Erik Ten Hag Says Cristiano Ronaldo Had To Leave Manchester ... (Forbes)

The Manchester United manager has said the player's recent interview gave the club no choice.

“I want to go to the future. I would have preferred it to be in a different way because I wanted to work with him. They are the decisions I have to make. We want to be unified." Ten Hag dropped Ronaldo to the substitutes bench for the majority of United’s games in the Premier League this season. "I like to work with world-class players because I know they can make a difference to help you achieve your objectives,” he said. "I wanted him to stay from the first moment until now. I did everything to bring him into the team because I value his quality. He came in and said ‘I will tell you in seven days if I want to stay’. Then he came back and said ‘I want to stay’. That is the only way the club can be successful and operate.” "The interview I think, as a club, you can’t accept,” Ten Hag said on Friday.

Real Betis host Manchester United at the Estadio Benito Villamarin in Seville, Spain on Saturday, December 10. Of the 14 players contracted to United who departed for Qatar in November, one — Cristiano Ronaldo — has since left the club entirely, while six are on their way back to Manchester following elimination. 90 mins from kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News' live coverage of today's match between Manchester United and Real Betis. They are, however, yet to sell out the stadium with a record crowd of 57,123 when Betis played Valencia in 2019. It was a great strike from outside the box and it may have taken a deflection to put it onto the post but United get away with one there. The United centre-back tried to hobble off the pitch but the stretcher has now been called for and he will be substituted. United still yet to test the Betis goalkeeper. United have looked slow in their build-up play and the home side are comfortable. 6th min: Williams is called into action at the back as Betis attack down the left. United go up the other end and Elanga drags a shot well wide. The hosts had the best chance when they struck the post early on and Martial's dipping effort is the closest United have come, however, neither side has troubled the goalkeepers. 39th min: Martial tees up McTominay on the edge of the box but he slices an effort as he is chopped down.

Manchester United slipped to a narrow friendly defeat against Real Betis as the Reds' winter training week ended at the Estadio Benito Villamarin in Seville ...

Betis were inches away from an opener at the midway point in the first half, as Paul Akouokou's shot through a forest of bodies clipped the left-hand post, after promising work by Luiz Henrique on the right flank. Victor Lindelof and Scott McTominay were the only United starters who played the full 90 minutes of what was effectively another training exercise. It was a warning sign for United and regrettably it wasn't heeded sufficiently before Fekir received Iglesias's clever pass into the penalty area and fired home in the 49th minute. The young Reds in question included forwards Noam Emeran and Joe Hugill but clearcut chances still proved elusive as Betis saw out their 1-0 win. The United left-back also hauled down the rapid Luiz Felipe and that challenge might have earned him a yellow card in a competitive game. Teden Mengi's second start of the trip was sadly cut short just part the quarter-hour mark when he suffered an injury.

Premier League club defeated 1-0 at Estadio Benito Villamarin in mid-season friendly.

Started on the left – as opposed to on the right in Cadiz. And again on 69 from a Miranda header. Fine saves on 64 and 65 as Betis pushed for a second. A positive experience for United’s young players including the Mancunian. Challenged well, but up against a top side controlling the game. Lively one or twice on the right in front of 250 away fans. Better in Cadiz on Wednesday. Shot went wide of the far post on 30. Lost the ball in midfield, leading to Betis attacking and hitting the post on 20. Carried on going in hard on opponents. The most experienced defender, he organised the defence well and instructed Menghi and then Murray, but the defence was split by the experienced Beticos. Much better than against Cadiz, stemming the threat of the experienced Betis attack.

Man United are light on recognised strikers following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo last month and Ten Hag was asked about Cody Gakpo.

And now we have to stop the process and we get him and he gets himself in a better position so that he’s fit and available. “I think he is [happy] but he was so disappointed that he had bad luck with the injury. In his analysis of the United squad, Ten Hag felt they had too many right-footed left wingers. For our team, he’s a really important player and we need that profile. When Gakpo, who scored three times for the Netherlands at the World Cup, was mentioned to Ten Hag, he replied: “I cannot give comments on specific players. We are doing research on every opportunity and we do everything we can if that opportunity is there to contract them.”

In fact, United’s two clearest opportunities fell to Scott McTominay who blasted both high and wide. Just like the officials in Cadiz, however, referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero seemed reluctant to get his cards out. What we won’t get, of course, are the wholesale changes during these encounters that reduce them to little more than exhibition games. After losing to Cadiz 4-2 on Wednesday night, United went down to the sixth-placed side in La Liga managed by former Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini. Heaton, to be fair, made a number of saves after that and looked a safer pair of hands than Martin Dubravka in the defeat to Cadiz. United will have a few of their World Cup players back by then – Christian Eriksen returns to the club on Monday, and those knocked out of the quarter-finals will only be a week behind – but a number of those on duty in Spain will also face Burnley.

Betis v United: The talking points (Manchester United)

An unfortunate injury and an eye-catching midfield performance are topics of conversation in Seville.

