Fred then caps a tremendous performance by robbing Kane of the ball, but Rashford is offside as United try to counter. Early in the first half, Conte was yelling and gesturing to his players with practically every kick of the ball, as though moving pieces about a Subbuteo board. He won the ball high up the pitch and was purposeful in possession to keep United attacks moving, helping to give them a balance that hasn’t always been apparent this season.

Rashford exploded into life from the restart, pummelling a shot at the Spurs stopper once more. Bruno finally got the goal his performance deserved with a wicked curler beyond the diving Lloris. The Frenchman then worked overtime as he stopped a Fernandes free-kick and a cracking Luke Shaw volley from hitting the back of the net. Nineteen attempts at smashing the Spurs door down in the first half, and all it took was one nudge in the second. United racked up an incredible 14 shots inside a frantic 30 minutes that saw Bruno and Fred bound forwards to support Rashford down the middle. The Brazilian curled a shot off Lloris’s left post, whipping up the crowd in the process.
