I really wish that a lot more jokes worked but this is a simple film that deserves respect for its intentions. It is such a pleasant surprise to see a filmmaker not just talk about equality but also do it from the POV of someone from the other side. It is not the hero or ‘us’ who teaches a lesson or two about empathy. Whether the film works or not is a different question, but Anudeep and his team deserve praise and respect for what they have set out to achieve and for what they have achieved with regards to this aspect. The chemistry between Siva and Sathyaraj works to a decent extent, and is one of the few highlights of the movie which lacks a coherent screenplay.

But the lack of a coherent screenplay is evident throughout the movie. Sivakarthikeyan tries his best to single-handedly shoulder most of the sequences that he appears in. Their only hope is Anbu's father Ulaganathan (Sathyaraj), a supposedly progressive man, who takes pride in his ancestors' contribution to the society. They are after his life because of the sole reason that he fell in love with Jessica (Maria Riaboshapka), who hails from Britain. After a few twists and turns, the school teacher is asked by the neighbours and others to leave the village. It is so obvious that the hilarious stretches are connected by a generic thread about a love story between a Tamil guy and a Brit girl. He holds the film together with his charming screen presence and his knack of doing comedy is unmatchable. Prince, as the promos promised, ends up as a harmless romantic comedy. The film relies a lot on quirky one-liners and wordplay. When Anbu, a social science teacher, falls in love with his colleague Jessica (British), an English teacher, he hopes that his father would be proud of him to fall in love with someone from a different country altogether. Anudeep’s style of comedy is not everyone’s cup of tea. While 'Jathi Ratnalu' looked every bit homegrown, 'Prince' looks half-manufactured. This is not to say that 'Prince' is unfunny. It has its moments.

This is not to say that 'Prince' is unfunny. Despite the self-evidently unpretentious characters (the male lead is adorable), many jokes are flat. It's not clear why this film was not shot in Telugu separately to at least an extent. Manoj Paramahamsa's cinematography is sincere. 'Jessica' is quite remarkable. Anand (Sivakarthikeyan) and his colleague Jessica (debutante Maria Riaboshapka as a Britisher) work in a school in a small town. For those of you who don't know, 'Prince' is directed by the same guy who made 'Jathi Ratnalu', the 2021 blockbuster comedy. Anand and his father are too naive for their own good. Anand's father (Sathyaraj as a respected elder who suffers from irrational patriotism) is proud upon knowing that his son is in love with Jessica, whom he believes is a French woman. Imagine a middle-aged, small-town Indian father who has a problem with his daughter because she didn't opt for an inter-caste marriage.

The humour in Prince won't come across as a shocker to the ones who have watched Anudeep's debut Jathi Ratnalu, as his sophomore film also follows the same style of comedy. Be it the naivety in romance, the over-enthusiastic body language, or the floral ...

But the flaws become extremely glaring when the film focusses, for instance, on the romance. For 'mokkai' comedy to work, listeners must get used to context and the identity of the person cracking the jokes. As long as the gags keep coming, we remain distracted from the criminally under-written screenplay and lacklustre staging. A case in point is the whole sequence involving a bottle gourd. But a few minutes into the film, I became kinder, as the outlandish portions are brilliant. The plot of Prince is generic and predictable.
