Political advertising is a form of campaigning that allows candidates to directly convey their message to voters and influence the political debate. “Apart from this team of fact checkers and AI who work in shifts, we have reporting mechanisms in place and are partnered with AFP (Associated Foreign Press) to flag misinformation. We are committed to continuing this work in the lead-up to, during and after voting day,” added Noudhy Valdryno, head of public policy for Meta Malaysia. Ads about elections or politics that run in Malaysia will also appear in the Ad Library so that people can see what ads are running, who saw them and how much was spent. “We have a three-step strategy by first removing any content that violates community guidelines, reducing distribution of low quality and false news and removing the ability to monetise said content. “We will also allow political advertisements to be made on Meta but we have our own ‘Add Transparency’ measures in place.

It was at times unclear from the news reports if such announcements were referring to past, current, or future allocations. “As there are no laws to regulate the conduct of a caretaker government, it cannot be considered an offence. This is to ensure that the country is never without a government for a period of time,” he told Malay Mail when contacted. “We also call for either the enactment of a Caretaker Government Act to regulate the conduct of a government that is also contesting in an election, or the appointment of a temporary non-political caretaker government during elections so as to ensure fairness among contesting political parties,” he added. “A distinction has to be drawn between such verbal promises made during campaigning and promises made in a party’s manifesto because the very purpose of an election manifesto is to list out the promises a party is offering to fulfill should the party win,” he said. “But if the allocation or promise made by the caretaker PM is not part of a pre-approved plan by the Cabinet or part of the party’s election manifesto, and is conditional upon the caretaker PM winning the election, it could be considered as a corrupt practice under Section 10 of the Election Offences Act 1954,” he said.
