Top Gunners, Chelsea blues and new bosses – Premier League ... (Limerick Leader)

It has been 39 days since the last action took place in the Premier League ahead of the Qatar World Cup. Ahead of the competition's restart on Boxing Day,.

Julen Lopetegui was appointed Wolves boss just a matter of hours before their home defeat to Brighton on November 5 and also watched the loss to Arsenal a week later from the stands, but officially started his time in charge at Molineux on Tuesday with a Carabao Cup win over League Two Gillingham. Everton manager Lampard is the odds-on favourite to be the next Premier League sacked, and it is not difficult to see why. Arteta, whose starting XI has been the second most consistent in the top flight, has called on his players to seize their chance of a first title since 2004 and their two meetings with Pep Guardiola’s side (in February and April) could be pivotal.

Last year, they failed to add to the tally because they played their game on the 27th. [Aston Villa](https://www.sportskeeda.com/team/aston-villa) have a good record of wins on Boxing Day with 46, but they have found it tough to collect three points in recent years. Every season the top four race becomes a harder one to win, and this season the inclusion of Newcastle United means that there are more participants. Liverpool sit sixth in the table, having played 14 games, and are looking to go again after a poor start to the season. [Manchester City](https://www.sportskeeda.com/team/manchester-city), in recent seasons, have turned their fortunes around on Boxing Day and are one of the top performers. [Pep Guardiola](https://www.sportskeeda.com/football/pep-guardiola) and company as they aim to leapfrog Arsenal in the title race. Frank Lampard has done well to motivate the players, and with it being a home game and right after Christmas, this clash should be an entertaining one. This year Liverpool travel to Unai Emery's Aston Vila on the 26th. In 2021 their Boxing Day game against Burnley was postponed due to Covid cases and was played in April as opposed to Boxing Day. Fans use the day off to go and support their teams and it is part of the festive weekend. Last year they beat Leicester by six goals to three at the Etihad, but this season they don't play until the 28th and won't be able to add to their tally. [Premier League](https://www.sportskeeda.com/go/epl) took a pause last month, a week before the World Cup in Qatar, and is set to return on 26 December.

Premier League predictions: Who will win the title in 2022/23 ... (Radio Times)

RadioTimes.com picks the top contenders for the title, European qualification and relegation as the Premier League returns in 2022/23.

[Best players in the world](https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/sport/football/best-football-players-world/) They sit in 14th ahead of the restart but lost four in a row prior to a victory right before the break. You have to give massive credit to the team for putting up such a valiant fight, but over the course of a 38-game season, they will be found lacking. [Best players of all time](https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/sport/football/best-football-players-all-time/) [subscribe now](http://radiotimes.com/magazine-subscription?utm_term=evergreen-article). Nathan Jones has come in from Luton with a top football league background, which may come in useful given which direction the Saints appear to be marching. It will have afforded him and his patchwork squad time to bond, time to breathe, time to gel. Steve Cooper has been backed by the board and will have enjoyed the respite of the World Cup break. Pep Guardiola's men remain a lethal unit and will remain in this title hunt until the end. United have jettisoned Cristiano Ronaldo and his exit surely strengthens the group as a whole, Erik ten Hag's authority as boss, and Harry Maguire's place as captain. The fact Newcastle sit in third is testament to how disjointed the table looks right now. At the other end of the table, Wolves, Southampton and Nottingham Forest occupy the danger zone but that could all change in the coming weeks.

City's big World Cup headache; glaring Man Utd hole without Ronaldo: EPL State of Play.

It has to be the right player to take us to the next level. In 19th place on the ladder, Jones must find a spark in the second half otherwise the Saints will be marching in to the Championship for the 2023/24 season. That was going from a small fish to a big fish in the same pond, but now, the stakes are even higher with billions of pounds at stake. If Maddison can carry his form through to the second half of the season, the Foxes could be in with a sniff of a Europa Conference League spot. With such an insane workload in the space of a few weeks, Pep Guardiola will need his returning stars to be fresh once the Premier League resumes as they look to resume a title charge. A breakdown of the Serbian sharpshooter’s goals shows that three of his nine have come from headers, another three from the penalty spot and the remaining three from his right boot in open play. With two goals and two assists in his final four games, the Foxes star made sure of his spot on the plane to Qatar with the England squad although he was unlucky not to have seen any playing time. It also means the Ivory Coast international is free to negotiate with clubs in January and sign a pre-contract agreement, meaning he’d spend the rest of the season with Palace before joining his new team upon the expiration of his contract. “I never gave a date. Foley may be tempted to make a big splash in his first window as Bournemouth owner, but with a relatively unproven O’Neil at the helm, how much he spends in relation to the threat of relegation will be one to watch. The American is also the owner of the Vegas Golden Knights in the NHL, so he isn’t exactly a stranger to running a sports team, but the Premier League is a different beast. It’s going to take some time for sure,” Arteta said of Jesus.

