Warner Bros. seems to be completely reversing its strategy when it comes to its DC Comics properties, starting with a big cancellation.

Wonder Woman 3 won't see the light of day, but it would be absurd to think that any of these characters are going on the bench for long. Despite no longer portraying one of the biggest names in the franchise, he won't be bailing out of the entire DCEU. It's fair to assume that one good film and one bad film would result in a canceled third film, but 1984's disastrous reception isn't the only thing that led to that decision. A lot of people thought Ben Affleck was a terrible choice for Batman, but he was certainly a huge star. Instead, he's supposedly hanging up his trident to take on the role of Lobo in an upcoming film. However, it seems clear that there will be some casualties in his heroic attempt to right the ship. The third Wonder Woman film has been canned at Warner Bros., presumably under the orders of new DCEU head James Gunn.

There has been no confirmation as to why Wonder Woman 3 was canceled or who it was canceled by. According to alleged reports, James Gunn was not at all involved in the decision to cancel Wonder Woman 3. The removal of Wonder Woman 3 from the DCU could be one of the solutions to the problem (one which the people clearly hate). The people clearly stand with another Wonder Woman movie and feel like giving director Patty Jenkins another chance at redemption. The sequel, Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), however, received disappointing reviews. Bad news for DC fans as Wonder Woman 3 is canceled from development by the alleged order of James Gunn.

Jenkins clearly had a lot of love for the character of Wonder Woman, and it was delightful to see her work the character into vastly different stories. Yet Jenkins was the sole director of both Wonder Woman films, and her decision to feature two opposite tones speaks to both her strengths as a filmmaker to not stick to just one style, but also the versatility of the character. Wonder Woman is a love letter to characters with rich comic book history by mixing various elements together to make a unique but classic version of the story. It is fitting that 2017's Wonder Woman does for the character what 1978's Superman: The Move and 1989's Batman did for their respective characters. Both Wonder Woman movies grossed US$992.54 million (S$1.35 billion) and was responsible in the increased interest from female moviegoers. Much of DC’s future remains in flux and all eyes are on Gunn and Safran now. Jenkins wrote and directed the first two Wonder Woman movies.
