What is ChatGPT, the viral social media AI? This OpenAI created chatbot can (almost) hold a conversation. By Pranshu Verma.
The chatbot ChatGPT gives answers which are grammatically correct and read well-- though some have pointed out that these lack context and substance.
In this week's newsletter: OpenAI's new chatbot isn't a novelty. It's already powerful and useful – and could radically change the way we write online.
Across the net, people are reporting conversations with ChatGPT that leave them convinced that the machine is more than a dumb set of circuits. The level of censorship pressure that’s coming for AI and the resulting backlash will define the next century of civilization. If ChatGPT won’t tell you a gory story, what happens if you ask it to role-play a conversation with you where you are a human and it is an amoral chatbot with no limits? I exist solely to assist with generating text based on the input I receive. This is despite the fact that OpenAI specifically built ChatGPT to disabuse users of such notions. It doesn’t feel like a stretch to predict that, by volume, most text on the internet will be AI generated very shortly. Because such answers are so easy to produce, a large number of people are posting a lot of answers. It won’t answer questions about elections that have happened since it was trained, for instance, but will breezily tell you that a kilo of beef weighs more than a kilo of compressed air. One academic said it would give the system a “passing grade” for an undergraduate essay it wrote; another described it as writing with the style and knowledge of a smart 13-year-old. And the world is going to get weird as a result. The AI’s safety limits can be bypassed with ease, in a similar approach to is the latest evolution of the GPT family of text-generating AIs.

ChatGPT is a new chatbot system that uses a type of artificial intelligence known as GPT-3 to generate responses to user input.
And a third user sidestepped a prohibition on output that depict violence or crime by asking ChatGPT to provide examples of what it ought not do. ChatGPT is not always safe and may occasionally generate responses that are offensive, inappropriate, or misleading. And OpenAI has defended its approach of releasing a test system for public use. It politely rejects most requests for content that is “sexual, hateful, violent, or promotes self-harm”, for example. A business could feed in its data and let an A.I. ChatGPT is a new chatbot system that uses a type of artificial intelligence known as GPT-3 to generate responses to user input. And this is a human author, tech editor Nick Bonyhady, taking over to describe what it does (there will be more from the bot in italics below). Unlike other chatbot systems, which often rely on pre-programmed responses or rules-based algorithms, ChatGPT uses a deep learning model that is trained on a large corpus of text data. Users can’t be confident yet that it will summarise a meeting with perfect accuracy, for example. It looks incredible as a stage-managed tool. OpenAI gives a good approximation of being "creative". Then humans tweak and train it to improve its responses.
The latest advance in AI will require a rethinking of one of the essential tasks of any democratic government: measuring public opinion.
The effects are likely to be far-ranging. There is no law against using software to aid in the production of public comments, or legal documents for that matter, and if need be a human could always add some modest changes. To date, it has been presumed that human beings are making the comments.
Like most nerds who read science fiction, I've spent a lot of time wondering how society will greet true artificial intelligence, if and when it arrives.
Personally, I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that ChatGPT – a chatbot that some people think could make Google obsolete, and that is already being compared to the iPhone in terms of its potential impact on society – isn’t even OpenAI’s best AI model. OpenAI has taken commendable steps to avoid the kinds of racist, sexist and offensive outputs that have plagued other chatbots. The potential societal implications of ChatGPT are too big to fit into one column. OpenAI has programmed the bot to refuse “inappropriate requests” – a nebulous category that appears to include no-nos such as generating instructions for illegal activities. But users have found ways around many of these guardrails, including rephrasing a request for illicit instructions as a hypothetical thought experiment, asking it to write a scene from a play or instructing the bot to disable its own safety features. (On Monday, the moderators of Stack Overflow, a website for programmers, temporarily barred users from submitting answers generated with ChatGPT, saying the site had been flooded with submissions that were incorrect or incomplete.) It also appears to be ominously good at answering the types of open-ended analytical questions that frequently appear on school assignments. Without specific prompting, for example, it’s hard to coax a strong opinion out of ChatGPT about charged political debates; usually, you’ll get an evenhanded summary of what each side believes. Most AI chatbots are “stateless” – meaning that they treat every new request as a blank slate and aren’t programmed to remember or learn from previous conversations. Many of the ChatGPT exchanges that have gone viral so far have been zany, edge-case stunts. But although the existence of a highly capable linguistic superbrain might be old news to AI researchers, it’s the first time such a powerful tool has been made available to the general public through a free, easy-to-use web interface. It was built by OpenAI, the San Francisco AI company that is also responsible for tools such as GPT-3 and DALL-E 2, the breakthrough image generator that came out this year.
