“We are extremely proud to witness the completion of Battersea Power Station which is testament to the years of passion and commitment put into redeveloping what was once a derelict building into a flourishing community. Since the consortium of Malaysian companies purchased Battersea Power Station in 2012, the site has been transformed into a new ’15-minute’ live, work, play neighbourhood with community at its core. “The Malaysian partners in this project are keenly aware of the special place and meaning that this power station has in the hearts of all Londoners. “The transformation of what was once a coal-fired power station into a holistic residential, retail and leisure destination that is also capable of supplying sustainable energy has marked a very important milestone in London’s property development history. Not only has a new destination been created from reviving a disused power station but a thriving community has already been established since opening the first phase of the project, Circus West Village, that we are committed to nurturing for years to come.” Electric Boulevard, a new pedestrianised high street, which runs from the south of the Power Station, between Frank Gehry’s Prospect Place and Foster + Partners’ Battersea Roof Gardens to the new Battersea Power Station Zone 1 Underground station, will also open on Friday 14th October 2022.
Letters: Mike Lee on emissions from its chimneys, and Jane Marsh on the innovative use made of waste heat that it generated.
[Letters, 9 October](https://www.theguardian.com/food/2022/oct/09/a-new-challenge-for-marmalade-makers)) is correct that cooling water was drawn from and returned to the Thames without any steam being generated by the cooling process, and the chimneys emitted smoke. But Claude Scott ( [Letters, 7 October](https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/oct/07/squirrel-free-on-a-wing-and-a-preyer)) is also correct that steam issued from the chimneys. One of my school friends lived in Churchill Gardens in the 1960s and, at a time when very few homes had central heating, it was always a treat to visit her family’s warm and cosy flat.

This strong framework provides spaces to meet the varying needs of Battersea’s different populations, with each space providing a different piece of the whole. This enables the ongoing redevelopment to be both responsive and resilient to an ever-changing market, whilst allowing for a greater degree of variation in design. This masterplan updates the unbuilt phases of the 2011 consented scheme, in response to the complex site constraints and significant evolution of the wider physical and economic context.

He applauded the stakeholders for all of their efforts in rehabilitating and redeveloping the Battersea Power Station. “As a long-term institutional investor, we look forward to witnessing Battersea Power Station flourish as a sustainable community and business hub in the next phase of its existence,” he added. Almost 40 years after it closed, the landmark is opening to the public as a retail and leisure site.
Bringing old industrial buildings back into use is "challenging", he says. Turbine Hall A, built in the 1930s, is the place to go for premium fashion collections, BPDC says. Here, a semi-circular control desk and two long banks of switchboards have been painstakingly preserved. They are among 254 flats making up the residential offering here. It was removed by a previous owner as part of a doomed project Of the homes built so far, 20% are affordable, BPDC says, and a "mechanism has been agreed" with Wandsworth Council to look at the "possibility for more affordable homes to be delivered in the future". Looming over the River Thames, Battersea Power Station lay derelict for decades. Two firms that made bricks for the original buildings were called on to supply 1.75 million matching replacements. According to Historic England, the commercial offering is "part of a planning balance". Keith Garner, a founding member of the Battersea Power Station Community Group, believes this "sublime, awesome, thrilling" landmark has not been treated with the "respect it deserves". The power station is three times the size of the Tate Modern, he says, underlining the scale of the project. "Throughout the restoration process, we have tried to reuse as much of the existing fabric within the power station as possible," Mr Murphy says.
