An innovative approach to controlling wearable robots takes the optimization process out of the laboratory. This mimicry leads to disrupted gene transcription and a diminished antiviral response. Human tissue resembling the brain’s cortex can be grown from stem cells in vitro. An automated carbohydrate synthesizer has been developed that could remedy this. A portable ankle exoskeleton uses a data-driven method and wearable sensors to adapt to the user as they walk in a natural setting. Such movement has now been observed in exquisite detail. Optical superluminal motion in the binary neutron-star merger GW170817 is used to constrain the speed and morphology of the structured jet, and improve constraints on the inclination angle of the merging binary system. Multiepoch imagery of the circumstellar dust shell in WR140 is modelled to trace the expansion of the dust plume, which seems to be subject to radiation-driven acceleration. Nature looks at how effective they are and why more kids haven’t had them. It emerges that the SARS-CoV-2 virus has evolved to mimic one of the histone proteins that package DNA in the cell nucleus. The method uses a data-driven model to infer a user’s energy consumption and to personalize the assistance it provides. A research-rating system has identified gaps in studies that assess the connection between diet and various health risks.

Transforming data collection communication to firms – 13 October ... (Bank of England)

The Bank and FCA agreed to accept, in principle, all of the recommendations made by the joint transformation programmes industry committee. The next update from the joint transformation programme will be in November. For other recommendations, the joint transformation programme will need to explore the solutions further to understand how they might be delivered and the associated business case. During phase one of the joint transformation programme, the Data Standards Committee commissioned a review of data standards. This will ensure we have the widest possible set of views to get the best solutions to the issues we are tackling. The recommendations are aimed to target a selection of issues that were identified for the phase one use cases: the Quarterly derivatives statistical return ‘Form DQ’ and the Financial Resilience Survey (FRS). The programme is overseen by two committees: the Reporting Transformation Committee and the Data Standards Committee. Earlier this year we ran a nominations process for phase two of the programme. During phase two, the joint transformation programme will focus on a new set of use cases. We think completing the design of an integrated ‘transformed’ commercial real estate collection is a critical stepping stone to the delivery of future use cases, for instance a consolidated loan collection. Incident, Outsourcing and Third Party reporting (OATP) - Ensuring the operational resilience of the financial sector is a key priority for the Bank of England, PRA and FCA. The event provided an opportunity for our members to meet those that they will be working with face to face and have an introduction to the programme.

The manager says that portfolio highlights in the first half of this year felt limited, but the performance of MRC’s longstanding investment in Telecom Plus was pleasing (it has been a beneficiary of the changing landscape in the energy supply market). The manager says that, in view of the deterioration in the economic outlook, some notable changes were made to the portfolio in the first half. At a portfolio level, performance was primarily hindered by MRC’s holdings in the consumer discretionary sector, in companies such as Watches of Switzerland, Dunelm and Jet2 (although the manager says that the operational performance of Watches of Switzerland and Dunelm has remained encouraging). BPCR has chosen to designate the entire amount of this interim dividend as an interest distribution and shareholders in receipt of such a dividend will be treated for UK tax purposes as though they have received a payment of interest, which will result in a reduction in the corporation tax payable by BPCR. As part of the amendment, the loan was converted to a sustainability linked loan and all of the economics associated with the original transaction were realised, including the exit premium. Additionally, as part of the amendment, RCOI’s allocation to the loan was reduced from $14.8m to $13.9m in order to comply with the Company’s diversification policies.

A modelling study in the US, where care for people with diabetes accounts for around 1 in 4 healthcare dollars spent, estimates that the cost of SGLT2 inhibitors will need to drop by 70% for them to become cost effective as first line treatment. Although cefepime/enmetazobactam came out as non-inferior to piperacillin/tazobactam, how these findings can be applied to practice seems unclear. According to a study in the US, standard analgesia after knee or shoulder arthroscopy is 20-80 tablets of oxycodone, codeine, or hydromorphone to be taken on an as needed basis. Is exposure to the sun or to a doctor more likely to lead to a diagnosis of melanoma? Unfortunately, the first randomised controlled trial of a CEP system has found no difference in the primary endpoint of a stroke within 72 hours or discharge from hospital between those randomised to having a TAVR with a CEP system and controls. A US based registry found that, since CEP devices were commercially approved, around 13% of TAVR procedures have used them.