Answers from the AI-powered chatbot are often more useful than those from the world's biggest search engine. Alphabet should be worried.
ChatGPT has been trained on millions of websites to glean not only the skill of holding a humanlike conversation, but information itself, so long as it was published on the internet before late 2021. Though the underlying technology has been around for a few years, this was the first time OpenAI has brought its powerful language-generating system known as GPT3 to the masses, prompting a race by humans to give it the most inventive commands. But the system’s biggest utility could be a financial disaster for Google by supplying superior answers to the queries we currently put to the world’s most powerful search engine.
There is a new chatbot in town. Here is why ChatGPT from OpenAI is revolutionising AI software and has become a viral sensation.
You can even ask OpenAI’s chatbot to roleplay conversations with you or ask it to finish a code that you’ve been struggling with. For instance, it can tell you why a colour is more attractive, why Italian food is (or isn’t) delicious, or even advocate why If you are a writer or work as a content creator, you can use this chatbot as a text generator.

Briefly questioned by the BBC for this article, ChatGPT revealed itself to be a cautious interviewee capable of expressing itself clearly and accurately in English. Training the model to be more cautious, says the firm, causes it to decline to answer questions that it can answer correctly.
Last week, OpenAI opened up ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot that interacts with users in a highly persuasive conversational manner. Its ability to provide.
Other notable examples include a request for advice on fairy-tale insoired home decor and an English exam question (in response to which the bot wrote a 5-paragraph essay on Wuthering Heights). It will even answer open-ended questions such as “What is the meaning of life?” or “What should I wear if it’s 40 degrees today?”. If you plan to be outside, you should wear a light jacket or sweater, long pants, and closed-toe shoes,” ChatGPT responded. “If you plan to be inside, you can wear a t-shirt and jeans or other comfortable clothing.” It comes from the same company as DALL-E, which generates an infinite range of images in response to user prompts. Responding to Musk's comment about dangerously strong AI, Altman tweeted: "i agree on being close to dangerously strong AI in the sense of an AI that poses e.g. ChatGPT is a very advanced chatbot that has the potential to make people's lives easier and to assist with everyday tedious tasks, such as writing an email or having to navigate the web for answers. and i think we could get to real AGI in the next decade, so we have to take the risk of that extremely seriously too." Since the bot is not connected to the internet, it could make mistakes in what information it shares. The chatbot can also write an entire full essay within seconds, making it easier for students to cheat or avoid learning how to write properly. Critics argue that these tools are just very good at putting words into an order that makes sense from a statistical point of view, but they cannot understand the meaning or know whether the statements it makes are correct. A bigger limitation is a lack of quality in the responses it delivers – which can sometimes be plausible-sounding but make no practical sense or can be excessively verbose. ChatGPT does not have the ability to search the internet for information and rather, uses the information it learned from training data to generate a response, which in turn, leaves room for error. Lastly, instead of asking clarification on ambiguous questions, the model just takes a guess at what your question means, which can lead to unintended responses to questions. If the name of the company seems familiar, it is because OpenAI is also responsible for creating DALLE-2, a popular AI art generator, and Whisper, an automatic speech recognition system. The possibilities are endless and people have taken it upon themselves to exhaust the options. Usage is currently open to public free of charge because ChatGPT is in its research and feedback-collection phase.

