De Zerbi's men were much too good for Southampton as they went in at half-time with a commanding lead, while March scored with a stunning strike in the second. It's very well weighted and while Bazunu gets a slight touch, that diverts the ball onto Perraud, who knocks the ball into his own net. While Nathan Jones' men are in the relegation zone, they are coming into this contest off the back of a 2-1 win over Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup whereas the Sussex outfit lost on a penalty shootout to Charlton Athletic in the same competition last week.

As a result, Dunk had to go to Veltman who had more time and was more available on the ball. Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi said that it had been the best performance since his appointment three months ago and he agreed that European football was a realistic target. There was then a slight wobble when Samuel Edozie won a penalty from Lewis Dunk and James Ward-Prowse headed in the rebound following Robert Sanchez’s save but it proved no more than a consolation for Southampton. The final 3-1 scoreline was, if anything, generous to a Southampton side who were 3-0 down within 56 minutes and are now rock bottom of the Premier League. The boos that rang out on the final whistle told their own story about a performance short not just of quality but the pressing and collective purpose that had been Southampton’s hallmark during a continuous decade in the Premier League. Jones cannot be blamed for the wider malaise but, after six weeks with a squad that was relatively untouched by the World Cup, no new surge of energy or confidence was evident here. Although Jones stressed that “hard work” would now be the key, the January transfer window will clearly also be critical.
