The Wandering Earth II (2023) Review - Voices From The Balcony (Voices From The Balcony)

Coming in at 3 hours long, The Wandering Earth II mixes impressive action and effects scenes with a less impressive plot and characters,

While the fate of some of the characters may be in doubt, we know that the obstacles will be dealt with and the project will be successful. From a narrative point though, the biggest problem with The Wandering Earth II is the most obvious one, we know how it all ends. There’s drama over who will get a place in the underground cities and who will be left on the surface to die, romance, terminal illness and a few other complications. The only surprises are that rather than a sequel it’s a prequel, telling the story of the Moving Mountain Project that turned Earth into a giant spaceship and that it manages to be even longer than the original, coming in at just under three hours. So many stories and plotlines get tossed at the viewer it’s hard to keep track of them all or to know which ones are important and which are merely distractions. But support for the project is far from universal and an alternative movement, The Digital Life Project has arisen.

It’s hard to say how much of a true cinematic achievement “The Wandering Earth” was when it gave China its Gwo’s follow-up takes place years before the events of the first film and focuses on the United Earth Government’s initial efforts to push Earth out of our solar system, a move intended to avoid planetary disaster. Boasting a bigger budget and greater expectations — the Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau has been added to the cast — “Wandering Earth II” is, narratively, a prequel.

The Earth is so beautiful and alive. Their collective efforts are remembered in the movie as thousands of volunteers just like them scramble to the frontline to maintain the order and rescue the people when the lunar crisis approaches. Ever since the outbreak of pandemic in early 2020, thousands of medical workers were deployed to combat the deadly virus without even sufficient personal protection equipment, as were volunteers and community workers. A crisis is in the air: The sun has become unstable and within 100 years, it will expand to consume the Earth. It was nearly 11 pm when I walked out the cinema while many were still waiting outside for mid-night screenings. Remember the day that people’s courage transcends the history.”

Sci-fi Hit The Wandering Earth II Goes Deeper And Scarier - Lee Daily (The Lee Daily Register)

The director Frant Gwo flew around the world to create the effect of the kind of high-budget, global blockbuster typically associated with Hollywood movies.

This prequel set decades before Earth is launched out of orbit by hundreds of fusion-powered engines shares the original’s chaotic maximalism. The Wandering Earth II has a tonne of movies, and plenty of catastrophes, countdowns and chyrons huge go around. Despite being so lengthy and featuring a number of memorable scenes and likable protagonists, the film ultimately lacks a certain human touch. Audiences already know Earth will be fine, therefore Wandering Earth II becomes a torture mechanism for its new cast members: The Earth will keep on turning, but in the meantime, these unfortunate schmucks can still be tortured. Possibly the strategy is obsolete at this point. A government official regrets that “the world isn’t on the side of reality”. Also, one of the computers shares this opinion. When dangerous solar activity increases, an additional character must deal with the impending death of his wife, as the number of cancer cases rises. The Wandering Earth, one of China’s biggest-ever movie office hits, is a science fiction disaster adventure set in the future. The expansive and at times baffling world-building in Wandering Earth, which was inspired by a short story by Cixin Liu, author of The Three-Body Problem, left a lot of potential for a sequel. (In the United States, it opened in a select number of theatres before making its streaming debut on Netflix.) This strategy is based on artificial intelligence and is being marketed as a last-ditch effort to prevent humanity’s extinction.
