But it's better to go into the game feeling like we do tonight." Conceding first in six of their eight league matches has not helped matters. Arsenal have won eight of their nine league games this season – only in 1903-04 (in the second tier) have they won as many as nine of their opening 10 games to a league campaign. "It is completely different. Liverpool scored seven goals at Ibrox, with Salah, one of a multitude of high-profile members of Juergen Klopp's squad to have struggled to get going this term, netting the fastest hat-trick in Champions League history, off the bench. The two teams were at the peak of their powers, as City went on to win a fourth Premier League title in five years, while Liverpool, second by a point, won two trophies and reached the Champions League final as they went close to an unprecedented quadruple.

Rangers vs Liverpool live online: Arfield & Firmino goals, score, stats ... (AS English)

Live updates as Rangers host Liverpool at Ibrox, Glasgow, in UEFA Champions League Group A today, Wednesday 12 October 2022. Kick-off: 3pm ET.

Defeat to the Gunners was the Reds’ third league game in a row without a win, and left them down in 10th in the English top flight. “We have to be really focused on the transition moments and the times where we need to defend. From the left, Lundstram pings a pinpoint diagonal to Sakala, whose first touch takes the ball out of his feet and into the area. Elliott scampers forward and dinks a ball through for Núñez to run into the Rangers box and square for Firmino. [it's turned into a thrilling contest](https://en.as.com/resultados/futbol/champions/2022_2023/directo/grupos_a_4_425244/) in the second half. Tsimikas gets forward for Liverpool on the left, before stroking a curling cross over to the back post. His backpass from the right is sloppy and mishit, and Colak is a matter of inches away from intercepting. Alisson rushes out to narrow the angle, but it doesn't matter: Arfield's finish is low and right into the corner. Colak tries to find Kent, who is bursting into the penalty area, but his ball is overhit and the chance is lost. He checks back and lifts a ball over the top for Elliott to run on to, but the Uruguayan's pass is overhit, and bounces out. It's right there for him to hit, but he can't get the right power or direction on it, and his shot is blocked. A moment later, Elliott pops up in a similar position on the right-hand side of the area, but is also crowded out.

Firmino’s simple equaliser soothed Liverpool’s anxiety but it was not until the second half that they found the creativity, energy and cutting edge to humiliate an unravelling Rangers. The inclination of both to drift inside made for a congested Liverpool attack that lacked width in the first half. Even the pathetic attempts by a small number of enraged Rangers supporters to charge at Liverpool’s fans after the game were laughed at by the away section. There was change in defence with Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konaté replacing the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joël Matip but also familiar problems. Such a view can be complemented by Rodríguez providing 1.62 shot-creating actions per 90 minutes compared to Fabinho's 1.52 per 90min. Such displays convinced ex-Tijuana boss Miguel Herrera and Club America to part ways with $7m (£6.3m) to sign the midfielder. His current contract expires in 2024. However, it might have shocked some to see Betis pay a reported fee of just €4m for his services in January 2020. International recognition would arrive while Rodríguez continued to ply his trade in Mexico. (Statistics from 2021/2022 season). He helped Manuel Pellegrini's side register back-to-back top-six finishes in a holding midfield role. So, who is Rodríguez and what would he bring to Liverpool? However, the Brazil international could not have been more unlucky since arriving on Merseyside and now finds himself facing a lengthy absence through injury.

Transfer Gossip: Kylian Mbappe to Liverpool 'WILL happen' as fee ... (Teamtalk.com)

Liverpool have a deal for Kylian Mbappe well within reach, Man Utd have their eyes on De Gea's replacement, while Chelsea's chase for Leao has a big update.

In the end, they opted to bring in Martin Dubravka from Newcastle on a season’s loan. And Leao played a leading role in their title win last season. And while he stayed at PSG by signing an extension, Mbappe has confirmed he’s held talks with the Reds in the past. Reports suggest PSG could be looking for as much as £350m (€400m) to sell Mbappe in January. As such, they claim they are unwilling to bid for the 23-year-old any time soon. That chase is seemingly being led by Real Madrid, with the Spanish giants firmly on his trail for a number of seasons. Six things spotted in Rangers vs Liverpool as Roberto Firmino and ... (Liverpool.com)

Liverpool hammered Rangers in Scotland, winning 7-1 at Ibrox. Roberto Firmino was excellent while Mohamed Salah netted a superb hat-trick.

