The news of Ronaldo's signing Friday follows months of rumors and speculation as to whether he would join a Saudi team offering a lucrative contract.

He scored a whopping 450 goals for Spanish team Real Madrid, 145 goals in 346 games for Manchester United, 118 for the Portuguese national team, and 101 for Italian club Juventus. The Portuguese team was later knocked out of the tournament by Morocco. In addition to Ronaldo's soccer achievements is his immense social media following — something likely of high value to the Saudi kingdom as it seeks to draw more positive attention to the country. He is one of the highest-paid athletes in history. Saudi Arabia has made a bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup. In the summer, Ronaldo turned down an offer from a different Saudi club, Al Hilal, which would have given him a roughly $370 million contract over a number of years.

Ronaldo joins Al-Nassr: A look at the transfer saga (The Indian Express)

The Saudi club has pulled of a transfer coup, instantly raising its own profile and the profile of the Saudi Pro League.

But beyond the individual capacity of Al-Nassr to sign Ronaldo are the larger workings of the Saudi league and Saudi politics in general. This was a time when Chinese football was being heavily boosted by the state, with owners getting all sorts of benefits and incentives to help clubs compete with the best in Asia and eventually, Europe. While Ronaldo will be the biggest star in this category, he is not the first to be signed on a massive deal for purposes that went beyond the field. A player like that puts any club he joins in the radar of fans, bringing in interest and revenue from all kinds of places. Cristiano Ronaldo will be the highest profile signing in the club’s history and arguably the biggest player to ever play professional football in Asia. In 2020, he was appointed “Adviser to His Excellency Chairman of Entertainment Authority” according to his This is a signing that will not only inspire our club to achieve even greater success but inspire our league, our nation and future generations, boys and girls to be the best version of themselves. There are only a handful of top clubs in the world with the resources to sign Cristiano Ronaldo. However, the Saudi club was the first to take this name. For instance, against Tottenham, he refused to be substituted in during the fag end of a game where United was already cruising to a victory. In the new season, the goals dried up and all of a sudden, Ronaldo looked like a shell of his former self. And in the few opportunities that Ronaldo did get, he played some of the worst football in his career.

What Cristiano Ronaldo can expect in Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr (ESPN)

Ronaldo wanted to compete in the Champions League and go up against the legends of the game. Now, he's preparing for the Saudi Pro League instead.

Al-Nassr described the Ronaldo signing as "history in the making" when they announced the deal on Friday, adding that it would "inspire our nation and future generations of boys and girls to be the best version of themselves." I'm sure that having Cristiano Ronaldo in the league will only make everything bigger and put Saudi Arabian football firmly on the map." Ronaldo can expect all of the perks reserved for the best players in Saudi Arabia. A luxury villa in the prestigious Al Muhammadiyah compound, the best schools for his children and a fleet of the best cars. In terms of their favourite players, two stand out as being mentioned more than the others: [Paul Pogba](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/138860/Paul-Pogba) and [Mohamed Salah](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/173896/Mohamed-Salah). For those who expect Ronaldo to be living in a country that does things differently to those in Europe and North America, they will be in for a surprise. As part of their contracts with the Pro League teams, the top players earn salaries comparable to those in the major European leagues. "They also endorse Pepsi, which is a big thing in Saudi because Pepsi dominates the market ahead of Coca-Cola. [Arsenal](/soccer/team?id=359) goalkeeper [David Ospina](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/121842/David-Ospina), [Cameroon](/soccer/team?id=656) forward [Vincent Aboubakar](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/147324/Vincent-Aboubakar) and Talisca, the Brazilian striker who leads the scoring charts in the Saudi Pro League with nine goals so far this season. [Odion Ighalo](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/129195/Odion-Ighalo), the former Manchester United forward, is one of three players in second place with six goals. It is aimed at the rich (and famous) with Dior, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany, Victoria's Secret all having stores in the four-floor shopping centre. Instead, the floodlights will fade on his glittering career at Mrsool Park, Al-Nassr's compact stadium in the grounds of King Saud University, a mile up the road from Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Investment building.
