Ke Huy Quan Wins Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes 2023 (Vanity Fair)

For so many years, I was afraid I had nothing more to offer,” the 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' star said in his emotional acceptance speech.

I don’t know how to explain it, but it was a feeling that I haven’t had for decades. “I was raised to never forget where I came from and to always remember who gave me my first opportunity,” he said. It was the release of 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians—with his future costar Yeoh—that gave Quan renewed hope for opportunities in Hollywood, and he returned to acting when directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert cast him in Everything Everywhere All at Once. In Everything Everywhere All at Once, Quan plays Waymond Wang, the sweet husband of Evelyn Wang (Michelle Yeoh) who is saddened to be pursuing a divorce after he feels his marriage has run cold. As a child in the ’80s, Quan starred in The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, but later was unable to find work as an Asian actor in Hollywood, instead building up a career behind the scenes as a stunt coordinator and assistant director. Quan’s emotional acceptance speech reflected on the tough journey he’s had from a child star.

Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan set to make SAG Awards history (Goldderby)

The 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' costars would be the first Asian winners in their individual SAG Award categories.

See our [latest prediction champs](https://www.goldderby.com/best-prediction-scores/awards/league-data/). The only SAG Award winner of Asian descent in either of the TV comedy categories is Tony Shalhoub (“Monk,” 2004-2005; “The Marvelous Mrs. The only primarily Asian cast that has won any SAG ensemble award is that of the Korean film “Parasite” in 2020. Three Asian men have previously contended for Best Film Supporting Actor, with Ken Watanabe (“The Last Samurai,” 2004) being the only one to originate from the continent (specifically Japan). Two of the category’s winners – Julie Christie (“Away from Her,” 2008) and Natalie Portman (“Black Swan,” 2011) – were born in Asia but are both of European descent. They and their cast mates also appear to be the ones to beat in this year’s ensemble race, while the film could also reasonably net dual supporting female bids for Stephanie Hsu (who is also of Chinese descent) and Jamie Lee Curtis.

[Steven Spielberg](https://collider.com/steven-spielberg-movies-improv/), The Goonies tells the story of a group of misfit teenagers living in the seaside town of Astoria, Oregon, known as the ‘Goon Docks.’ The group discovers a treasure map belonging to a seventeenth-century pirate, One-Eyed Willy, which they hope to use to save their homes from foreclosure. “For the last thirty-something years we tried to do Goonies 2,” Quan said, before admitting a sequel would not prove as successful as The Goonies. “We had numerous scripts, but not one script that felt that it could live up to the original.” Furthermore, the actor admitted the death of the original film’s director, Richard Donner, whom he described as the “captain of [their] ship” meant a sequel would not feel right. Now, he is set to star in the second season of the Disney+ series Loki, and will star in The Electric State alongside Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt after winning his first acting award for Everything Everywhere. Whilst the [Everything Everywhere All at Once](https://collider.com/critics-choice-awards-nominations-2022/) actor could not confirm a second movie would be happening, he spoke about numerous scripts having been written for a possible sequel.