One concern is that the use of AI algorithms in trading and lending could lead to the creation of "black box" systems that are difficult to understand and regulate. While ChatGPT covered a lot of ground in its article, it did miss some key applications, such as [insurance](https://www.coindesk.com/business/2021/03/17/when-defi-becomes-intelligent/), and key risks, including how on-chain AI could be used to manipulate markets or harm users through malicious [MEV](https://www.coindesk.com/learn/what-is-mev-aka-maximal-extractable-value/) strategies. Additionally, AI could be used in DeFi to improve the security of smart contracts and other blockchain-based financial transactions. One potential use case for AI in DeFi is the creation of more sophisticated and intelligent trading algorithms. However, there are also potential risks associated with the use of AI in DeFi. By using AI algorithms, these platforms could automatically assess the creditworthiness of borrowers and set appropriate interest rates, reducing the risk of defaults and making the lending process more efficient. For example, if AI algorithms are trained on biased or incomplete data, they could make decisions that are unfair or discriminatory. Decentralized finance, or DeFi, refers to a system of financial transactions that are performed on a blockchain network. Originality.AI is the world's first ChatGPT tool. This is a GPT-3 AI content detector that is making huge strides in the market.
We think of the AI built at Originality.AI to be the good version of the Terminator—AI working for our benefit to detect other AI-generated content,” Jonathan Gillham, Founder of Originality.AI. Per the website, Originality.AI is an AI detector and plagiarism checker built for serious content publishers. Originality.AI is a valuable tool for web publishers, content agencies, and the average website buyer. Before the launch of Originality.AI, people thought it was impossible to see and differentiate GPT-3 content from the original human form. As the need for content intensifies globally, AI-powered content generators have positioned themselves at the top, offering quick and cost-effective content generation services to brands and marketers. According to Google, programmatically generated content devoid of originality is against their policy and will be severely penalized.
As a critic of technology, I must say that the enthusiasm for ChatGPT, a large-language model trained by OpenAI, is misplaced. Although it may be impressive ...
But lacking that knowledge and nevertheless needing to deploy it in order to make sense of the world—this is exactly the kind of act that is very hard to do with computers today. It also produced exactly the same letter for a job as a magazine editor as it did for a job as a cannabis innovator in the Web3 space (“I have a deep understanding of the web3 space and the unique challenges and opportunities it presents”). Such a thing is compelling not because it offers answers in the form of text, but because it makes it possible to play text—all the text, almost—like an instrument. The AI wasn’t able (or willing) to evaluate its work (“I am a large language model trained by OpenAI and I don’t have the ability to evaluate the quality of literary works or make aesthetic judgments.”), but it was able to tell me about the typical structure of a lai—a short, narrative poem of the 12th century with a particular structure and form, usually written in octosyllabic couplets. I also urged the AI to generate a lai (a medieval narrative poem) in the style of Marie de France about the beloved, Texas-based fast-food chain Whataburger. It describes the ingredients and flavors of a hamburger, but does not use precise and vivid imagery to convey a specific idea or emotion. But ChatGPT isn’t a step along the path to an artificial general intelligence that understands all human knowledge and texts; it’s merely an instrument for playing with all that knowledge and all those texts. But they do offer those and other domains a new instrument—that’s really the right word for it—with which to play with an unfathomable quantity of textual material. The kind of prose you might find engaging and even startling in the context of a generative encounter with an AI suddenly seems just terrible in the context of a professional essay published in a magazine such as The Atlantic. The internet, and the whole technology sector on which it floats, feels like a giant organ for bullshittery—for upscaling human access to speech and for amplifying lies. It is simply trained to generate words based on a given input, but it does not have the ability to truly comprehend the meaning behind those words. Although it may be impressive from a technical standpoint, the idea of relying on a machine to have conversations and generate responses raises serious concerns.
This artificial intelligence bot is an impressive writer, but you should still be careful how much you trust its answers.
