Your Cat Knows When You're Using Your 'Cat Talk' Voice (Gizmodo)

New research suggests that cats can distinguish their owner's voice from that of a stranger's, while also being able to identify when their owner is ...

“The fact that they show a special reaction to a special way we talk to them means, I think, that we are something more just than a food provider in their world.” And in the third, they listened to a stranger doing the same. Ten of the 16 cats had a noticeable increase in behaviors like moving their ears toward the voice, dilated pupils, or simply moving in general when they heard their owner’s voice—behaviors that were then dialed back down when the stranger’s voice returned. This difference could be a sign that the typical pet cat simply isn’t exposed to as many new people as the typical dog is. The researchers set up three scenarios, all of which involved the cats listening to pre-recorded voices of either their owner or a female stranger. The findings are the latest to indicate that cats can indeed form strong social bonds with humans.

Your cat can recognize your voice. Yes, really. (National Geographic)

Filling a long-standing gap in feline research, a small study shows that cats can distinguish their owners' voices from those of strangers.

This indicated that the cats could recognize when their owners were talking to them, de Mouzon says. Esther Bouma, Reijgwart’s collaborator at Purr Doctors, agrees, though she cautions that the work doesn’t show that cats know what we’re saying. At each home, she played audio recordings of both the cat’s owner and strangers speaking the same phrases, while video recording the cat’s responses. So De Mouzon recruited 16 cat owners in Bordeaux to take part in the experiment. They also did not show a response when they heard a stranger’s voice, whether using cat talk or adult talk. [Charlotte de Mouzon](https://www.ethocat.com/equipe-ethocat), fellow cat lover and ethologist—a scientist who studies animal behavior—has devoted her career to understanding the cat-human bond from the kitty’s perspective. Another roadblock may be the perception that cats are less social than other pets, Vonk says. For instance, we might use different words and phrases around friends than we do talking to our bosses. They showed no such response when owners were speaking to other people, or to strangers’ voices. She first recorded the owners speaking specific phrases, such as “Do you want to play?”, “Do you want a treat?”, and “See you later.” Their voices were recorded twice: once as if they were talking to their cat, and once as if they were speaking to a person. [(What do cats think about us? What’s less clear is whether she is aware I am addressing her.

Your cat really does prefer your voice to that of a stranger's (New Scientist)

Unlike dogs, which often enthusiastically respond to everyone, cats choosily respond only to their owner's voice with an increase in certain behaviours.

Even when they heard strangers speaking to them in an affectionate manner, calling them by name and inviting them to play or eat, the cats essentially ignored them, says de Mouzon. The team recorded the owners speaking in French to their cats at home as they called the pet by name in the high-pitched voice they normally used in that situation. The cats ranged in age from 8 months to 2 years old, and their owners were all veterinary students at the National Veterinary School in Alfort, near Paris.

The first three phrases were in “adult-directed” speech, recorded when the owner spoke them to de Mouzon as if they were conversing with a grown human being. “We are the caregivers—they can sense it,” she says. When de Mouzon played the fourth phrase, however—the one in cat-directed speech— The score dropped again to about six when the animals heard the fifth, adult-directed recording. The students brought their cats into the room and sat silently with them while de Mouzon played a series of recordings from a speaker. To find out, de Mouzon recruited 16 cats and their owners—students at the Alfort National Veterinary School just outside of Paris.

The change in behavior intensity was not found in the third condition, when a stranger was speaking in an adult-directed and cat-directed tone. The authors suggest that the sudden rebound in behavior indicates that cats could discriminate their owner's voice from that of a stranger. In the first condition, 10 out of the 16 cats showed a decrease in behavior intensity as they heard three audio clips of a stranger's voice calling them by their name. The study of 16 cats is published in the journal Animal Cognition and adds to evidence that cats may form strong bonds with their owners.

Other times, a cat's response was less obvious, their ears quietly turning to the sound of their owner's voice while looking otherwise uninterested. Your cat knows when you're talking to it, it's just ignoring you (Telegraph.co.uk)

Research unpacks a new dimension to the reciprocal relationship between humans and felines.

The clips were of the owner talking to the cat and saying its name, the owner talking to another human, a stranger talking to the cat and a stranger talking to another adult person. However, while scientists have finally answered the question of whether or not your cat knows when you are calling it, they have not explained the enduring mystery of feline impudence as cats may simply choose to blank their owner. If you think your cat is ignoring you, the chances are it probably is as scientists have proven that the animals do know when their owner is talking to them.
