The hearing of the appeal will likely be in 2023. Hisyam tried and failed to get an adjournment for the hearing of the main appeal (it had been delayed at Shafee’s behest previously) but the application was rejected by the apex court. His unorthodox legal antics over the few days raised many an eyebrow, especially in legal circles. While Shafee was granted a brief reprieve from his legal battles, the Attorney-General’s Chambers has filed an appeal against the High Court decision. Judge Datuk Muhammad Jamil Hussin said the prosecution had failed to prove a prima facie case against Shafee on all four charges. Shafee is also acting as Najib’s lead counsel in the 1MDB-Tanore and 1MDB audit tampering trials. Shafee was also in court for personal matters. Starting his career as a lawyer, he was fast-tracked to Court of Appeal judge in 1994. There, he sat until he was finally elevated to the Federal Court by then chief justice Tun Zaki Azmi in 2009 some 15 years later. The lack of success has not discouraged the couple as some applications are still pending appeal. In October, he was acquitted by the High Court of all four charges of money laundering involving RM9.5 million that he had received from Najib and for making false declarations to the Inland Revenue Board. A year later, he retired from the bench, having reached the mandatory retirement age.