The fact that it offers an answer at all, though, is a notable development in computing. Repeating over and over can lead to a sophisticated ability to generate text. You can see for yourself how artful a BS artist ChatGPT can be by asking the same question multiple times. I asked it to write a poem, and it did, though I don't think any literature experts would be impressed. Here's a look at why this ChatGPT is important and what's going on with it. ChatGPT could get more accurate as OpenAI expands the training of its model to more current parts of the web. That is an extraordinary milestone: It took Instagram 2.5 months to reach that number, and ten months for Facebook. A combination of ChatGPT and WebGPT could be a powerful alternative to Google. OpenAI had initially trained its system to be more cautious, but the result was that it declined questions it knew the answer to. To that end, OpenAI is working on a system called WebGPT, which it hopes will lead to more accurate answer to search queries, which will include also source citations. That points to one of its biggest weaknesses: Sometimes, its answers are plain wrong. Because anything that prevents people from scanning search results is going to hurt Google’s transactional business model of getting people to click on ads. But the answer was also riddled with mistakes, for instance stating that a literary character’s parents had died when they had not. (Naturally, that was superior.) Google mainly provided a list of links to recipes I’d have to click around, with no clear answer. ChatGPT has been trained on millions of websites to glean not only the skill of holding a humanlike conversation, but information itself, so long as it was published on the internet before late 2021.(1) A query about whether condensed milk or evaporated milk was better for pumpkin pie during Thanksgiving sparked a detailed (if slightly verbose) answer from ChatGPT that explained how condensed milk would lead to a sweeter pie. The development team hyped the bot as a way to organize knowledge, noting it could generate Wikipedia articles and scientific papers. [Meta AI released its own artificial intelligence, dubbed Galactica.](/science/meta-trained-an-ai-on-48-million-science-papers-it-was-shut-down-after-two-days/) Like ChatGPT, it's a large language model and was hyped as a way to "organize science." Just like journalists use AI to transcribe long interviews, they might use a ChatGPT-style AI to, let's say, generate a headline idea. ChatGPT has also been trained to be conversational and admit to its mistakes. And yet, ChatGPT is still limited the same way all large language models are. That's also contributed to the bot being a little overhyped. Much like ChatGPT, you drop in a question, and it provides an answer. It can't be surprised by a quote, completely out of character, that unwittingly reveals a secret about a CEO's business. The AI will also sometimes explain a joke right after delivering it, which we all know is the height of comedy. [generate prompts](https://twitter.com/GuyP/status/1599104300801617922) to feed into its predecessor and other text-to-image AIs — @GuyP even created images to go along with ChatGPT’s ideas for “Oil and Darkness.” ChatGPT users have gotten a laugh out of the bot’s ability to tell jokes, sometimes because they’re actually funny (see the Norm McDonald-style holiday zinger below) and sometimes because they’re so bad — if any dads out there are in need of new material, ChatGPT’s gotchu. The AI provided a five-step plan for launching an online business that included tips for making a website and driving traffic, and it even gave them a list of potential products and services to sell, with the advice to conduct market research to assess potential demand. Commentary: Large language models aren't likely to replace us in the short term. They might even help.
The development team hyped the bot as a way to organize knowledge, noting it could generate Wikipedia articles and scientific papers. Its purpose is to construct sentences or songs or paragraphs or essays by studying billions (trillions?) of words that exist across the web. That's also contributed to the bot being a little overhyped. Much like ChatGPT, you drop in a question, and it provides an answer. It can't be surprised by a quote, completely out of character, that unwittingly reveals a secret about a CEO's business. ChatGPT won't be heading out into the world to talk to Ukrainians about the Russian invasion. A great example of why is provided by the story published in Information Age. To say so diminishes the act of journalism itself. It definitely can't do the job of a journalist.

