DOHA, Dec 11 (Reuters) - Argentina play Croatia in the semi-finals of the World Cup on Tuesday. When: Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2200 local (1900 GMT/1400ET).
* Croatia are in their second consecutive World Cup semi-final after losing to France in the 2018 World Cup final. The World Cup trophy is the only major title missing from his collection, which includes every big club and national team title. It was also their first shot on goal in that game.
Holders France take on first-time semi-finalists Morocco for a place in the final.
His shot was deflected but it fell perfectly at the back post to Kolo Muani, the Eintracht Frankfurt striker who had been on the pitch just 44 seconds, to score the second. Mbappe went to the centre and it was him who created the goal, bursting past one defender and immediately drawing three into him. Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate came in for Upamecano and did well enough to keep his place for the final. He was unable to get a clean shot off but the deflected hit fell high and awkward at the back post for Hernandez and he finished beautifully, first time, with his left foot. When Morocco did find a way through the France press they were dangerous. He made the big substitute calls right bringing on Marcus Thuram and Kolo Muani, both influential in the latter stages of the game. For Morocco, this had been an exceptional effort from the likes of Amrabat, Hakim Ziyech and Sofiane Boufal. Four years earlier, he scored twice in the second half of France’s 4-3 win over Argentina in the second round of the 2018 World Cup finals. Their plans to sit in that 4-5-1 formation and wait for their opportunities were turned upside down by the fifth minute French goal, brilliantly taken by the full-back Theo Hernandez. By the second half Morocco were obliged to go on the front foot. [Sunday’s final](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-cup/2022/12/14/when-qatar-world-cup-2022-final-match-date-kick-off/) between France and Argentina will also be viewed as Mbappe against Lionel Messi, and what it means for their respective places in the great canon of the game. Mbappe was rarely allowed to break free, yet in the closing stages it was he who scattered the pieces in the Morocco area to create France’s second.

The first face-off between Argentina and Croatia was at the FIFA World Cup in 1998. So far, only Germany has reached the World Cup 8 times. Lionel Messi scored his first goal in FIFA World Cup 2022 against Saudi Arabia. Argentine won 1-0 in 1998, before Croatia's 3-0 win in Russia. On the other hand, Croatia collected just three corners through the 120 minutes of their quarterfinal. France will face Morocco the next day (Thursday, December 15).

As he was challenged the ball rebounded back to him from Josip Juranovic and then from an off-balance Borna Sosa and Alvarez just kept going and going and poked it home. Alvarez side-footed past Livakovic and it was game over. He had already been feeling the back of his leg and was moving less easily. As he held off Gvardiol, Messi was able to get his shot away with Livakovic parrying. Despite Luka Modric’s claim to be the best midfielder of his generation it felt like the narrative was set to be Messi’s and so it proved. If there had been metal bars around the pitch it could not have been more cagey and it felt like it would take something surprising to break the deadlock. Messi will need Alvarez with the Manchester City striker not only scoring twice, and earning the penalty, but doing all of his running for him. And running and running. It was pure genius from the genius. Quite why Messi ended up playing the whole game when he could barely run was surprising. This tournament, so rich in its football, its drama, its upsets, and so controversial in so many other ways, has the final act it so craved. In his fifth attempt it really is his final chance.
