980s kids and their videos are reminiscent of that time, creating slow magic with attention to small details like making a dish or feeding pigeons. We sit on the floor and eat from one big plate where a meal starts typically with sweets, and then we move to many other dishes, sharing and bonding over food,” Zainab explained. The beauty of their work is found in the smallest details of daily life, like the sound of a man snoring or a cow mooing. Many of the incidents portrayed are personal memories from their childhood, like the depiction of their grandmother on a rocking chair that suddenly becomes empty when she dies. “In our community food is a very important part of life. A life-sized finger (actually Zainab’s) appears in each animation to do some of the action, like plucking a flower, adding an ingredient to a dish, or opening a window. “We grew up listening to Hindi film music on scratchy tape recorders and radios which our parents played all day as they went about their daily chores or on long drives,” said Zainab. Both are trained engineers who spent seven years with their grandparents in Udaipur, Rajasthan, during the Gulf War and did their college education in Bengaluru (also known as Bangalore). “Sakina was always fond of drawing and art and is completely self-taught, and I started working with animation after finishing my engineering degree,” explained Zainab, who happened to be in Udaipur during our phone conversation. Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar’s mellifluous voice plays in the background as a pretty lady clad in a saree sits on her terrace, enjoying her tea with biscuits while sparrows gather on the rails.

Why People Watch YouTube Videos at Faster Playback Speeds (MakeUseOf)

YouTube launched a feature called video playback speeds in 2010 to allow users to control how quickly or slowly they want to watch their preferred content.

Combine that with the huge number of channels and videos across YouTube, and you get people who don't have the time or patience to watch a video at normal speed. However, increasing playback speeds may sink us deeper into the dopamine-driven YouTube rabbit holes that we often fall into. However, people start speeding up videos as the day progresses. Many users don't usually speed up the videos they want in the morning. One of the And for the perfectionists who like custom speeds, 1.1x was the most used speed.

Nuh-uh, Meta, we can do text-to-video AI, too, says Google (The Register)

Given a text prompt, such as "sprouts in the shape of text 'Imagen Video' coming out of a fairytale book. Smooth video," Google's software generates a sequence ...

"We have decided not to release the Imagen Video model or its source code until these concerns are mitigated," they concluded. These models show that computers are good at learning the logical sequence of events to simulate events, such as a water balloon bursting or an ice cream melting. "Video generative models can be used to positively impact society, for example by amplifying and augmenting human creativity. Like Meta's Make-A-Video, the quality of Google's Imagen Video is somewhat fuzzy. Smooth video," Google's software generates a sequence of images to create the short clip as seen below. However, these generative models may also be misused, for example to generate fake, hateful, explicit or harmful content," the researchers said. Imagen Video, for example, is made up of seven types of models. It seems too much of a coincidence. Research and development into generative visual models, however, moves quickly, and it'll only be a matter of time before a new architecture will create fake videos that are crisper, in high-definition, over longer periods of time. Text-to-video systems are more computationally intensive to train and run than text-to-image systems. Pixel art." [public reveal](https://www.theregister.com/2022/10/01/ai_in_brief/) of Make-A-Video last week spurred the Big G to suddenly start shouting about its own competing system, lest it looks like it's fallen behind Mark Zuckerberg's team.

Researchers from both companies have not yet released these models to the public, but it’s only a matter of time before these become accessible. The astronaut leaves the keyboard and walks away. Meta Launched an AI Video Generator, and It's Creepy (Hyperallergic)

The technology isn't available for public use, but Meta (formerly Facebook) released a series of eerie sample clips based on prompts like “cat watching TV” ...

