Chief among them is the main event which pits former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira (whose reign ended on a technicality) against the ruthless Islam Makhachev, who will have former champ Khabib Nurmagomedov in his corner. For this one UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling (who has lost a lot of fans thanks to the company he keeps as of late) defending against former champ T.J.
The Sporting News breaks down the betting lines for the UFC 280 main event showdown between Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev for the vacant UFC ...
If you are considering betting on the method of finish, FanDuel has Oliveira by submission at +320 and by (T)KO at +500. Makhachev is a fantastic grappler who smothers his opponents with his Sambo. FanDuel has Makhachev as nearly a 2-1 favorite at -174, while Oliveira sits at +136. Since then, Makhachev has steamrolled opponent after opponent under the watchful eye of former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. He's pursuing his fourth consecutive finish but finds himself up against a fighter who is arguably just as dominant as he has been in Makhachev. One of those streaks will end at UFC 280 when they meet for the vacant UFC lightweight title inside Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi on October 22.
The UFC 280 fight card features Oliviera vs. Makhachev, Sterling vs. Dillashaw, and Yan vs. O'Malley. We'll give you our predictions and the best bets to ...
If so — if Oliviera is not in the right frame of mind to recapture the title he lost on the scale in his previous fight — expect Makhachev to force Oliviera to submit in the middle rounds of the fight. [Mark Zuckerberg has a new enemy: MMA fans and media](https://www.themanual.com/culture/ufc-mark-zuckerberg-attends-event/) [Confused about a ‘no contest’ decision in UFC? Dariush is solid and game, but Gamrot is a monster. Both Gaethje and Poirier were fan favorites to beat Oliviera for the title, and he submitted both. Should the real Charles Oliviera show up, Makhachev is in real trouble. O’Malley will feint and lob shots from the outside while continuously moving as Yan attempts to get inside to do damage with inside-fighting. In his eighth pro fight, Makhachev fought Mansour Barnaoui and faced significant trouble in the fight. Fans like to point to Oliviera having quicker wins than Khabib over common opponents like Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier, and it’s reasonable to think the retired Khabib has sent his pupil to erase all doubt about Khabib’s legacy as an all-time great. Makhachev likes to take fights to the ground quickly, but Oliviera is the most dangerous ground fighter in the UFC. Makhachev is the most intriguing of the fights on this card, but not the only interesting fight this weekend. Oliviera attacks with abandon, and Makhachev is a patient assassin. The betting line for this was heavily one-sided toward Makhachev when the fight was announced.

Pick: Dariush ML (+165) -- This is the kind of fight where the natural recommendation is to just give this fight a pass due to a few too many factors that cause uncertainty. Outside of Oliveira getting a quick stoppage on the feet -- which is possible -- it will take until later in the fight before either attrition or a mistake leads to the finish. Pick: Yan by decision (-105) -- O'Malley has loads of talent, but he has a tendency to be hesitant against higher-level competition. The event is headlined by a pair of world title fights as Charles Oliveira looks to recapture the lightweight championship he lost on the scales in May when he faces Islam Makhachev and Aljamain Sterling defends the bantamweight title against former champion TJ Dillashaw. With that in mind, we have you covered with our picks for the best bet on each main card fight with odds from Caesars Sportsbook. The main card also features former bantamweight champion Petr Yan as he takes on rising superstar Sean O'Malley in the biggest test of O'Malley's young career.

Sean O'Malley is aware that UFC 280 opponent Petr Yan is known for his slow starts, but he's not expecting that to be the case this weekend.
“It’s a completely different mindset when you have a three-round fight compared to a five-round fight. “I think this is a massive fight. This is a massive fight.” “Petr was literally the only guy in the top 10 without a fight. I went back to the UFC and said ‘hey I want to book a fight.’ Obviously that one wasn’t a satisfying victory,” said O’Malley. “He was the only guy after that Pedro Munhoz fight.

