Thankfully, we didn't get a Barbie movie until the super-talented Greta Gerwig came along. It's shocking that we didn't get an officially licensed Barbie movie decades ago. Then she falls in love with a human, coincidentally named Ken, and learns what it means to be alive before she tearfully becomes a toy again.
The trailer, in an amusing homage to 2001: Space Odyssey, then pans up to a monolithic sized Margot Robbie, dressed as one of the earlier Barbie models. (That's ...

The Birds of Preystar, 32, donned a black-and-white one-piece bathing suit and white sunglasses, which pays homage to the very first Barbie doll, released in March 1959, who sported a similar swimwear getup. “But the dolls were always and forever baby dolls until [Barbie].”
Here's all we know about writer and director Greta Gerwig's upcoming Barbie movie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
‘It comes with a lot of baggage!’ the Wolf of Wall Street star told British Vogue in June 2021. Lots and lots of pink. ‘And a lot of nostalgic connections. We do know there’ll be rollerblades and pink. But with that comes a lot of exciting ways to attack it. The first teaser for the upcoming Barbie movie has finally dropped, but could've highly benefited from the inclusion of Aqua's iconic 1990's song.
For years, the toy has been well-loved but slightly controversial too, and "Barbie Girl" targets every nasty stereotype associated with Barbie and the way she's presented. While satirizing American commercialism and the sexualization of feminine people in the media, both "Barbie Girl" and Greta Gerwig's film spit in the face of some of the harmful stereotypes associated with Mattel’s Barbie toy. The 1997 hit song, "Barbie Girl" has drilled itself into society as a hauntingly catchy parody of the Barbie doll and everything associated with her. Despite the doll and Barbie as a brand being a seemingly innocent symbol of childhood for many, the product is often associated with problematic stereotypes. The beloved blonde doll, Barbie, is associated with a lot of media, including Aqua's earworm of a hit from 1997, "Barbie Girl." Even if "Barbie Girl" isn't officially associated with the movie, there's no questioning how beneficial the song could be for the film's marketing.
Fans of the hit Aqua song are disappointed that the hit "Barbie Girl" song will not be part of the upcoming “Barbie” moving, scheduled in 2023.
Whether or not "Barbie Girl" will make a surprise appearance in the film remains to be seen, but either way, fans can't wait to see what this new adventure has in store for their favorite blonde bombshell. With Margot Robbie at the helm, Greta Gerwig's Barbie is sure to be a hit, even without the inclusion of Aqua's beloved song. While "Barbie Girl" satirizes American commercialism and the sexualization of feminine people in the media, the film looks like it will do the same, poking fun at the harmful stereotypes often associated with the Barbie toy. But even without the inclusion of "Barbie Girl," there's no denying that the song could have been a huge asset to the film's marketing. However, in recent years, the Barbie brand has made an effort to become a more positive influence on kids, and it seems that Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie is following in this feminist vein. The song's lyrics, were seen as a nod to Barbie's reputation as a sexualized and unrealistic role model.
Whatever else happens with the film, you can't deny it's got a heck of a trailer.
And hey, now it makes you curious about what the rest of the marketing campaign for this thing’s gonna be, particularly when it gets to Super Bowl weekend and the Oscars. Given that no one really knew what the heck this Barbie movie was going to be, much less from the director of Little Women, its trailer is definitely eye-catching. [Margot Robbie](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/USobvYI4l70) standing tall over a bunch of young girls. But now that the [first look](https://gizmodo.com/barbie-movie-trailer-margot-robbie-ryan-gosling-kubrick-1849901767) at Greta Gerwig’s take on the [popular Mattel toy](https://gizmodo.com/20-weird-insane-and-extremely-disturbing-barbie-dolls-1682800231) is out, those concerns seem to have been largely vanished, as the trailer playing in front of Avatar: The Way of Water looks...actually pretty rad? Much of that can be owed to the trailer’s first half, which is an homage to the late Stanley Kubrick’s 1986 film 2001: A Space Odyssey. It caught enough attention on social media that older filmgoers did [side-by-side comparisons](https://twitter.com/MatthewGaydos/status/1603810520003317761) that have also quickly gained online traction during the weekend.