United's substitute keeper was unable to do anything about the winning goal, but he did pull off a couple of excellent saves in the second half to prevent Betis from extending their lead, one with his feet and the other being a finger-tip stop to foil a far-post header. He also executed a delightful piece of skill in the 69th minute to outfox Betis defender Martin Montoya on the touchline and continue the play infield. It wasn't a vintage United performance by any means, but one player who did fare well - and for the second time in four days - was Zidane Iqbal. The Betis no.8 took one touch before passing the ball nonchalantly into the corner of the goal and Tom Heaton’s second act after replacing De Gea - he had to deny Henrique 15 seconds into the half - was to retrieve it out of the net. In his pre-match interview with MUTV, Ten Hag was clear that he wanted a better performance from his players than in Cadiz, both in and out of possession. The stadium was only around a quarter full, but our travelling fans high up in the third tier made their presence clear by proudly displaying the usual red, white and black banners reading ‘Manchester born and bred’, ‘Bring on United’ and the like, as well as a couple of Argentina flags.

Manchester City v Manchester United: Women's Super League – live (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: Will Manchester United finally get their first WSL win over their rivals? Join Tom Bassam to find out.

9 min: United clear the initial corner but as the ball is hoisted back in it all gets a bit messy on the edge of box. The Jamaican striker gets to the byline on the City right and pulls the ball back for Chloe Kelly, but Hannah Blundell nips in at the key moment. City have been WSL force for far longer than United, but this season there is a growing sense that the red side side of Manchester can truly challenge. 4 min: There is a smart turn from Toone just inside the City half but her through ball towards Russo lacks precision an is easily cut out. This time she drives forward to the edge of the City box but her shot is a poor one and dribbles wide. Toone cuts the ball back to her teammate from the left-hand side of the box, Galton’s shot gets a handy deflection to beat Roebuck. It is a lovely goal for United as Toone combines with Galton to drive into the City box. Robeuck flaps at the resulting ball into the box but City are able to clear. 62 min: It is all United after that City bolt from the blue. 64 min: Moment of danger for United as Kelly’s cross drifts over the outstretched arm of Earps and just wide. The striker shifts the ball between her feet to make room for a shot which is just wide Roebuck’s right post. Again the United nips in ahead of the forward on halfway as PA announced a record WSL attendance at the Etihad, more than 44,000 fans in today.

Man City Women vs Manchester United - live WSL updates (Manchester Evening News)

Manchester City Women welcome Man Utd to the Etihad on Sunday and we'll bring you live updates from the WSL derby.

Laia Aleixandri - Fantastic calm footwork to turn out of trouble in the United box to create a chance for Kelly early on. Despite being a maestro in long balls she kept it short and snappy in the first half, a genuine solid performance at the back. Defensively she was strong as always with a top-notch performance but also in attack she was happy to drive into the City box shoulder to shoulder with towering Ouahabi. Came out to collect a high ball in the second half but missed it. Ellie Roebuck - She collected the ball well but was beaten by the big deflection for the goal. A confident performance that she grew into as the game progressed. And nicked the ball from Toone's feet in her area minutes later. Mary Earps - Her communication heard over a 44,000 crowd instilled confidence in her back four, demanding Blundell “stay on the ball” early into the game. Kerstin Casparij - Just quality on City’s right flank, she wasn’t afraid to get involved with Kelly in attack. Shaw has been prolific again for the Blues after enjoying an outstanding first season at the club last term. Hannah Blundell - Incredible first-half performance against Kelly and Casparij, she was involved at both ends. She couldn’t do anything from Coombs’ free header as it bounced into the back of her net.

Marc Skinner's side took the lead in the first half, after excellent work from Leah Galton and Ella Toone down the left saw the former power the ball home.

The Reds came close to restoring our lead moments later, but Hayley Ladd's looping effort was caught with ease by Roebuck. But we couldn't turn our early dominance into an insurance goal before the hosts levelled the score. Mary Earps was forced into a big clearance early on, punching Alex Greenwood's corner off the line before our backline cleared it. Just two minutes later, however, Skinner's side took the lead through a wonderfully crafted goal. The match deserved more goals than it got, with both sides showing much attacking vigour and commitment to go for all three points. Both sides saw a handful of chances go begging as the game entered stoppage time, and United saw a penalty appeal waved away after the ball appeared to come off Greenwood's hand in the box.

Manchester United should be WSL title contenders… but they need ... (The Athletic)

A 1-1 draw with Manchester City represented a missed opportunity to make a statement in the title race.

But in the second half, old cracks began to show and a United defence that has been solid for large parts of the season, not even conceding a goal in the first five games, began to falter. We wanted to and needed to win that game. This was a mentality change for our group — they’ve come off at the end and they’re very disappointed that they haven’t taken the win especially in the nature they conceded the goal. There were lots of positives, and the way they nullified Lauren Hemp, who is just returning from injury, will have given Mark Skinner cause for satisfaction. City’s defence appeared fragile and, despite the presence of a club-record crowd of over 40,000 fans at the Etihad, the atmosphere felt more akin to a Test match at Lord’s — a quiet hubbub of chatter but little energy. Laura Coombs had time and space to head home and secure a point for City.
