The Little Women writer-director has re-teamed with Noah Baumbach to write a new take on the much-loved doll character.
The film is set to be followed by another Mattel adaptation, a take on Polly Pocket written and directed by Lena Dunham and starring Lily Collins. Barbie had originally been in the works in 2015 with Oscar-winning Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody before it moved to Amy Schumer in 2016 who was set to star and co-write. She added that she hoped the film will “provoke a thoughtful conversation”.

Barbie teaser: Actor Margot Robbie is the iconic and cheeky American doll in Greta Gerwig's take on the popular toy. Watch. | Hollywood.
Several animated versions of Barbie have released on video and television before. Margot can be seen surveying the different 'dollhouses' in Barbie land, all of which are pink or purple in their colour schemes. Simu is dressed in all black while dancing, while Issa Rae is spotted in a pink jumpsuit. The music from Stanley Kubrick's 2001 A Space Odyssey soundtrack ushers in the entrance of the giant doll, Barbie, who is definitely not a baby. [Greta Gerwig](https://www.hindustantimes.com/topic/greta-gerwig)'s Barbie, released on Friday, introduces [Margot Robbie](https://www.hindustantimes.com/topic/margot-robbie) as the popular and iconic American doll. The little girls are awestruck around her and throw their own baby dolls away, some even smashing theirs to pieces. Dressed in a black-and-white striped swimsuit and black high heels, this new doll is sexy. But the dolls were always and forever baby dolls. All the leaked set photos in the world could never have prepared us for Margot Robbie as Barbie through a Stanley Kubrick lens.
I only hope this particular pretty movie will comment on who gets to be pretty, and how Barbie herself left a lot of little girls feeling very un-glamourous indeed. [Ken (Ryan Gosling)](https://jezebel.com/eva-mendes-might-be-a-little-too-supportive-of-her-husb-1849123829) as a lacrosse bro aside—it does give us a cinematic CT scan of Gerwig’s brain and her approach to mythologizing the distinctly curvy ditz who enchanted as many young girls as she gave body dysmorphia to. There’s a feminist lens in Gerwig’s toolbox, and I’m hoping she employs it in an irreverent, tongue-in-cheek fashion. And say goodbye to room-temperature robes, blankets, socks, and pajamas. But we’ve finally got our first real peek into the Valentino-pink Barbie verse, and Gerwig’s world of plastic and vanity is nothing if not high-brow camp. In a subversive wink at film critics chomping at the bit to pan the new Barbie film, Gerwig and Warner Bros.

Thankfully, we didn't get a Barbie movie until the super-talented Greta Gerwig came along. It's shocking that we didn't get an officially licensed Barbie movie decades ago. Then she falls in love with a human, coincidentally named Ken, and learns what it means to be alive before she tearfully becomes a toy again.
Sorry, there's absolutely no way your secret Santa is going to get you a better gift than the one Greta Gerwig and Warner Bros. got us this holiday season: ...
Gosling’s Ken follows her, as does Will Ferrell as the Mattel CEO, trying to get Barbie back where she belongs. We know it follows Barbie as she leaves her world to enter into ours and experience life as a real woman. Now, we finally have (a bit of) an answer. We see a glimpse of what could only be Barbie World, as well as Ryan Gosling giving his best blue steel as Ken. Issa Rae fist pumps into the air, and Simu Liu dances in a void. A voiceover comes in, saying, “Since the beginning of time, since the first little girl ever existed, there have been...dolls.” We see shots of modernly dressed girls playing with baby dolls as Richard Strauss’ “Sunrise,” used in 2001: A Space Odyssey, begins playing.