There should be real concern that in a media field already saturated by misinformation, AI-generated videos represent [great potential to reinforce existing shortfalls](https://www.forbes.com/sites/lutzfinger/2022/09/08/deepfakesthe-danger-of-artificial-intelligence-that-we-will-learn-to-manage-better/) in consensus on fact-based truth. [Marina Kassianidou Is Interested in the Leftovers](https://hyperallergic.com/761586/marina-kassianidou-is-interested-in-the-leftovers/) The Imagen team seems to be acutely aware of the potential pitfalls of AI imagery, with an explicit statement about “Limitations and Social Impact” on their research page. Perhaps this seems ridiculous when looking at one of their sample videos of, say, a flying superhero dog, but more contentious with neutral enough examples like a paintbrush moving on canvas or a horse drinking water — and by the time we get to the clip of a spaceship landing, there is a feeling that it might be wise to invest in tinfoil for a coming run on the market to use it to make helmets. When asked about what Make-a-Video could mean for the creation of deepfakes, a Meta representative said, “There are risks that Make-A-Video could potentially be used to create mis/disinformation. “There are several ethical challenges facing text-to-image research broadly,” the statement reads. Google's Imagen takes on Meta's Make-A-Video as text-to-video AI ... (VentureBeat)

Thanks to Google and Meta, the text-to-video trend shows all the signs of getting ready to explode much like text-to-image tools.

[Imagen Video: High definition video generation with diffusion models](https://imagen.research.google/video/paper.pdf)” Google claims Imagen Video is capable of generating videos with high fidelity and has a high-degree of controllability and world knowledge. [generative artificial intelligence](https://venturebeat.com/ai/what-is-generative-artificial-intelligence-ai/) (AI). This was a major reason that Google decided not to release the model or its source code publicly until the concerns are mitigated. The text-to-video trend shows all the signs of getting ready to explode, much like text-to-image did over the past year with [DALL-E](https://venturebeat.com/ai/openai-removes-dall-e-beta-waitlist-tests-api/), [MidJourney](https://venturebeat.com/ai/midjourney-founder-says-the-world-needs-more-imagination/) and Stable Diffusion. The model is currently in a research phase, but its arrival comes just five months after [Imagen](https://imagen.research.google/) showed the rapid development of synthesis-based models. DreamFusion utilizes Imagen to optimize a 3D scene. The training datasets allowed it to generalize a variety of aesthetics. As generative models may also be misused to generate fake, hateful, explicit or harmful content, Google claims that it has taken multiple steps to minimize such concerns. The text-conditioned video diffusion model can generate videos up to a resolution of 1280×768 at 24 frames per second. To create such an architecture, Google claims it transferred findings from the previous work on diffusion-based image generation to the video generation setting. With the entire cascade, Imagen Video generates high-definition 1280×768 videos at 24 frames per second for 128 frames — approximately 126 million pixels. Last week, Meta announced [Make-A-Video](https://venturebeat.com/ai/metas-new-make-a-video-signals-the-next-generative-ai-evolution/), an AI system that allows users to turn text prompts into short, high-quality, one-of-a-kind video clips.

Google Announces Text-to-Video AI Generator that Creates HD Video (PetaPixel)

Coming hot off the heels of Meta's text-to-video generator, Google has announced its own artificially intelligent (AI) movie generator.

Google has voiced its concerns over “problematic data” used to train its AI-image generator programs. The text that those programs generate is barely readable. The system then upscales and “predicts” additional frames, producing a final 128-frame, 24-frames-per-second video at 720p.

Popular social media platform Twitter is rolling out a new feature that will allow users to combine text, photos, videos and GIFs in one tweet.

Previously, you can only attach one single media per tweet, which compared to other social media platforms, is admittedly kinda dull. The teleconferencing firm is transitioning its business in the face of increasing competition from Microsoft and others.

"Ultimately, while we believe in Zoom's platform and long-term vision, this view is balanced by execution risk, a contract renewal cycle that may occur during a time of tightening budgets and evolving competitive landscape in a slowing macroeconomic climate," read the note. Now, Zoom is reinvesting in research and development, as well as sales and marketing, to expand its business into chat, contact center and phone. "Our assessment is positive on Zoom's underlying technology, continued innovation, and market position, and we are impressed by the cash-generative financial profile, though we believe these are offset by near-term growth and margin headwinds as Zoom pivots to optimize business mix and ramps spending to explore new avenues of growth as well as address competitive evolution," JPM analyst Mark Murphy wrote in a Friday note.
