Lookism Review: Satisfactory Adaptation That Needs More Fuel and ... (Leisurebyte)

All in all, it’s a good adaptation, but as an original piece, it lacks some pace and allure despite its heartfelt trajectory, maybe the inclusion of a few more episodes could’ve helped fix the issue, but there is no telling that now. Much like the source text, the season, since it follows only the initial chapters of the webtoon, is primarily presented as a slice-of-life animated series, packed in with quite a few fight scenes due to its focus on instances related to bullying. One of the major highlights of the series has to be its intro theme, Like That, recorded by Kpop sensation Ateez, which blends well with the opening sequence introducing all the characters of the story, with some name changes like the webtoon’s protagonist, Daniel becomes Park Hyeong-seok in the series. Character designs are also in line with the art style of the webtoon, with slight evolutions that make the characters seems even more attractive than usual in some cases. Park Hyeong-seok has to live with a similar situation and endure being bullied at his school at the hands of those who believe themselves to be superior, and believe their attractive visages as enough justification for their vile behaviours. Lookism, initially meant to premiere in November, made its way to Netflix, as the Korean animated adaptation of the webtoon created by Taejun Pak, on December 8, 2022 with 8 episodes, each with a duration between 22-30 minutes.

'Lookism' Ending, Explained: How Does Park Hyeong-Seok Get ... (Digital Mafia Talkies)

The South Korean anime drama series "Lookism" is a direct commentary on societal norms of appearance and how they affect young individuals.

The way Park’s attractive self bids goodbye to his original body, in the end, might be seen with some hint of finality, but this suave body would surely be back if “Lookism” is renewed for a second season. After his performance, Jin is confident that he has won, and he even hits Deok-Hwa backstage, to which Park is about to respond with violence. While he has always been subjected to ridicule and bullying due to his original body, he faces prejudice for his appearance in the attractive form, too, just on the other side of the spectrum. There comes the point when Deok-Hwa hears Park sing in the school and asks the attractive boy to be his partner at the upcoming music festival, where Jin and his singing partner are deemed to be the eventual winners. This boy, Lee Jin-Seong, is also a classmate of Park’s, and he has a fight with the boy early on when Park starts to grab the attention of all his classmates. At the end of this meeting, the mother gives the boy some money to give to her son, but Basco feels this to be some extortion on the attractive Park’s part. The convenience store owner readily wants to give the job to the attractive Park but is very reluctant to allow the original Park to do the same job. He meets with the first of these boys, Ji-ho when he himself is bullied along with the boy in his original body. This boy, Deok-Hwa, is introduced a bit later on, as he happens to have great talent in writing and composing music but is constantly bullied by Jin Ho-bin, the popular and attractive student of the class, and his followers. Park does not seem to take much time getting used to the whole body-swapping charade, and he starts to attend his new school in his new, attractive body. She finally agrees to get her son transferred to a new school, and the boy is delighted at this new beginning. Despite this change in how he is perceived, Park does not give in to the selfish way of changing his true self, which would have been easier too.

Lookism season 1 ending explained. The article contains spoilers for the Korean Netflix anime Lookism ending.

He also has a little more resilience than Hyeong-Seok seemed to have in his original form, and he continues to express himself and his experiences through his songwriting. But the real thematic payoff comes when a record label representative wants to give Hyeong-Seok his card but is refused since Hyeong-Seok doesn’t want to consider an offer that doesn’t include his friend Duk-Hwa. One of the most essential relationships of this first season is between Hyeong-Seok and Duk-Hwa, an aspiring rapper who is brutally bullied for many of the same reasons as Hyeong-Seok was – he’s from a poor family, he’s short and piggish, and so on, and so forth. The show doesn’t spend too much time on the logistics of how all this works, and it also doesn’t offer up much of a justification for the body swap in the first place. In doing so he not only has a net benefit on the student body overall, but he also continues to be rewarded himself. He befriends the quieter kids, some of whom are picked on as he was, and helps them to feel better about themselves.

The team is currently engaged in other endeavours, but the Lookism season 2 trailer is scheduled for release sometime in the autumn of 2023, assuming Netflix decides to renew its original creation. Due to the high standard set by this original work of fiction, we are confident that a sequel will be released in the near future. In the event that Lookism is quickly renewed, season 2 could premiere by the end of 2023. The second season of Lookism is expected to feature eight episodes, though Netflix has not yet confirmed this. A second season of the Korean Netflix anime Lookism is possibly being planned, as well as the show’s renewal or cancellation. Fans will undoubtedly be looking ahead, and since there is still a lot of the original story to adapt, we figured we might as well lay out what we know so far.

Stream It Or Skip It: 'Lookism' on Netflix, An Adaptation of a ... (Decider)

Studio Mir's animation has taken a fairly decent-looking webtoon and transformed it into cheap-looking schlock.

Lookism may be a webtoon instead of a novel, but its animated version leaves out too many details to be as much of an impactful experience as the original story. Further, the first episode won’t do much to hook you, and you’ll likely be left scrambling to get caught up on the webtoon instead of committing to the eight episodes available on Netflix. Most Pilot-y Line: “This is where I’ll start over,” a confident Hyeong-seok declares as he makes his way toward the small apartment his mother arranges for him in another city. You can feel the pain in her heart when she sees her son being bullied and hurt at school, and it cuts like a knife. He’s been treated like garbage for so long it seems like it’s manifested in his personality too, and it’s quite embarrassing to see him treat his mother the way he does instead of trying to fight back and solving his own problems. What’s more, Studio Mir’s animation has taken a fairly decent-looking webtoon and transformed it into cheap-looking schlock that’s reminiscent of some of the lazy American-flavored anime that’s emblazoned across the covers of “how to draw” books. The script is too milquetoast when it needs to be forceful, and too aggressive when it needs to tone things down. So when he wakes up and he’s in a tall, thin teen’s body, he’s shocked in ways it’s difficult to understand. He’s bullied to the point of tears every single day, treated like a pig, and beaten up if he doesn’t cooperate with his bullies’ demands. And unfortunately, judging others by their looks is a frustrating fact of life that many of us have to deal with. A young man stares at himself in the mirror incredulously, as if he can’t believe what it is he’s looking at. Can he find a way to be accepted by his peers when he’s living a life that isn’t truly his?

Will there be a Lookism season 2? (Ready Steady Cut)

Will there be a Lookism season 2? We discuss whether the Korean Netflix anime series has been renewed or canceled.

The only problem is that his original body still lays beside him—and when one body falls asleep, he awakens in the other. And then there’s the artistic justification. The material and fanbase are both already there, so, why not? With timely social commentary, a built-in fanbase from the webtoon, and mass-market appeal give its dual status as both k-drama and anime, Lookism is virtually guaranteed to be a hit. Curious fans will likely stick with the anime version because of its faithfulness. Adapted from the popular webtoon by Park Tae-joon, its story revolves around a young boy who is badly bullied because of his appearance and discovers, quite suddenly, that he’s able to shift his consciousness into a much taller, more athletic, and more handsome counterpart.