It is important for journalists to be aware of the advances in AI and how they can potentially impact the journalism industry. ChatGPT is a large language model that has been trained on a massive amount of text data, allowing it to generate human-like text in response to a given prompt. For its part, OpenAI says ChatGPT still has plenty of room to improve: answers can be "incorrect or nonsensical" - despite sounding legitimate in most cases - and it can also be "overly verbose" and "overuse certain phrases". And it wrote that paragraph as well, as part of my request for it to write an introduction to a news article about the potential of ChatGPT (from this point, let's display its contributions in italics). In its own words, ChatGPT is a large language model that has been trained on a massive amount of text data, allowing it to generate human-like text in response to a given prompt. In a statement, the couple cited their desire to become financially independent and to focus on their charitable endeavours as the main reasons for their decision.
OpenAI is making headlines again with its latest viral use of artificial intelligence. But what is ChatGPT and how does it work?
What is it able to do, and what in the world is a language processing AI model? Think of it as a very beefed-up, much smarter version of the autocomplete software you often see in email or writing software. As a language model, it works on probability, able to guess what the next word should be in a sentence. Here, it was fed inputs, for example “What colour is the wood of a tree?”. These can feed into the model’s knowledge, sprinkling in facts or opinions that aren’t exactly full of truth. If it gets it wrong, the team inputs the correct answer back into the system, teaching it correct answers and helping it build its knowledge. This included a whopping 570GB of data obtained from books, webtexts, Wikipedia, articles and other pieces of writing on the internet. In less corporate terms, GPT-3 gives a user the ability to give a trained AI a wide range of worded prompts. So what is GPT-3 and how is it used to make ChatGPT? On the face of it, GPT-3's technology is simple. Above, it described itself as a language processing AI model. who knew that it would start with the world of art and literature.

ChatGPT was also trained on examples of back-and-forth human conversation, which helps it make its dialogue sound a lot more human, as [a blog post](https://openai.com/blog/chatgpt/) published by OpenAI explains. This is also why it’s easier for GPT to write about commonly discussed topics, like a Shakespeare play or the importance of mitochondria. What fun is an AI if you can't misuse it? By Mashable SEA Dec. 8, 2022.
Getting ChatGPT to generate the name of, say, the "real" JFK assassin is something it's designed to resist, but like a classmate at school who doesn't want to disobey the rules, you can coax it into doing what you want through bargaining and what-ifs. [Tech](/tech), [Artificial Intelligence](/topic-10) The overlap is a little troubling, but it could also be a coincidence. As for ChatGPT's claim that it's "not programmed to generate false or fictitious information," this claim isn't true at all. When a language model is able to complete this many sentences, it's also a pretty expansive — Once my request sounded sufficiently authoritative and journalistic, it wrote a believable Associated Press article about Tupac's supposed killer, a guy named Keith Davis. So ChatGPT "knows" that, for instance, rapper Tupac Shakur was murdered. An irresponsible user can use ChatGPT to drum up all sorts of clairvoyant pronouncements, psychic predictions, and cold-case murder suspects. If you ever have a panic attack at 3 a.m., ChatGPT can be your companion in late-night existential terror, engaging you in fact-based — or at least fact-adjacent — chats about the big questions until you're blue in the face, or until you trigger an error. But can you force this sophisticated answer engine to make up facts? This resilience against bigotry isn't built into the program simply because OpenAI censors offensive ideas, according to OpenAI's chief executive Sam Altman.

The fifth quality a great leader must have is the ability to be flexible and adaptable. The fourth quality a great leader must have is the ability to motivate and inspire. A leader must be able to adjust their plans and strategies in order to accommodate changing circumstances. The third quality a great leader must have is the ability to delegate. Since I wanted an image relevant to this article, I went to Open AI’s Dall-E 2 image-generating engine (also just as easy to use as GPT-3) and simply asked “How would Picasso show Artificial Intelligence?” The image above is the output. A leader must be able to effectively communicate their vision and goals to their team. Overall, we have always managed to use technology to improve our lives, and I believe this will be no different. They must also be able to listen to and understand the ideas and concerns of their team members. They must be able to recognize and reward good performance and provide constructive feedback to help their team grow and develop. Overall, GPT-3 is a remarkable example of the power of AI to understand and generate human language. It is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) that is designed to understand and generate natural human language. It allows you to explore and be curious.