We look ahead to UFC 280 with some predictions for the fights including Charles Oliveira vs Islam Makhachev and Petr Yan vs Sean O'Malley.
I believe he’s destined for the top and will grind his way to the biggest victory of his UFC career on Saturday night. The 33-year-old is a veteran of the 125lb landscape heading into the 16th fight of her lengthy UFC career – but Chookagian has only challenged for UFC gold on one occasion previously. Book your seat now for UFC 280, exclusively live on Saturday 22 October from 5pm on BT Sport Box Office. He’ll need to be careful on the mat though with O’Malley an accomplished jiu-jitsu brown belt despite rarely relying on his grappling over the course of his UFC career to date. Yan’s boxing might well be the most polished attribute of his skillset but he remains one of the most well-rounded fighters in the promotion and could look to utilise takedowns in order to negate O’Malley’s physical advantage. A black belt under the tutelage of his coach and former UFC champion Matt Serra, Sterling is an opportunist who uses his athleticism to take advantage of chaotic scrambles for position. However, I believe experience could be the key to success at UFC 280 with Oliveira by far the more battle-tested of the two men having fought against the best of the best for a number of years now. Also a talented grappler – albeit Division III, not the same calibre as Dillashaw – Sterling has found his success in the UFC thanks to an uncanny ability to find a way to his opponent’s back. [TJ Dillashaw](https://www.bt.com/sport/ufc/fighters/tj-dillashaw) is the perfect opponent to test him given the credentials of his challenger on Saturday night. To state the obvious, this fight will be won and lost in the battle for supremacy on the ground; if Makhachev is as good as those in his corner have relentlessly claimed, he should be able to control Oliveira from top position and inflict some serious damage on a man who cuts notoriously easily. His ability to control the contest on the ground will be tested to its limits against Oliveira however, with the 33-year-old Brazilian the most prolific submission artist in UFC history with 16 finishes to his name. [Charles Oliveira](https://www.bt.com/sport/ufc/fighters/charles-oliveira) against the most dominant contender in the division, [Islam Makhachev](https://www.bt.com/sport/ufc/fighters/islam-makhachev), in a battle that could turn out any which way of a million possibilities.
Brett Apply previews three fights on the loaded UFC 280 card, including both championship bouts that will take place in Abu Dhabi.
Of the two, I actually think it’s possible Rosa has a wrestling advantage as well and can earn top control time. Plus, Lansberg has been TKO’d a couple times in the UFC and I don’t think it’s impossible Rosa could hurt her at some point as well. Dillashaw can be found at +150 or better on other books in the industry, which is not a bad line in my opinion. Rosa, on the other side, has proven to be one of the highest volume strikers in the entire division. Dillashaw on the other side might charge at him like a maniac and try to knock him out. Sterling is a very effective submission grappler and specializes in the back-take specifically. Sterling will carry a four-inch reach advantage, and I didn’t like some of the things I saw in Dillashaw’s last win against Cory Sandhagen. Oliveira will very likely be dependent on a finish, and I don’t think targeting his inside-the-distance line at +195 is a terrible idea. Oliveira is the one of the two who’s been dropped a bunch recently, in part because he’s overly aggressive and leaves defensive openings. On paper, Oliveira has the submission grappling pedigree to survive a wrestling attack. He’s simply putting everything together and is a joy to watch. He’s extremely aggressive on the feet, and a dangerous finisher.
Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhacehv vie for the UFC's lightweight championship at UFC 280 this weekend, in a long-anticipated match-up for the vacant belt.

SportsLine's Kyle Marley reveals his UFC 280 picks and predictions for Charles Oliveira vs. Islam Makhachev in Abu Dhabi.
Dobson (+175) Armen Petrosyan (-200) vs. Dillashaw (+155) Aljamain Sterling (-175) vs. Dillashaw (+155). Muhammad (21-3-1) is known for his nonstop pace that involves a combination of grappling, wrestling and striking. In the co-main event, bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling (-175) defends his title against No. The late-blooming Oliveira (33-8-1) had lost four of six and appeared headed toward journeyman status before he embarked on his current winning streak. Marley also has strong picks for Oliveira vs. This probably comes down to who is having success in the wrestling, and I will side with Muhammad," Marley told SportsLine. Makhachev is a -190 favorite (risk $190 to win $100), while Oliveira comes back at +170 in the latest UFC 280 odds from Caesars Sportsbook. But to become champion he must get past the top-ranked Oliveira, who has won 11 straight fights and has dominated the division since the turn of the decade.

The Sporting News breaks down the betting lines for the UFC 280 co-main event showdown between TJ Dillashaw and UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling.
There may be a temptation to bet on Sterling to submit Dillashaw at +500, but the former champion has never been submitted in his MMA career. He'll likely make it to the final bell but will have to watch as Sterling has his hand raised in victory. Sterling isn’t a refined striker by any means, but his purpose for striking is to ensure his opponent's hands are always moving and remain open for the takedown. Dillashaw may be a better striker, but Sterling perhaps has the most underrated grappling in the UFC. Dillashaw has won the title on two occasions: a stunning upset against Renan Barao in 2015 and a stoppage of rival Cody Garbrandt in 2017. Aljamain Sterling may be one of the most disrespected champions on the roster.

He added: “In no moment, you never wanted this fight to be in Brazil. “I never heard you say my name. He’s like a whore on the side of the road.” They never come to my house, so I knock on people’s doors and go to theirs.” I want to make this in Brazil.’ We ask about Brazil many times. Asked about his reaction, O’Malley said today: “I mean, Conor, some of the stuff he’s done recently, I don’t want to be. I like being in places like this,” Oliveira said. But as fans began to boo, he changed tack, saying: “I’m going to smash Petr, how about that? Their rivalry went to another level when they faced off on stage. He can test these nuts in his mouth.” I wonder if there’s something going on again that might be a little fishy T.J.” Asked about his claims, Sterling said: “Actually I got a couple questions.
Abu Dhabi, UAE – UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling has had one of the more unique title reigns we've seen in many years.
So for me to go out there and take out a guy like TJ I think that puts me up there with the conversation,” Sterling told the media on Wednesday. Who’s done a ton of work, beat a lot of people up, and who people regard as one of the best bantamweights of all time. Great opportunity to fight a guy who’s been a mainstay in the division.
