Cambodia beats Azkals in AFF Cup opener (Manila Bulletin)

The Philippine Azkals absorbed a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Cambodia to start their campaign in the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Mitsubishi Electric Cup ...

Unbothered by the deficit, the young Filipino crew kept the pressure on the Cambodians before a rebound from Daniels off a long-range shot from Arnel Amita found the back of the net for the Azkals’ first point at the 41st minute. The Filipinos’ defense looked a step slower to the Cambodians’ crispier execution and relentless attacks which immediately bore fruit with two goals against Philippines’ goalkeeper Kevin Hansen –the first coming from Reun Bunheing at the 16th minute before Orn Chanpolin rifled in another from outside the penalty box at the 22nd minute to take a 2-0 lead. Kenshiro Daniels scored two goals in an effort to help the Filipinos save some blushes and recover from a sluggish start that saw them trail 2-0 but were not enough after they conceded a goal to the Cambodians at the 59th minute which proved to be the dagger against the Azkals.

Cambodia trips Azkals in AFF Championship opener (Rappler)

Newly appointed Philippine Azkals head coach Josep Ferré suffers a 2-3 debut loss to Cambodia at the 2022 AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup.

Stephan Schröck, the Azkals team captain, had a golden chance to equalize the match at the 66th minute, but his left-footed shot was parried out by Soksela for a corner kick. Cambodia had 53.2% of the possession in the first 45 minutes and almost had a chance to add a third goal just before the halftime whistle, but the referee waved off the penalty shout of the Cambodians as he did not think that the tumble of Lim Pisoth inside the box warranted a spot kick. At the 41st minute, Kenshiro Daniels reacted the quickest to get the rebound off an Arnel Amita long-range shot and easily tapped in the ball past Keo Soksela, the Cambodia goalkeeper, to cut the deficit to a single goal, 1-2.