[Mohamed Salah](https://www.liverpool.com/liverpool-fc-news/features/liverpool-transfer-mohamed-salah-solution-25096952) starting on the right-hand side, you might have thought that there would be a weakness for Liverpool. Most of his decent hold-up was too deep for him to make an impact off the back of it. Hopefully he's saved one or two for Sunday, when Liverpool will need him to be pinpoint with his shooting once again. He did get chance to do that a couple of times, but could not make the most of it until the goal and was visibly frustrated. As long as he does that regularly, the rest will follow. Along with Fabinho, who was poor in possession at times and lacking pace, the four struggled to make an impact. Liverpool need to find a way of getting more from their big-money summer signing, but won’t do so by playing like this. The Greek was beaten several times by Fashion Sakala and gave away possession too easily at times too. That, for sure, will do the Liverpool number 11 a world of good. Were it not for the goals of Brazilian forward Firmino this season, Liverpool might have been even worse off than what they currently are. With their midfield essentially absent, 33-year-old former Huddersfield and Burnley man Scott Arfield was able to move into a vast open space and finish well, into the corner of the net and past Mohamed Salah sealed it further by adding a superbly taken hat-trick, not long after he came off the bench.

Roberto Firmino: A Man For All Seasons And All Systems At Liverpool (Forbes)

Firmino is now part of that optimism, and before the tournament begins in November he’ll be doing his best to get Liverpool back in good shape, too. The extraordinary goalscoring exploits of another Premier League striker, Erling Haaland, and the performances of Gabriel Jesus at Arsenal, have caught the eye so far this season. His hat trick scored within six minutes and 12 seconds from that central position suggested it’s something that might be worth pursuing in the future. His broadest of grins and luminous white teeth scuppered any attempts to hide the pleasure he has taken from his day's work. “Bobby is crucial for us,” Klopp said before the start of this season. But he was substituted by his manager, Jurgen Klopp, in the 73rd minute, replaced by Diogo Jota.

Solving Foden conundrum will be key to Man City breaking ... (Manchester Evening News)

Manchester City will be looking for only their second win at Liverpool FC since 2003 - and Phil Foden could be key to doing that.

A flourishing relationship with Kevin De Bruyne has resulted in plenty of goals provided for Haaland from that right side, and of Foden's seven goals this season, five have come while playing as a right-winger. Foden has a good record against Liverpool - three goals and two assists in seven appearances - with his brilliant goal at Anfield last season showing why he's so dangerous off the left-wing. Yet Foden's most impressive form this season has come from the right - a position he only played once in last season on the opening day. With Gomez likely to be right-back on Sunday, Foden would be confident of winning that duel. [Liverpool](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/liverpool-fc), while Ilkay Gundogan was brilliant in their only win on the red side of Stanley Park back in 2021. Key to City's good form so far this season is the supporting cast behind Haaland, so getting the likes of [Phil Foden](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/phil-foden), Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and co.

Liverpool star is 'killing' Salah as forward has been hampered by ... (Football365.com)

The form of Mohamed Salah is being "killed" by Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez as the Egypt international is better of being played through the middle.

“City are the favourites and they are flying. But now with Darwin Nunez it has changed a little bit, he is the one who will run into the spaces and you have the wingers as being more open. But with Darwin now, it has changed for him. “So I’m not sure what he’s going to do against City, it’s going to be interesting. [Klopp has conceded that they are already out of the Premier League title race. It only took him five minutes to claim the match ball.

Liverpool 'can table £131m' for Kylian Mbappé as transfer for Declan ... (Liverpool.com)

Media Digest: Liverpool are being linked with some blockbuster transfer moves, with Kylian Mbappé and Declan Rice both supposedly on the table for FSG.

[Alexis Sánchez](https://www.liverpool.com/liverpool-fc-news/features/liverpool-transfer-luis-suarez-puskas-25074492) infamously insisted on living in London, leaving Arsenal to swoop in and secure a deal. [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/liverpool-rice-sources-klopp/), who claim Liverpool ‘retain a strong interest’ amid their search for a marquee midfield signing. The player is said to be ‘willing to move up north’, and would therefore not take significant persuading if a transfer did materialise. Whether this would be enough remains to be seen. The original report speculated that this could leave Liverpool as the only feasible option. Kylian Mbappé’s new PSG deal put an end to transfer speculation for all of a couple of months. But according to [GiveMeSport](https://www.givemesport.com/88070042-liverpool-world-class-150m-star-now-willing-to-move-to-anfield), Declan Rice’s name will not be added to the list. Liverpool have now won all four of their UEFA Youth League matches, guaranteeing qualification to the next round. The 16-year-old has been dominating at this age group anyway since joining the club in the summer, but it seemed inevitable that he would save his best work for Rangers. It’s been an all-too-familiar narrative in the past. Liverpool were very much on the right side of an eight-goal bonanza against Rangers in the Champions League, winning 7-1. Credible, incredible and anything in between: we round it all up in one place here, taking a sideways look at the day’s media goings-on from around the world.