The Biggest Premier League Questions After the World Cup Break (Sports Illustrated)

Can league-leading Arsenal pick up where it left off? Will Erling Haaland continue his hot start?

[Liverpool](https://www.si.com/soccer/team/liverpool) and [Chelsea](https://www.si.com/soccer/team/chelsea-1) find themselves on two sides of a glass-half-empty/full scenario. [Christian Pulisic](https://www.si.com/soccer/2022/11/02/christian-pulisic-chelsea-usmnt-world-cup-daily-cover). survived a tough group thanks in part to [Pulisic’s gutsy goal against Iran](https://www.si.com/soccer/2022/11/29/usmnt-christian-pulisic-scores-vs-iran-group-stage-world-cup). [Manchester United](https://www.si.com/soccer/2022/11/27/christian-pulisic-could-move-chelsea-manchester-united-loan-january-report) and Newcastle have been linked with a loan move in January, and it might not be the worst idea. [Arsenal](https://www.si.com/soccer/team/arsenal) fans were all left asking the same fatalistic question: Of all the years to have a six-week break in the middle of the season, why did it have to come with the [Gunners atop the table](https://www.si.com/soccer/2022/11/13/arsenal-premier-league-table-lead-world-cup-break-man-city)? [Saudi takeover](https://www.si.com/soccer/2021/10/07/newcastle-saudi-arabia-takeover-premier-league), Newcastle has invested heavily as it looks to add its name to the ever-growing list of elite European clubs. After winning 12 of their 14 Premier League games to start the season, Arsenal went into the World Cup break with a five-point lead over [Manchester City](https://www.si.com/soccer/team/manchester-city-1) in its most serious title push since the [Invincibles’ legendary 2003-04 triumph](https://www.si.com/soccer/2019/05/15/arsenals-invincibles-why-15-years-later-they-are-still-best-ever-premier-league-side). [incredibly disappointing World Cup with Belgium](https://www.si.com/soccer/2022/12/01/belgium-out-world-cup-golden-generation-lukaku-martinez-de-bruyne), De Bruyne will be glad to be back where he plays his best soccer. But unlike Liverpool, Chelsea is expected to spend during the upcoming transfer window while the feeling surrounding the team is much more positive given that But the winter window is always quieter than the summer one, and it would be a surprise if even two of those breakout stars arrived in January. The playmaker already has nine assists in 14 appearances—thanks especially to Haaland’s finishing—and will be eyeing the 20-assist mark he shares with Thierry Henry after his 2019–20 performance. Rather than list the times he has scored, it would be easier just to name the teams that miraculously kept him off the score sheet (Bournemouth, Liverpool, Brentford).

How will the Premier League's top clubs fare over Christmas and ... (The Independent)

Will reigning champions Man City secure another title and can Newcastle sustain a push for a Champions League place?

New owners or not, he needs a result and the first game back at home to Bournemouth in the Premier League on December 27 is so vital. My view is they’ll still get top four, but that Champions League tie with Real Madrid is so interesting - do they go all-in on European success and potentially rest a few in the odd league game, risking even fourth to do that? LO: It’s still hard to disseminate exactly what the plan is at Chelsea: time will tell but the arrival of recruitment experts from Brighton and RB Leipzig would suggest they aim to bring in rough diamonds rather than established world-class talent. Liverpool probably need an addition centrally, but they also now need to either add an attacking option or get fortunate with the fitness of Salah, Firmino and Nunez. LB: Liverpool will come absolutely flying out of the traps in January with Mo Salah finally having had a break from football for the first time since, I dunno, under-13s level? With Champions League knockout games to come too, they will do very well to finish in the top four once again. One decent January addition and the return to full fitness of Alexander Isak could be two huge factors. The table is tight enough around them for me to feel that they’ll slip out of the European spots come the end of the season. KJ: The exploits of Harry Kane, Heung-min Son and Hugo Lloris in Qatar may come back to bite Antonio Conte’s Spurs, who have been inconsistent up to this point anyway. Having said that, with a rampaging Erling Haaland, City will ultimately just pip them to the title in a classic race. As for Tottenham, they’ve been far too inconsistent, and I think that will see them drift from fourth into the Europa League places. It would be great to see City pushed all the way, but Gabriel Jesus’s injury feels costly for such a thin squad.
