'Avatar,' Sobriety and Hollywood Clashes: How Sam Worthington ... (Variety)

Sam Worthington details his long road to returning as a leading man in "Avatar: The Way of Water."

“There’s a lot of stuff going on in that water that you don’t really discuss,” Worthington says. Worthington says the whole experience of making “Avatar: The Way of Water” encapsulates everything he loves about moviemaking. “I looked at it as Perseus was half a god and half a dad, and he had decided that he didn’t want the god part anymore,” Worthington says. I’m sure he’s been held down in the washing machine and had to hold his breath for a minute until he could get out of turbulence,’” Cameron says. Kate Winslet, a new addition to the franchise, was able to hold her breath for seven minutes, Saldana managed five, and Worthington jokes he made it “15 seconds.” When he auditioned for “Avatar,” the project was so shrouded in secrecy that Worthington had no idea what the movie was about or who was directing it. “I could have handled things differently, instead of showing up on the first day with a big belly,” he says. In the immediate aftermath of “Avatar,” Worthington found himself plucked from obscurity and anointed by Hollywood as the Next Big Thing. In the 13 years between installments in the “Avatar” franchise, he got married and had three sons. Just as the first “Avatar” pushed beyond the boundaries of filmmaking to create something revolutionary, its sequel also hopes to mark a step forward in the medium. The $350 million sequel is one of the biggest and riskiest bets in Hollywood — Cameron has indicated it needs to be “the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history” just to break even — and it arrives at a time when movie theaters are in a major slump. “I thought it was normal.” He adds, “I didn’t like who I was.

The pair spoke to Radio Times magazine about reprising their roles as Jake Sully and Neytiri.

Much like Worthington, motherhood has given her a profound sense of empathy for the plight of Jake and Neyteri, who are caught between fighting for their clan and protecting their family. Avatar 2's Sam Worthington Recalls Failed James Bond Audition (Screen Rant)

Avatar: The Way of Water star Sam Worthington, who plays Jake Sully, recalls his failed audition for James Bond before Daniel Craig was cast.

Had Worthington starred in Casino Royale instead, it's likely that the trajectory of the franchise would have ended up being very different, and Skyfall, as it exists today, wouldn't have been made. Casino Royale introduced a more ruthless and cold version of 007, but the spy also returns to his more debonair roots in later installments, both qualities that Craig is able to effectively capture. [Variety](https://variety.com/2022/film/news/sam-worthington-james-bond-green-lantern-1235462142/) ahead of the worldwide release of [James Cameron's sequel Avatar: The Way of Water](https://screenrant.com/avatar-way-water-james-cameron-sequels-better/), Worthington shares what his own audition for Bond was like. While Worthington may have lost out on the role of Bond, the failed audition meant that he could then go on to star in Avatar in 2009, which would become the highest-grossing movie of all time. This means that he also wouldn't be appearing in the upcoming sequel, which has already earned glowing reviews and has been said to surpass the original film. A number of actors were said to be in consideration for the role at the time, including Henry Cavill, who is still constantly fan-cast in the role, Clive Owen, Rupert Friend, and Dougray Scott, among others.

Sam Worthington is probably best known for his role as Jake in the "Avatar" movies, but fans may not know he almost landed this infamous DC hero role.

And we definitely would not have that "Deadpool 2" gag to enjoy, so it's probably settled that everything came out for the best in the end. But there is one example of a part he missed out on that he can, by most accounts, consider himself fortunate not to be involved in — and it happens to be one of the most infamous DC Comics adaptations ever made. Sam Worthington rose to mainstream fame when he played Jake Sully in James Cameron's 2009 film "Avatar," but he hasn't exactly parlayed his leading role in what was once the most commercially successful film of all time into a household name with leading man status.