'Been so spoiled' - Paul Merson makes Liverpool vs Man City ... (Liverpool Echo)

Liverpool face Manchester City in the Premier League at Anfield on Sunday and Paul Merson has made his prediction.

“Klopp didn't foresee this problem, and will need to find a way around it - it's just a little blip for the side. “Liverpool have been so spoiled by brilliance over the years that a couple of players being out of form has caused mayhem. I don't see how Liverpool are going to stop them from scoring at least two goals this weekend.” It's hard for players to play out of position in big games, but I don't see how you can keep Nunez out of the side. And Merson has predicted the Reds to suffer a second consecutive defeat in the top flight, with a 3-1 loss at the hands of City. [Jurgen Klopp](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/all-about/jurgen-klopp) ’s team do go into the fixture on the back of an [emphatic 7-1 win at Rangers](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/match-reports/liverpool-mystery-mohamed-salah-message-25249037) in the Champions League on Tuesday. “Do I see Liverpool winning? “Liverpool were at their absolute best when (Mohamed) Salah could make his runs inside. “With Luis Diaz injured, however, someone will have to fill in on the left. This will be an interesting challenge for both players. “If Firmino plays a slightly withdrawn role, Liverpool can play all four of their forwards. [Reds](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/all-about/liverpool-fc?f=) welcome their rivals to Anfield on Sunday.

Liverpool should get new pressing monster as Chelsea 'contingency ... (Liverpool.com)

Liverpool could have a rare opportunity to conduct a transfer raid on Chelsea, securing an ideal player for Jürgen Klopp's rebuilding project in the ...

[Chelsea’s](https://www.liverpool.com/liverpool-fc-news/transfer-news/liverpool-transfer-fsg-chelsea-mistake-25175621) last opportunity to cash in on Mount. [Graham Potter](https://www.liverpool.com/liverpool-fc-news/transfer-news/liverpool-transfer-january-chelsea-potter-24998204), and the intention is still very much to tie him down to a longer deal at Chelsea. Likewise, new man [Todd Boehly](https://www.liverpool.com/liverpool-fc-news/features/fsg-liverpool-todd-boehly-decision-24965749) has proved far more receptive to intra-big-six deals than his predecessor. But as the possibility of a transfer chance edges ever nearer, Liverpool must be alert to what would be an excellent opportunity. Klopp would be able to ask him to go again and again without running too much of a risk. Then there are all the usual benefits about buying a homegrown talent. Meanwhile, when it comes to output, he is highly productive. Significantly, Mount also has a near-enough spotless injury history. On Liverpool’s end, the deal makes plenty of sense too. Even so, the whispers that a transfer could be in the offing for a young player with more than 100 Premier League appearances to his name should cause those at Liverpool got the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané as ‘second choices’ — on the other side of the coin, their failure to move on from missing out on Aurélien Tchouaméni this summer cost them dearly. Currently, Mason Mount is in no imminent danger of leaving.

Latest Liverpool injury updates with key defensive duo set to miss ... (Liverpool.com)

Having cruised to a 7-1 Champions League win at Rangers, Liverpool host Manchester City on Sunday, with Jürgen Klopp's side aiming to reduce a 13-point gap.

"Lucho looks like a quick healer but anyway we have obviously to be careful with that. “Joel just felt a little bit," Klopp stated. "Because I thought it is longer when I saw him after the game. Andy Robertson was also given minutes off the bench, marking his return to action after a lay-off. It’s not like this.” Shorter than a month; two weeks I heard but we have to see if that’s right. But I take the two weeks easily. Díaz has, arguably, been his side's biggest attacking threat this season, registering four goals and three assists. He said: “It is always difficult to say. De Bruyne expects 'the best Liverpool possible' for City's visit to Anfield (The Guardian)

The Manchester City midfielder said of Jurgen Klopp's team: 'Obviously they lost some points but they are still Liverpool'

“I have always got the feeling that at one point they can just bounce back because they have a quality manager and all the players are quality,” the defender said. They are more of an up-and-down team and we are a team who has more control of the game, so if you can control that style of play then maybe you have more of a chance. “I don’t look at it that way – obviously they lost some points but they are still Liverpool and I expect them to be good; that’s the only way I see it.” It is never easy to go there so we have to make sure we are in a good place.” “The last few years we’ve done well, even last year if we didn’t win, so I think it’s probably going to be a good game again,” De Bruyne said. “Maybe we have more control of the game.
